Video: Obama and Michelle’s fist pound leaves the media confused

Remember that phrase “it’s a black thing, you wouldn’t understand?” Well that phrase appropriate for this situation.

The media scrambled to understand what the fist pound between Sen. Barack Obama – who had just clinched the Democratic nomination – and his wife Michelle was about.

Maybe if the mainstream media hired more black people they wouldn’t be scratching their collective heads trying to figure out what a fist pound was.

Here’s a clue CNN and Fox News: It’s like a high five but with a closed hand.

And I’m mad at Patrick Riley for claiming not to know what a fist pound was! I practically raised that boy before he moved to NY from Atlanta in the 90s. Stop fronting, Patrick!

It’s a high five pound which is differant from the handshake substitute pound of hitting one fist on top of the other. Black culture has mannerisms that are differant and even if white folks did work with us they might not get the opportunity to see it as most people wouldn’t do it in the corporate environment. Normally I wouldn’t think it was a big deal, but I have come to accept that the candidates every move will be scrutinized with a microscope. Let’s hope the innocent gesture won’t lose him white votes.

Sandra, thanks for posting this footage. This was one of my favorite moments of the evening, but suprisingly few people caught it. These two are so relatable, unafraid, and fresh. Not surprised at CNN, and definitely not at Fox, for being out of touch. I’m just waiting for the redneck rumor to begin circulating that it symbolized “black power”.
