I found this video on AOL Black Voices blog. The video is a deep discussion about the different ways to God according to Oprah Winfrey.

The lively discussion took place on Oprah's "After Oprah" show on the Oxygen channel. I've never seen Oprah's audience go in on her the way this audience does. Her critics claim Oprah is denying Jesus in this video. That's not my interpretation. What I hear is Oprah explaining that there are other religions in the world other than Christianity.

And rightfully so....I don't usually discuss religion and politics. But there is some truth that not everybody believes in Jesus Christ or even that GOD exists. My brother is a Hebrew Israelite and they will not even speak Jesus Christ from their mouths. They refer to him as "JC". Although I have NOT viewed the video, I can say that everybody does not share the same beliefs.

I never claimed to be biblical, just spiritual (who happens to attend church ever so often).

    I agree with that part

  • teecee

well if you have good friends from all over the world who are not christans, you have to believe that to get you thru the night.

  • The Divine Ms. K

Yes, there are other religions in the world besides Christianity - but as a Christian, the only way I know to get to heaven IS through Jesus Christ.

And no - I didn't watch the video either. lol Oprah is always telling folks how to do this, that and the other - she just needs to chill out, for real. What's worse, is how many women just blindly follow her.

Don't get it twisted - she is a good philanthropist and sponsors some good causes. But, when/how/why did she become the know-it-all on how to live your life?

  • http://myspace.com/mullatos SnootyPooty1

@pyt_504 .... I agree with you 100%... The Bible is the most sold book in the world so believe me there is one even in the remotest part of the world. Everyone knows who Jesus is wheteher they believe in him or not...

  • katgirl33

I have to agree with Sandra, and Oprah....I don't think she denied Jesus Christ either.

The audience member kinda snapped when Oprah said there's gotta be more than one way(to interpret the Word).

Oprah gave a great example when she said that if a person never heard of Jesus Christ, but is living life according to the Word, will God not accept that person, because that person didn't know Jesus?

The audience member said God won't come if the Earth doesn't know Jesus....

It's very interesting....but I don't appreciate that the video creator used that scary music to push his point...LOL

I agree with Oprah Americans kill me acting like no other religon exists besides Christianity that's the white arrogance of America, it's just like what they're doing to Barack saying he's a Muslim, what the hell does him being a Muslim has to do with his leadership ability and the fact that he's American..How in the hell can you tell someone that they're wrong if they don't accept your religon or your God.

It didn't come off to me that she was telling folks that they don't have to go thru Jesus to get to Heaven.

I like Oprah, b/c she looks at issues from many points of view, not just hers....

People have their beliefs. They believe what they belive, it's not hurting me.Religion all together is a touchy topic, especiially in America because people will come off judgemental if you not a Christian or whatever. But, gather yourself with individuals who are non-Christian, they human beings still and have a brain. You have to see why they don't believe in what you believe in.Open communication seems to be what most lack. But hey, do you..

you are basically the religion of your parents and close family, people. If you were born in Jordan, surprise surprise, you would probably be a muslim. Born in India? probably a hindu. Some country in Asia, don't be surprised if you are a buddhist. Jersualem, well, golly gee, more than likely you will be Jewish. You get the idea.

So, if you are living you a good, honorable life, following your beliefs, do you honestly believe that hell awaits because you weren't raised in the west to be a Christian? LOL! You guys really do not know the meaning of the true path. Good luck feeling superior than others! God loves that. LOL!

Oprah gave a great example when she said that if a person never heard of Jesus Christ, but is living life according to the Word, will God not accept that person, because that person didn’t know Jesus?

Oprah didn't say that she was living her life according to "the Word". What she said was that if ppl are good and giving blah blah blah surely they will get to heaven. She said that surely there is more than one way to get to heaven than through Jesus Christ. She said that there are many paths one can take to heaven.

Living your life according to the Word entails more than "good works" which is, in essence, what Oprah said is her ticket to heaven. The bible specifically says that you get to heaven NOT BY WORKS, but through Jesus Christ. Now, everyone is free to debate how you get to heaven based on his/her religious beliefs or lack thereof, but the bible's words need not be twisted and turned to fit what YOU want. Either believe in the bible (New Testament) in it's totality or not. You are free to choose - BUT CHOOSE.

Were this video posted 20 years ago -- 10 years ago even, Black folks would have been up in arms at Oprah's downgrade of the importance of Jesus Christ. But now, we are on a whole 'nother level where we don't think we need Jesus. I think we do. There was a time when black mamas didn't kill their kids, didn't leave their kids, didn't pick up crack pipes, didn't have 3 babies for 3 men Ms. Badu, and didn't downplay the importance of prayer and Jesus as a cornerstone in our lives. Now we too good for Jesus? Really? Is that where we are? We've become so enlightened that we've pushed the one saving grace that we had out of our lives...? We need Jesus more than ever now. Oprah will see.

In the video (which SHOULD be viewed before commenting), Oprah says that she was caught up in the church and the pastor's message until he said that God was a jealous God. "Of me? Jealous of me?" the lofty Oprah wondered. HELL NO he is not jealous of YOU, Ms. Winfry, but of anything in your life coming before him. Jesus aint jealous of you; Jesus MADE you...and will break you.

Oprah is free to speak her mind, and live her life according to her own will, but right now it saddens me that countless lost viewers might actually jump on the New Earth bandwagon and follow Oprah straight to....somewhere. She's no member of the clergy and has obviously only skimmed through the bible, so I am insulted that Oprah thinks she can direct ANYone in the area of religion. She can tell folks how to make money, how to live a single life forever, how to avoid marriage or parenting, how to be financially successful, but she has really pissed me off trying to guide ppl to "spiritual enlightenment". She and Eckert Tolle (however you spell that funny looking man's name) changed so many biblical verses that she may as well put out her own version: Oprah's Living Bible.

And I was a fan until New Earth. You couldn't tell me anything negative about Oprah.

  • ThatCarmen

yeah... in today's "religious" society, even Christianity is sometimes tainted.... according to some, God has come back about 25 times in the past 2000 years to inspire change in the bible and now, there are so many different versions as to what role Jesus actually played in our salvation.... heavens, you cant just go to the store and ask for a bible anymore without making sure you are getting the closest one to the real thing. Pray to God for HIS meaning and you will receive it... Follow another man's interpretation and Ill send you a post card to hell. JMO and moving on.

  • VettanTN

The bible says that it is hard for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of heaven. Mark 10:25 This is a perfect example. Oprah was raised in the Church and she knows better. It's hard to follow the bible and God when so many people are following you!!!

Don't get it twisted Oprah, you know the Jesus is The Way, The Truth, and The Life!!! No man/woman comes to the father but by Him!! John 14:6

I applaud this lady for standing up for her beliefs against Oprah. I do not watch her show anymore or support her in anyway.

  • http://myspace.com/mullatos SnootyPooty1

@Smokie .... Girl I had too read that again... You hit the nail on the head with so many of your points!!!!!

I have never been into Oprah and never will be she seeks worship for herself i don’t look too humans for guidance or direction only to Jehovah God and Jesus Christ!!!!! When the time comes we will see who was right and who was wrong and by then it will be too late!!!!

  • purepisces

I think it's silly to believe that Christianity and the Bible is the end all and be all when it comes to religion, especially when other religions obviously exist and are likely followed even more than Christianity. Just as one of the above posters said, depending upon where you were born and what your parents believe, you might have been a Buddist, a Muslim, etc. Just because you are, for example, a practicing Christian, doesn't mean that you are any more "right" than anyone from another faith. I honestly believe they are all "wrong" to a point, because each has been altered in some form or fashion by man through the ages. They are only labels that, in my opinion, often do more to separate people than bring people together, and are often used as an excuse to condemn others or condescend...neither of which were likely intended (or encouraged) by our Creator.

  • kamini

I have to admit, I'm just not sure how I feel regarding organized religion. I grew up Baptist, but with all the conflict (wars) going on because of religion I just don't know how I feel regarding who is right or wrong. I just read this great book which opened up my eyes a little more regarding Muslims. If you guys haven't read I suggest u do. Its called Infidel by Ayaan Hirsi Ali.

Kinda makes you appreciated being born in North America.

  • http://myspace.com/mullatos SnootyPooty1

God is still God and Jesus is still Jesus no matter what people say about how the Bible has been altered.. They have not been and they are the same today as they were yesterday we change but they don’t.

  • ThatCarmen

    kamini, :)
you dont have to beleive in organized religion to be a Christian. For example, I am a full Christian without any man made rules applied. I beleive in the Bible and studying the Bible without fear of being judged by a few good men... without fear of being suspended, or rejected, or kicked out of some organized body of people because I dont follow all of their rules. Its just me, the Bible, and other Christians who enjoy studying the Bible and getting closer to God through Christ. If its painful or judgemental, its probably not the real thing. Christianity gets a bad wrap these days because of the people that try to take it and level themselves out with the abilities of God.... and I can sympathise with those who have been turned away for not following man's rules as I was born Roman Catholic... yikes!

  • Coop

What she is saying is that if a person lives their entire life in the middle of nowhere God wouldn't deny them entry into the Kingdom of Heaven. I would to agree with her and I rarely agree with Harpo. God is much better God then that and would not play those type of petty games that some so called Christian play. There are Christians that don't understand Muslims worship the same God as CHRISTIANS the same as Jews. Yes Allah and God are the same. To the person (DMNB) that mentioned the scriptures do you understand that the Authorized King James Version bible is an English translation of the Christian Bible begun in 1604 and first published in 1611 by the Church of England. The Great Bible was the first "authorized version" issued by the Church of England in the reign of King Henry VIII? Which means it was EDITED.

She may say "Oh Jesus if you would _____ I would ____ … Lord Jesus I need you to X-Y-Z …" but that is becuase that is what many people are taught, but that are not taught that from childhood don't do that.

  • ThatCarmen

Snooty! you are so right! When people can begin praying for God to reveal his teachings through the literature we read and not just take another person's interpretation, .... we will get HIS meaning in whatever book we read. When praying to HIM, we will never be strayed no matter what version of whatever we read. :)

  • purepisces

The slaves...or should we say the Africans or those from other nations that were pressed into slavery...had their own religions until their masters or conquerors showed them "the light." Don't forget.

Kamini I applaud you for seeking your own truth and being more open to possibility. There is no person alive that can prove ANY religion as being 100% correct. All you have is YOUR faith. There are many paths to the Creator. To each his own path.

  • ThatCarmen

COOP! Preach it! The first King James version was edited to allow many wives so that he did not have to change faith to induldge in his way of living with many woman....(it was later edited again to re-word that teaching as people began to question it after his death)

  • Coop

The Great Bible was the first “authorized version” issued by the Church of England in the reign of King Henry VIII? Which means it was EDITED. Which means it was changed by man so the things you are quoting are that of man and that it should be much more important to live a good life that is god like then to follow the edited words of man.

  • ThatCarmen

(oooppss) i only co-sign with coop about the edited stuff... i do beleive (as a christian) that before Christ comes back, HIS gospel will hit all four corners of the earth. :) I love you all ... I love educated black people with a voice...especially since they dont all sound like mine.

Don't forget those same masters would quote the bible to prove that the slave would go to a "slave heaven"

  • starr

i agree with you sandra. people can believe what they want and live accordingly. There are loopholes in all religions. people don't realize that an argument can be diferent, just by them stating, "this is what i believe". Instead people act as if there way is the only way. Thats why i don't talk religion.

  • purepisces

Exactly COOP. Thanks for pointing that out. =)

  • Coop

    That's fine

I believe in God but I also respect other religions. Most people don't understand that there is documented proof of people that were clinically dead and that during that time they saw they higher being that they were raised to believe in. My belief is that it comes down to culture but African American need to remember that we believe what we have been taught from slavery.

  • ThatCarmen

Coop :) exactly why I said to pray to GOD for his meaning and not rely on the words of men. -Whatever you are; be a good one.

Okay, Ill shut it now.. I know Im always jumping on these spiritual topics :) sorry fam.

  • Anna

Oprah has stated that she is a spiritual person not a religious person. For some reason Oprah's clan thinks she is their GOD. I also did enjoy the conversation with Oprah and the two woman in the audience. Oprah could not handle the heat because she thinks all white soccer moms and grandmas love her. On another note, there are too many televangilist(sp)on tv and ppl think that if they watch it that is their church for their Sunday, Wednesday or Saturday. A man is still a man at the end of the day. GOD is GOD all the time. I don't even know what my point is. I am not going to down ones faith in a religion different than mine. We all want to believe that we are going the HEAVEN.

  • Coop

I think that your reading to much into Harpo's actions, some people realize that some times even when you know to the depths of your soul that you are correct that others will not listen when it comes to religion even if you prove them wrong at every turn. And they will simply regurgitate what ever they've been taught.

  • luxe.li.

Imma just say this. Half of ya'll probably don't even know the origins of Christianity, and some of ya'll probably don't want to know the origins of Christianity because ya'll will become confused. If you study Art History, Anthropology, and History in general you'll be presented with somethings that make you question certain things you believe.

In the Middle East there is a Mosque with a golden dome, and the architectural structure and design represents three religions, islam, christianity, and judaism I can't remember the exact name of the mosque, but I'm just saying some people think God and Jesus are interchangeable with the figures in other religions, I'm not saying I believe that I'm not saying you should believe that, but I'm just saying that maybe instead of fighting over it, people should just except the fact that people have different religions....

Also if you realize that most religions are about the same thing, having good morals, doing right by God, living life right....research the Wheel of Dharma and Buddhism...I mean I know this might be scattered cause I really could say so much

what I'm trying to say is why do people get mad, just believe in what you believe and live life. people are so closed minded.

  • luxe.li.

and to COOP I'm glad you typed it and not me cause I would of got mad and started to type scattered things because I would of been typing too fast. People just need to open a book, read something, study history, because history will never lie to you....I believe in God, too many blessings and miracles have happened in my life for me not to believe in it, but I also believe in history, I believe in the hominids coming out of Africa and evolving into man, but I believe that God is the creator of all things, don't get me started I'll take you all the way back to Pre historic times, Paleolithic shit...let me leave.....

We can speak of tolerance all day long. I respect that. I am just saying that if there is someone "in the middle of no where" which 99.9999% of us AINT, then we here aren't doing our job to educate that person.

And God Bless us everyone, but Imma count on Jesus.

  • Coo Coo Bananas

Perhaps Oprah knows there was no Jesus. Perhaps she knows that the story of a virgin giving birth has been around for 3,000 years before Jesus was allegedly born. Perhaps she knows Christianity is based on old Pagan religions.

  • Coop

You statement "but Imma count on Jesus" proves luxe.li. point.
