Principal Outs Gay HS Students

A Memphis high school principal is under fire by the ACLU for outing gay students at her school. Attorneys for the American Civil Liberties Union say Daphne Beasley, the principal of Hollis F. Price Middle College High School overstepped her boundaries when she requested a list of gay couples form her teachers so she could “keep an eye on them” and monitor their behavior.

The teachers complied with her request and Beasley then posted the list of names revealing the sexual orientation of the students to other students and teachers.

Beasley is also accused of calling the parents of gay teens to report their alternative lifestyles. (Source)

While I think that principal’s actions are bizarre and she needs to be removed from her position, I was surprised to learn that the Atlanta public school system allows gay clubs in high school.

This same system doesn’t offer home economics, sex education or driver’s ed. What’s wrong with that picture?

As a gay teen in high school, I don’t recall needing to belong to a club. Some teens are confused enough as it is about their sexuality and can be easily influenced by the presence of a gay club in their schools.

It doesn’t surprise me that many of my friends who thought they were gay in high school grew up to marry the opposite sex and start families.

I agree she should be fired especially for exploiting the teens.

this is WRONG she just set these kids up for ridicule and bullying…it’s not up to her to keep an “eye” on these kids..heterosexual teens need to be looked at too..to call the parents was not up to her either..if these kids are blatantly out in school..trust the parents are very much aware..send her behind to the biblebelt since she has such an issue with what is going on with these “youth”..it’s obvious she has a problem with homosexuality and if that is the case, she is in the wrong city to begin with

UMMMMMmmmm Sandra, I could be late or whatever, so don’t take this as disrespect, but does this statement: “As a gay teen in high school, I don’t recall needing to belong to a club.” mean that you are indeed a proud lesbian? Its just a question, i didn’t know before if you had already mentioned it?…

Wow, that’s crazy. She definitely needs to be fired. High School is such an unpleasant experience if you don’t fit in. I’m sure she didn’t make their lives any easier by doing that :(

There was a GLBT club in my high school, along with every color club and also a club for those who hated clubs. Inclusion is important in the teen years imho.
I don’t believe you can be MADE gay by hanging out with gays. Like the common line, some of my best friends are, some of my best friends are and I have never had one grow up and realize they were straight. I do have a friend that is so buried behind the dresses in the closet he married a woman, had a child and is now doing the down low thing. He is so freaked about coming out to his family and in his business life. His good fortune is he married a woman who knows. Whateva….that bitchass principal should be kicked the hell out of education.

This goes to show how messed up the education system is…and further who the heck is she to monitor someone’s sexual preference. To me it seems that she’s causing more drama by publishing the list make the students the target of ridicule.

ok i will say this as nice as i can……… If i had a child that was gay… “I WISH A MOTHERFUKA WOULD CALL MY HOUSE TO TELL ME SOME CRAP LIKE THAT!!!!” who died and made her the Gay Police? That is not he business and she is wayyyyyyyyy out of line for doing that!!! and just like someone said the “str8″ kids need to be watched too.. I mean what is she watching them for and then let along going to give the list where everyone can see……. I would sue the heck out of her.. the school board and the teachers who made that damn list… some nerve!!! By the time i would be finished that schoool would be called PYT ACADEMY!!!

Sandra, while I do agree its a shame those classes are not offered at atlanta schools, clubs are an entirely different program. They are before or after school hours, recieve no federal funding and usually must do fundraisers for thier needs.

And as far as no sexed you can blame all the biblethumpers here for that.

FIRE HER!! She was wrong for calling the parents. It’s bad enough that these kids have to deal with other mean ass teenagers. The parents should find out when the child is comfortable enough to discuss it with them.

IN SAN FRANCISCO THERE ARE A FEW SCHOOLS WITH GAY CLUBS, HELL THERE’S A GAY SCHOOL

This same system doesn’t offer home economics, sex education or driver’s ed. What’s wrong with that picture?

HOME EC, SEX ED, ETC REQUIRE TEACHERS, SUPPLIES AND SO FORTH, A CLUB IS JUST A BUNCH OF KIDS GETTING TOGETHER DISCUSSING COMMON INTERSTS

AND YEAH, THE PRINCIPAL NEEDS TO BE FIRED. Why does she have to keep an eye on the gay students? I wonder if there’s any teenange pregnancy at that school? Does she keep an eye on the hetro couples?

I don’t agree with the principal making a list because what in the world does that have to do with making sure the students are getting an EXCELLENT education? I don’t know why some Americans continue to FOCUS on the wrong things…I’m pretty sure that principal has more IMPORTANT things that need to be dealt with instead of writing up a list for who’s gay and who’s not.

PYT, sometimes i wonder about the stuff u say, but this time u r on the money!! (damn 5 heartbeats lol) it is no business of the principal to call the parents and say “ur child is gay.” i can understand monitoring behavior and making sure that they’re not making out in the halls or screwin in the bathrooms, but they should be monitoring the behavior of all the students… gay and straight.

    AllICanSay says:

I agree with all of you, the principal should be fired. And all the students should be watched, straight, gay and straddling the fence. They are all there to get an education that should be her concern. Young girls are getting pregnant every day. AIDS and other STD’s are running rampant with high school kids period. Now her dummy self have put these kids life at risk. Suicide is high among gay teenagers. As far as the auther saying that most of her friends who thought they were gay in high school ending up marring someone of the opposite sex. I did the opposite and am very happy with my life and partner. We’ve been together for almost 10 yrs!!!!! Anyway, I am sure some of them are unhappy because they were trying to following the rules of ‘society.

    teecee says:

IT WAS WRONG FOR HER TO DO THAT,
BUT BELIEVE ME THEY, THE SCHOOL SYSTEMS AND PRINCIPLES DO THIS ALL THE TIME. THEY GET INFORMATION ON STUDENTS WHO ARE EXTRA SMART, ATHLETES, TROUBLE MAKERS AND THOSE WHO ARE MUSICALLY TALENTED.

I REMEMBER GETTING SELECTED ON AN ART STAFF TO PAINT. I WAS LIKE, HOW DID THEY KNOW ? AND IT WAS IN YOUR SCHOOL RECORD UNDER COMMENTS. NOW I THINK IF THEY WERE IN A GAY CLUB OR THEY WERE GAY COUPLES, THEY WASNT ALL THAT PRIVATE. SOUTHERN WAYS OF THINKING FROM A GENERATION LONG AGO PAST, ARE DIFFERENT FROM THE KIDS OF TODAY AND I KNOW THE PARENTS ALWAYS SAY, I DIDNT KNOW AND NOBODY TOLD ME ABOUT MY CHILDS BEHAVIOR.

  21. 21

i agree with sandra that most kids are just confused anyway. and i also agree that the pricipal is out of line. that was harsh of her. she is judging the kids and saying they will be worse than the others and that is not fair. i can’t say i agree with a gay lifestyle BUT how wrong it is to blast someone as if they themselves are without sin. and she is a female principal at that…i’m rather shocked. and not to mention…high school…HELLO it’s so rough in those jungles man. she told all the kids their business? that’s harsh!

    bklynchick says:

How rude!! That principal had a lot of nerve to call the parents house. Kids in high school already have a hard enough time trying to fit in and wear the flyest clothes.why would you make it even harder for them to fit in? Maybe she needs to come out the closet herself since she is so concerend about it. How u doin????

    darlingmikki84 says:

Its not right at all for them to tell the parents about their kids being gay…thats only up for the kid to do. Shame on them. I think there should be gay clubs/support groups for teens that are in school so that they can get the support they need.

I definately think the principal should be fired she certainly over stepped her boundaries with all of her actions. High school is a very hard time in a kids life. I agree with Sandra that some kids at this age are highly confused and wondering about their sexuality. I think they are also easily influenced. The principals actions may have scared some kids from choosing the lifestyle that is going to be most confortable for them.

That presumptuous principal really should be fired and banned from education as a whole. While I am personally outraged – I must admit I’m mostly laughing at this whole situation. (esp @ PYT’s comments) What’s done is done.

She was wrong as hell and that’s not the behavior a principal should display. I would have to pay her a little visit behind closed doors had that been a child of mine.
