With 62% of the building sales chart already in, Janet Jackson and Erykah Badu are in a dead heat for the #1 spot. Janet's 10th studio album Discipline currently sits at #1 with 110,000 units sold. While Erykah's Amerykah is close behind with 88,000 units sold.

Anyone who follows these charts knows that the holder of second place can easily blow by number 1 at the last minute. This race will be interesting to watch as it comes down to the wire!

Yeah Janet on top with a few more units but the sad part is that Erykah isnt promting her album. She just dropped the album with little promotion while Janet on the other hand is getting all kinds of promo and is all over MTV like the songs sound good. BIG UPS TO BADU!!! thats says a lot when you dont have to be on Larry King, MTV, TRL, 106 & Park, Oprah and everything else just to promote your album and you still doing well........

That's it? I thought both would hit sales of at least 150k. What is going on with record sales? I agree, Erykah's sales are impressive for someone with very little marketing this go round. Still expected more from J.

On Larry King she said she had nothing to prove, perhaps that is part of the problem? When she enjoyed more selling success, her goal was to prove whatever she felt she needed to prove. Now, maybe, these are just "fun" albums? I am confused.

Erykah has been promoting her ass off...she has done three magazine interviews, she is touring and she has been on the radio.

I agree it isn't TRL status but she has been getting her album out there.

Both of these ladies are icons...they deserve all that Top Spot!!!

I'm just happy to see two beautiful black woman holding down the top spots. The fact that they represent two different genres of music makes it that much more beautiful.

Like political polls I don't pay too much attention to preliminary reports on record sales. Still those numbers are very low for both artists. I guess we'll find out how accurate they are tomorrow.

Where did you get that chart from? It doesn't look official and that story doesn't reference any website where that came from, plus I swear I read somewhere last week that both of them had more sales than that.

  • Bsoul

I wonder how different Erykah's numbers would be had she the amount of press that JJ had in the past months.

Not bad, Ms. Badu...not bad at all.

  • jcroft

    Ms. Badu's album is FIRE.

However, I can't believe Janet sold so little...what in the world happened? how can artists like Mary and Alicia sell hundreds of thousands the first week out and a veteran artist like Janet sell so little?

I actually liked Janet's new single...

  • nonya

That chart is OFFICIAL its from Hits an industry magazine.

After listening to both albums, I could live a FULL life without either.

They mange to offer what consumers want. I don't care who you are, no change = low sales.

Madonna had one flop. That CD was too much like the last one she'd released. Instead of saying she had nothing to prove, Madonna revamped and did her thing on the next one.
