Janet #1 with 178,000 units sold
It was an intense race for #1 between Janet Jackson and Erykah Badu. But Janet’s Discipline was the clear victor with an unofficial 178,010 units sold in its first week to Amerykah’s 122,708.

Poor Janet i know she thought she would sell more with all the promo she got.

Thats still good, I’m very happy for my home-town girl Erykah, her cd is nice I love it, its pure and its definitely E. Badu!!!

Congrats to Janet. Those aren’t big numbers for the 1st week, but I’m sure she’ll be selling a lot more in the weeks/months to come.
Ya know I do have to say I’m proud of Erykah. She came in close but their market is VERY different. Janet sold to the ‘masses’ of color while I don’t believe the color masses purchased Erykah’s…..that to me is a huge success.
They are on 2 different levels - I listen to Janet and I feel like I need to put on tennis shoes and move real fast doing something. I listen to Erykah and I just chill.
Indeed they are on two different levels. I’m still trying to figure out Erykah’s new album. Might have to smoke some trees to do it.
Congrats to them both and may they continue to sell. I think the industry is totally changing and those big 400,000/500,000 in a week’s time sales will become more and more obscure.
Thrown, your crazy I think Erykah gives off that vibe of feeling laid back & mellow!! I love her cd & she had a show on VH1soul called soulstage girlfriend was rockin!! Im glad she toned down the wardrobe a lil bit!! also congrats to Janet I figured she would do well!! I wonder why rappers sell more than r&b singers cause 178 doesn’t seem to be that much if you compare the two!!
nothing is “Official” until the SOUNDSCAN numbers come out tomorrow. Hit is notorious for putting out numbers either higher or lower than the real total
For whoever clowing her numbers, i think this is pretty good for only doing aggressive marketing in the last week prior to the cd dropping. I don’t know why they did it this way, but hey, i think selling almost 200,000 for one week of marketing, without heavy airplay is damn good.
And please believe this **** about to kill when she goes on tour. Her tour sales are going to be off the charts and then she’ll also pick up steam with the cd as well. By this years end, she will top the amount of money made by any female entertainer, who want’s to bet otherwise. There is a line forming now for her tickets and she don’t go on tour until July.
congrats to them both . i was really hoping that janet would have sold more, but she still did good. maybe with the release of singles and the prospect of a tour the album with continue to sell. i heard her tours are fabulous and i hope she makes a stop in h-town .
J can look very pretty or extremely outdated and draggish. I think she needs to change her stylist and really kick it up a notch and be fierce at her age and not keep repeating from when she was fierce years ago.
I heard it had a pop-electronica club sound and gay white men love that so she was gonna win anyway if that is the case.
I haven’t heard the Janet yet. I’ll wait for her to play out on the radio. Although I don’t like the Erykah(as some of you may know) I am prounf of both of them. Each of them are number one because each of them have a different target audience. There is no comparsion between them.
@hellava10 rap/hip-hop is bought mainly by white teenagers and young adults. I would like to believe that as more R&B artist follow their heart, such as Erykah did, and get back to real music that the numbers will improve greatly.
I know there are a lot of people here who doesn’t like Steve Harvey but as he states many times the old skool music is serious, you can argue, make up, make love and babies with those songs. Some of the music these days are all about getting that porn scene quickie. Not that there’s anything wrong with that (sometimes we just need something to get us through the workday in the mornings).

Congrats Janet!! Allthough I was expecting WAY more fron her since she is a legend and all.
I’m wondering if Janet’s last two albums sucked that bad, or is MTV that important to an artist’s career?
