R.I.P. Sean Levert

Sad news to report in the music world: Sean Levert, the younger brother of R&B singer Gerald Levert and son of Eddie Levert of the O’Jays, has died. Levert was rushed to a hospital after collapsing at the Cyahoga County Jail where he was being held for non-payment of child support.
- Levert, 39, died at 11:57 p.m. at Lutheran Hospital after being transported to the facility from the Cuyahoga County Jail. Sean Levert had gone to the jail infirmary complaining he was sick.
It was in November that Sean Levert started singing again. He talked with NewsChannel5 about finishing a project — bringing the group back together — that his brother started.Gerald Levert died Nov. 10, 2006. He was found dead in his bed at his Newbury home. (Source)
I have to say this about a justice system that locks up too many good black men: They need to find another way to deal with the child support problem because locking up brothers is not the answer. We have too many black men in jail who are put there by vindictive women who don’t get it that a man doesn’t want her any more.
Yes, you have some shiftless, no good men out there. But most brothers would support their kids if it weren’t for the baby mama wylin’ out on them. Any woman who has dealt with her man’s ex-baby mama knows what I’m talking about. How does a man pay child support if he’s in jail? How does locking him up solve the problem?

I could not believe it when I heard this. I was listening to The Tom Joyner Morning show and a caller called in to send Eddie Levert & Family their condolences. I was like man they repeating a show from almost 2 years ago. Then I get to work and pop on the internet and see it was Sean. I just can’t believe this.

My goodness, that poor family. While the reasons behind him not paying are not known, I can imagine the stress of ending up where he did had to play a part in his getting sick. His children where not babies, its all so sad. Condolences to his children and to his entire family.

DAMN! I really didnt wanna go there with this topic! I really wanted something and expected something different! But I have to ask: As women when do we learn?
When do we learn to see the RED FLAG of a no good ass nigga on our hands? When will we learn that its not our fault for what HE did? When will we learn that you can take a n**** out the hood…but you cant take the hood outta him? HUH? When will to learn that too many **** ups means just that: HES A **** UP? When will we learn to stop forgiving and let his ass GO?
Being 25 I’ve had all different types of men in my life? And I just experienced one of the worst yet to come! This isnt a “diss blog” this is a “foreal ****” blog! After I left my ex on the show…I was single for almost a year and a half…loving life…”experimenting” lol and just enjoying being me ya know! No problems…well “men” problems! Anyway I’m not here to explain in detail all of my life…but moreso a warning to my young women fans out there who email me for advice all day everday that: Even though your ready to settle down….you’ve probably even “settled for less” with who your dating and still ready to be committed to only them: you cook…clean…keep your hygiene and body tight…watch his kids…cook for his kids…suckin’ and fu**** him right…working…going to school! PLEASE thats never enough for a man: So I say in 5 simple words:
IT AINT YOU ****…ITS HIM!
My number one rule has always been: I DONT DATE MEN WITH CHILDREN! Why you ask: cause regardless of what they tell you of how much they hate her…it was never serious just a fling….shes ugly and fat now….shes got kids by another man i would never want her back after that….HE’S MOTHA****IN’ LYING! Every man is basically like a woman…he wants that family value….that security…but he wants you to deal with his **** at the same time also! Specially the broke ones…there sooooo desperate! You cant save a man that dont wanna be saved!
To the ladies who meet a man with kids and you dont have any: RUN AS FAR AWAY FROM HIM AS POSSIBLE! Its a no win situation…either hes got baby momma drama…or hes secretly asking for her back or tryin to hit..cause shes more than likely that desperate to do whatever it takes to “be a family”! So shes gonna keep it hush hush..or she can be one of the loud ghetto ones and tell it all! Now thats not dissn all babymommas…all three of my sisters are baby mommas…and they are strong women and dont care for the daddy…they take care of theres…but its the daddies who secretly beg for them back…or would have a new girl..and still try to sneak around with the mother!

I have to say, though, that blaming the mother because the daddy won’t support his child makes no sense. The child is still the man’s responsibility - regardless of his relationship with the child’s mother.

I don’t know all of the details surrounding the child support issue, but how did he get $80.000 in the hole to began with?…It seems like he could have worked something out before it came to him having to go to jail…And it’s not the mother’s fault if he owed that money to his kids, but like I said I don’t know all of the details surrounding his relationship with this woman or what kind of person she is.

I am so saddened to hear about this. It is in our times of grief that we want to blame somebody for our loss. We cannot blame whoever this lady is about him not doing what he’s suppose to do. Mothers don’t get the opportunity to just walk away for the most part.
Take care of your children!! The law shouldn’t have to force you to do that!!!
My love and sympathy to the family!!! I’m sure that the mother of his children are grieving as well and that’s the last thing she and their children need to think is that she caused his death. That’s not true.

Well we really don’t know the true about the stories we are reading, but one thing we do know is that a family has lost another love one. My prayers are with his mother as well as the whole family, it is extremely hard for a mother to lose her child, in this case two so close together.

RIP Sean Levert!! Condolences to the Levert family! As for the child support issue and jail. Some people deserve to be in jail. I mean men and women who refuse to work or even refuse to be apart of their Child or childrens lives. I have a cousin (male) that has two baby mommas and 5 kids!!! He refuses to work and lives in his momma’s basement with his 2nd baby momma, they are averaging having a child every two years!!! So people deserve to go to jail, they arent doing nothing else but being a burdon on everyone else!!! Pluse his momma is on dialysis for kidney disease so she tolerates him because she has her own issues to deal with…as I said SOME people deserve jail!!!

Stop blaming single-moms for everything; any mother who takes care of her child all by herself is taking full responsibility for having unprotected sex-what about these men? They deposit babies and walk away in the same way a dog pisses on a tree and walks away without a care in the world.
It is what it is-there are men out here who don’t give a damn about their kids and if they’ve moved on with a new woman the child is viewed as a casualty “too bad, your momma no longer serves a purpose to me, so you (the child) has to suffer the consequences”
The same women who complain about the system and unfair treatment of the baby daddy’s are probably the same ones who would disagree with a woman refusing to allow a man to see his child-right? Then why do women condone and support the men who have the opportunity to have a relationship with their child who don’t do so simply because they don’t want to.
Stop being a sexist-it aint right for any parent to abandon their child and not financially support them. This sh$t has become all too common, especially when you are trying to justify it by blaming the only one who IS taking care of the child-if you want a full-time nanny it costs money dammit!

I had to get in on this discussion….(even though I agree, we could spend a whole day talking about child support, so we could definitely use a separate post on that)
First of all, I know the Levert family must be hurting now with their second loss. Condolences to them.
OK….now…let me add in my two cents on the whole child support/baby mama situation…
First of all, let me just say that I do have a child, and if you’re the type of person that doesn’t date someone because they have a child, then that is certainly your right, although I don’t agree with that point of view.
In my personal experience, there WAS drama, for a while. Not necessarily because of a new girlfriend or boyfriend, but there just was negative tension between us. And then, yes, the child support setup as well. Hoping to avoid continual drama over the years, I did two things. #1 - I GOT over her (and she got over me). It did take a few years for us to be completely over each other, and it was painful, but it did happen. #2 - We put a child support order into effect as well, because even though I was sending checks (that I kept for my own records), there were still arguments over the money. Once those two things got settled, it was easier to move forward. She wasn’t waiting on me to send any money, and since the courts had decided everything, there was nothing she could argue about, so I didn’t have to hear any drama from her.
As far as my own feelings, I don’t ask or care about what men she’s seeing, and I don’t ask or care about how the money I send her is spent. I think that’s something the fellas could learn from. They have issues getting over the woman, and they still want to have control over what she does….that is just plain wrong. Now that I’m sitting here thinking about it, having a child with someone and then separating can be just as damaging to everyone involved as a divorce.
I think some women have issues (including BIG self-esteem issues) as well when things don’t work out. A few of them were looking to build a life with that man, and when things don’t work out, it’s devastating. Then she spends (in my opinion, WAY TOO MUCH of) her time bitter and angry when she could be MOVING ON with life. They try and get back at the father by always putting him in a negative light in the child’s eyes, or refuse to let the father see the child. Unless the father is a danger to the child, a woman cannot bar a man from seeing that child. If the woman feels like it’s an issue, she can always file for supervised visitation.
And in the end - (like Judge Judy often says) - there are a great number of people who just aren’t intelligent or mature enough to have children in the first place!!

I’m gonna have to come to your defense on this one. Every baby mama situation is different but GOING TO JAIL IS NOT THE ANSWER. So now not only is dude not paying his child support but now my tax dollars are going toward him being locked up. Both parents fail to realize is that the one that gets hurt the most is the child. Both Men and Women need to take responsibility for birth control. People now a days jump into bed first then get to know a person. I gaurantee you if they got to know the person first they wouldn’t end up sleeping with them and then there wouldn’t be drama like it is today.
My condolences go out to the family. Given his weight, history of family heart problems and the added stress just put him over the edge. Now let’s see how the government will collect the child support… New drama unfolding; there is going to be a fight over his Will and estate if he has it.

Men should pay the child support that they are required to pay by law and they won’t find themselves in jail. Just because a woman is in need of child support from their child’s father does not make them vindictive nor does it mean that they don’t get the point that the man doesn’t want them. They just want them to take care of their responsibilities!! Simple as that. It took the two of them to bring the child on this earth. TAKE CARE OF YOUR SH*T. SIMPLE.

When a man doesnt support HIS child your tax dollars then go towards supporting that child via WIC, medicaid, food stamps, subsidized child care, subsidized housing, summer programs boys and girls clubs, free school lunches…i could go on. I have the deepest sympathy for the family of Sean Levert; it’s tragic that this happened. Lord Knows I would never wish such a thing on anyone.
But what does his passing have to do with the justice system changing the way that they deal with this child support problem?
Number one: Male or Female; both should have reprecussions for not paying child support. Jail is just fine by me.
I feel like it gives them a Huge Ass incentive to get it paid next time.
Number two: Obviously you were never a single mom caring for a child with no child support; nor do you care for anyone who is. You’d know why then.

For all of those people who say a man who doesn’t pay child support should be in jail, why should my tax dollars go towards locking up your man AND putting money in your bank account (welfare) because you have poor taste in men?
Garnish their pay, deny these men social assistance so they HAVE to work, hell garnish the wages of their live in girlfriend or their mother, if that’s who is supporting them. But any solution that involves me footing the bill anymore than that, I cannot support.
By the way, do you think Laverts ex-wife was smiling when he went off to jail? How much child support will she be collecting now. Better yet, what the hell does she tell her kids.
Did it ever occur to any of us that he could not afford the child support, I for one am thinking maybe that is the reason why he ended up in jail, maybe someone should prove me wrong.
Deadbeat dads should pay child support and if jail is what happens when they don’t then so be it. ANY parent, father or mother should go to jail if they don’t take care of their children.
That someone is not getting the royalties they use to is not an acceptable reason.

okay here you go, if a parent cant afford the dollar amt payment set by the court they can petition the court to assess their financial situration and reset that amt. Jail is usually the last resort.

u r right, my tax dollars are going to the women being on welfare but they have their FREEDOM! I’d be happy to pay to keep a murderer/rapist etc. in jail but not a man who didn’t pay his child support or a person who didn’t pay their parking tickets.
I know someone who made a mistake and he slept with the wrong woman and before he let her continue using his child against him he was the one who started the child support process and have visitations. I don’t know about other places but in NJ the court does not look at what the man is earning, they look at the cost of living for the child. He could no longer afford to live on his own and had to move back home with his Mom in order to pay child support. Now if the two were together as a couple he would not be spending that much on his child and since the chick isn’t working he has to dish out more money.
I’m all for men needing to step up and take care of their responsibilities but the court justice system needs to come up with better ideas of making them pay instead of putting them in jail.

Its hard for a child/kid to loose their parent but when a parent looses a child it is very tragic because as a parent myself I would break down if I lost one of my kids let alone two in less than 2 years apart. I couldn’t agree with you more on your statement about the child support. Jail and revoking licenses is not the way to address those issues. That is completely hindering them from paying. And I also agree about the triflin women that think they should have to work and live off of the support that is suppose to be for their children.
I know plently of woman with kids that spend the entire check on themselves the children are lucky to see a few dollars of it. A celebrity rapper I know has a baby with a loser I know and the whole check goes to her for LV bags and items had he not been the position he is wouldn’t ever warranted her to even care about stuff like that. and you can trust in believe her son get a few things here and there. I hate it I am a struggling single mother with 2 kids and both my kids fathers are deadbeats I work 2 jobs to support my children. All I need is a little help with school clothes, lunch, school trips, etc…I can keep my own self fly I don’t need my kids money to do that.
It’s a damn shame say what you want about 50 cent but that dude said enough was enough he didn’t let Shaniqua pimp him no more we took his self to court and now she went from 50k to 6,700 a month and hell that is more than enough hell I never heard mention she had a job either.
And they wonder why these men act like they do. It’s crazy.
Asaide from me venting on that I want to say I feel so sad for the Levert family once again I know Eddie never thought he would live his children…..GOD BLESS the entire family.
