“Mama I Want To Sing” goes straight to DVD

Just the other day I was having a conversation with a fellow celebrity blogger who asked, “whatever happened to the movie ‘Mama I Want To Sing’”? I joked that the movie went straight to DVD. It looks like I was right after all.

According to Brown Sista, Ciara revealed to Billboard magazine earlier this month that her new movie, Mama I Want To Sing, will not be hitting theater screens later this year, but rather will be going straight to DVD in early 2009.

While Ciara didn’t give a reason for the demise of the film, many believe the producers picked the wrong actress to play the part of Amara, the daughter who wants to sing. I love me some Ciara, but she was all wrong for that part. The part called for a real singer, not an entertainer, which is what CiCi is.

Sometimes producers and casting directors go for star power to draw movie patrons into theaters. But in this case, the film already had star power in Lynn Whitfield. ‘Mama’ required a singer who can blow. Unfortunately, Ciara falls a little bit short of that mark.

Overdubbing tracks with with another singer’s voice while the actress lip syncs is so 1930s. This is exactly what the producers ended up doing with ‘Mama’.

‘Mama’ was more than likely shown at a test screening and the audience hated it. When investors see that a movie does poorly at test screenings, they won’t put up the additional funds to get the movie into theaters.

Call me a hater, but I fully expect the new Notorious B.I.G. docudrama to also go straight to DVD.

    Damn forreal?

Sandra your take on this was well written. I must say I would have to agree. I like Cici as well, I think she is a beautiful girl, but yes, she is more of an entertainer than singer by far.

She looks really nice in this picture as well.

As for Lynn, she is one bad mutha’. I loved her in Eve’s Bayou, oh before that in Women’s of Brewster’s Place. She was also in the straight to DVD movie Confessions of a Call Girl. Lynn is and has always been a favorite actress of mine. Her and Samuel L. “Cussin” Jackson.

oh i knew this was going to happen..either that or TV one would get the rights to it..it never sounded like box office material..good effort though and with the right promotion that can make a pretty penny..they need to debut the BIG story on IFC and see how it does there before doing anything else with it

Yeah you are so RIGHT! I was on Amazon.com about a month ago and I saw that the movie was coming straight to DVD,Now don’t get me wrong I like Ciara I think that she is intelligent & beautiful girl. But, however she cannot “sing” when it comes to this part, they cast the wrong person as Sandra mention earlier maybe they should have cast Tiffany Evans or some up in-coming actress that actually had talent in the **Singing** department. But Im pretty sure her die-hard fans will support DVD release! I will not I rather watch it on watch-movies.com for free Im not about to spend money on that BS!!!!!! ***In Frankie voice*** “HOLLA”!!! ***TYRAMAIL**

I AGREE, I LOVE CIARA TOO BUT SHE IS A BETTER DANCER THAN ANYTHING. THIS ROLE DID NOT FIT HER.

Why do we tear each other down rather than uplift. Everybdy knows brownsista have no love for the GOODIES QUEEN. Sandra , i thought you had love for ATL. This is the reason white media don’t take us serious, too much negativity on black blogget. Ciara is a producer and director it only a matter of time before she funds her on films. FOR THE RECORD DON’T SPECULATE THE REASON,WHAT OUT FACTUAL PROOF. CIARA HAS A BEAUTIFUL VOICE AND YOU COULD HAVE POSTED SEVERAL OF VIDEO DISPLAYING IT. WHY DIDN’T YOU POST HER ON THE COVER OF BILLBOARD, I GUESS THAT WAS TO POSTIVE FOR YOUR READERS. PEACE HINT!!!!! CIARA PEPSI SMASH, CIARA LATE NIGHT CRAIG FERGUSION,CIARA IN SAN JOSE ………

Ciara can’t sing! It’s okay, she’s a SONG STYLIST and the places for that kind of TALENT are many! Just not in this movie, as the straight to DVD release indicates. C’mon now, if Rihanna had played this part there would be no END to the clowing right ab out now, she isn’t that kind of singer! As Cici is not, she mad cool though

‘Mama i want to sing’ Ciara was perfect because she really can’t sing..isn’t it ironic?

    Bird says:

Dang Sandra, I thought you were a Ciara stan. What happened? Anyway you speak the truth for the most part. You are generously referring to Ci Ci as an actor. In reality she is neither an actress nor a singer. She is a dancer. So yeah, the producers and casting director made a mess of this one. As for the Biggie movie, I pray it doesn’t go straight to DVD. I personally feel appearing in this movie at all is a stain on Angela Bassett’s career. Going straight to DVD would push her stock down even further.

Sandra..this is one of those times I have to agree with you..I saw the original stage play when I was younger and it was great…frankly there is no one who is able to portray the lead character the way it was portrayed long ago…

y not Kelly Rowland? Y not Monica? y not a real sanger? i take nothing from Ciara…love you, mean it. She’s just not the right one for that part. Singing? When they offered it she should’ve laughed and asked if she was being Punk’d.

I’m sort of sad to hear that. It’s unfortunate because the play is of the caliber of Color Purple and Dream Girls. I wish the screen writers would have used kid gloves when attempting to turn it into a movie. However, CiCi has a great following in the teen and inbetween teen sect. Though these kids will probally not get a chance to see the stage play, perhaps her fans will show her some love. I would probally purchase it.

i always said she couldn’t sing, but she tried. some songs she sounds alright but others not good. she is a great entertainer. maybe the modeling thing will be good for her, but she needs to stop losing all that weight bad message for the young girls who are her fans.

    *******************************************

I know someone earlier put it in the same category as The Color Purple and Dreamgirls, but the fact is it was more of a chitlin circuit play, ie Tyler Perry play. Otherwise a bigger studio would have picked it up and it wouldn’t have a star with no acting credentials and equal singing ability.

mama I want to sing is a classic, it was on broadway 20 years ago, this is the belated movie version, so there was no choosing or changing the title………..

You’re right it did start small. But it eventually took off and became must see stage play, that is why I am putting it in the same category as DreamGirls and ColorPurple.
