Did substance abuse contribute to Sean Levert’s death?

According to TMZ.com, sources at the Cuyahoga County Jail where R&B singer Sean Levert was detained for non-payment of child support, say Levert may have been under the influence of an unknown substance and had to be physically restrained by corrections officers.
Levert lost consciousness sometime after being restrained. He was taken to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead. Levert had a history of high blood pressure according to his family.
- Staff at the Cuyahoga County Jail tell us Levert was “out of control” and “hallucinating,” forcing them to place him in a restraining chair, because he was a danger to himself. The jail’s warden Kevin McDonough says Levert was cooperative and “went willingly” when jail staff bound his wrists and shackled his feet.The Cuyahoga County Coroner tells us Levert’s body showed no signs of physical trauma, nor do they suspect foul play. They are currently awaiting toxicology results — those will take four to six weeks to come back. (Source)

I mentioned this in the another post regarding his death. I don’t put drugs past anyone…
My uncle was driving and the cops pulled him over. He had warrants for his arrest and crack in the car. He got scared and swallowed it all. It took effect while he was in jail foaming at the mouth on the floor but they thought it was a joke. When he was checked on again it was all over and he was dead.
My grandmother had to view his body and then she was so shocked and sad that she had a mild heart attack. NO LIE!
Happens to the best of them.
Drugs are a killer.
This is still a sad story nonetheless…drugs or no drugs. I feel so bad for their family.
There’s tooooo much speculation going on about how he died.First I’m hearing about him needing his medication for anxiety.Regardless, RIP to him

I feel so sad for Eddie he lost both of his boys in what 2 years of one another!!! I will pray for the family & you as well Maxdan thats terrible!!
As far as comment #5 I will assume you walk on water & have never done any wrong, yeah I know we all know better than to take drugs but to each his own!! he probably was stressed due to all that money he owed in child support!! I said all that to say you could at least have a heart for the family!!!

To cosign part of what african_dude said, I have to agree that a great deal of Black Americans are badly bred and fed. Take a look at your loved ones (and even those you don’t love); a majority of them are obese or even morbidly obese. Look at your own eating habits and I’m sure that you will agree people need to make lifestyle changes. I am consistently on my loved ones about changing their eating habits. It does no good. When I ask those people in my mother’s generation or my grandparent’s generation why do they eat the foods they eat, they give me the canned response about well that is what the slaves at. Well slavery ended a very long time ago and we no longer have to eat that way. I have a coworker who is at home right now recovering from emergency surgery on her bowel due to some type of obstruction. This surgery itself follows the bariatric surgery she had a few months ago because she claimed she “could not” lose weight on her own. When I would suggest that she stop eating so much red meat, pork, refined sugar, etc. she would remark “I CAN’T LIVE WITHOUT BACON”, or whatever the food at the moment was. Others will never agree it is their dietary choices, yet they’ll find some other condition to blame: thyroid, fibromyalgia, big boned (yeah and you got big meat on them bones too). It is no secret that Sean and Gerald Levert were overweight. All I’m saying is that yes a great deal of Black Americans are badly bred and fed.
Regardless of how his sons died, I couldn’t even imagine what Eddie must be going through. Damn Maxdan sorry to hear that.

This is so sad to hear. My prayers are with the family. My question is what does it gain for a man to go to jail for nonpayment of child support. Sean clearly had talent and connection anyone chould have given him a job and the court order should have been modified to reflect his currents earnings.
My uncle had to go to jail for a few years also for nonpayment of support. My cousin was not only of age with a child of her own when he went but my cousin had passed away a few years prior. Ohio child support laws are tough no fairness invloved. A woman can say she makes $5 per hour and does not have to prove it while the male has to show pay subs of course he can work 40 hours overtime a week and that will never be included in determining the child support amount.
To add, the eatting habits in America is just sad. In West Los Angeles there are more fast food resturants and liquor stores than in other areas. The grocery stores are not stocked with fresh fruit and vegetables. This is genecide like putting one culture of ppl in the same segerated housing unit. There are things that anyone can do to eat healthier. Some ppl will never give up meat. You don’t have to fry it to make it taste fried. Use bisquick or corn flakes to coat it and bake it in the oven, it’s still crispy. Instead of all the salt use Mrs Dash or Lemon Pepper seasoning. Most of the seasoing we use to prepare our food the first two ingredients are salt and sugar. As much as I, like the next person love Ham hocks in my greens it is used for flavor and removed. It is hard to resist it but now I use Smoked Turkey and that we can eat without clogging our hearts. Sorry I ranted on but it is time for a change. I am not going to speculate what killed Sean at such a young age. I just hope that ppl realize that when you carry extra weight especially in the mid area it is not good. RIP Sean and I hope you and your brother Gerald are once again singing together in Heaven.

TMZ didn’t even mention the word drugs in their story. I’m not sure where you got that from Sandra. One of the commenters mentioned it and seemed to have some knowledge of him. Specifically, the commenter said that he had enough money to support his drug habit but couldn’t pay his child support. He/she said that he should have gotten the child support order reduced instead of ignoring it. I was wondering if it was one of his baby mama’s, but quickly dismissed that thought.
Ain’t nobody try to kill that boy. You negroes need to get over yourselves. If he was handcuffed and shackled, it was probably for good measure. He was obviously overweight, and if he did have HBP, that combined with his stress factor is probably what killed him. It is unfortunate that he’s passed away, but the conspiracy theories need to stop. It was just his time, and there was probably nothing that we could do about it. Those that are grounded in their faith know this, those that like to keep **** going, say otherwise.

The courts do that ****. Me and My ex agreed on half but had to have a lawyer. It was owed to me for our kids no arrears to the state, courts or otherwise. If (in some states) 2 ppl agree it still has to be decided by a court if you choose less money. The only reason why I did it was because I felt bad that the times he was not working his child support was still adding up. Week after week. When you are orderd to pay $1200 a month in child support and do not work for a few months here and there it adds up fast. I now tell anyone who is behind because of job situations to go to child support and ask for a modificaion of a court ordered support. The IRS wants their money and does not apoligize when wrong. Child Support does not know if u don’t have a income and will pull the obligation right from the garnishment info that u provided. Sorry again all, just so mad how anyone can easily get caught in the system. I as well as you all know that vacant homes are now in my once owner occupied neighborhood. Some of the empty homes in my neighborhood can’t be sold but are being rented out. Only to be rented out to the wrong ppl. I am not a holier than he/she type of person but I am tired of registered sex offenders and drug dealers living on my block.
This has nothing to do with how he ate LOL.Yeah he had HBP but a lot of people do even if they are not overweight.I heard on the radio that us African Americans may not even exist if it wasn’t for HBP, but now thats a big problem because **** got too complicated with too much salt.Really, people can’t tell people what to eat.That’s their life span, shouldn’t worry about them.They’ll listen when it be something life changing happens.Even though it’s kind of wrong to say, you can’t control people’s lives.It is what it is.Just like you can’t tell people they can’t have sex because they going to have it.It be nice to decrease, but they have to make that mental decision non their own.

And for those that don’t know the prison system in Cleveland and in Ohio in general is VERY GRIMEY ran by the Most RACIST BASTARDS known to man!!! The family need to get a REAL Lawyer and have an independent investigation done that doesn’t involve the State/County BECAUSE I wouldn’t trust anything Those-Racists-MFs have to say about what truly happened to Sean on their premises– R.I.P. While you are right about these stores, you got LA twisted. It’s a shame..
The truth hurts. There are tons and tons of black folks who don’t want to eat right. Oh yeah, it does take getting off your a$$ and exercising too. It makes no sense that my mother just walked around the block for 3 months and ate right and lost 45 lbs. You don’t NEED surgery to make changes, that’s just the easy route. See I believe that before you hit 350 lbs….someone should’ve stopped you at 349 or less…..

Also, I lived in Cali for 19 yrs of my life. It’s pretty true about the liquor stores but we had good enough sense to stay away from the bottle in my house.
