Monica vs. Brandy: Still Standing or Right Here (Departed)
The full length version of Monica’s single “Still Standing” has gone to radio. So far, SS is in rotation at radio stations in 3 major markets with others being added every hour. Mo kills this song with its emotional lyrics of redemption and determination.
Unfortunately, the simplistic B. Cox track doesn’t hold its own under the weight of Mo’s powerful vocals. The fan response to the track is mixed, with some fans proclaiming they love it while others dismiss it as a buzz single. What do you think?

Brandy is back with a new track titled “Right Here (Departed). The track is produced by Darkchild and B-Rock. I’m not a fan of Dark Child productions. All his music sounds the same.

they are both good stars but Brandy fell off a long time ago and Monica fell off two cd’s ago. I would love to see who comes out on top because they are capable of the unthinkable. just look at their past.

It should come as no surprise who Im riding with…My girl Mo!! Monica takes us to church on this record! As a longtime fan, Im so glad to see her saannggggiiinnggg and a song w/ some SUBSTANCE! Not beat droppin it or comparing her man to a pair Gucci shoes! When I listen to this song it reminds me of the HORRIBLE childhood I had growing up and how I overcame all of that. Im Still Standing…I think Monica did an excellent job w/ this song…It may not be a number one hit (although I think it will be huge), but this song will touch allot of people and thats what really matters. J Records Monica and Melinda better promote the hell out this song though. Monica cant afford them to do a half a$$ job!
Clearly Brandy is going for the pop audiences w/ her song. Im a fan of Bran so naturally, Im going to like whatever she puts out. This song is nice, I think it will grow on me more. I hope her entire album is pop, because I love the R&B Brandy…Almost Doesnt Count, Baby….e.t.c. But it appears Epic records is on they shhh already promoting. Mo betta catch up, dont let Bran outshine u again..
I wish both women well..This is critical for them as artist. They debut 15 years ago…do they still have it? Or have they been replaced…we shall see….

@Dallas214, I know what you mean, Monica sings from the depth of her soul and that why I love her. With Brandy I love her album “Almost Doesnt Count” that album sold millions of copies and made her who she is today with that being said I really hope that she can try to have somewhat of the same concept for current album.

I still jam all of Monica’s and Brandy’s cds in my car and want both ladies to succeed. Let’s not go back to the Boy Is Mine nonsense and have them competing. That was back when they were the top dominant young R&B singers - the landscape is not like that anymore.
I haven’t heard either song down here in Dallas (hello all my 214 peeps!) but I’m sure they’ll get down here eventually.

@mizzdallas: Yes! When Monica says, Im Still Standing, I feel that shhhh… My fav line in the song is when she says, “Dont hate me now, I aint who I used to be no more”..I love that line. Its all about evolving as a person. Also when she says, “Been thru the storm, had dirt on my name, im still holdin on, champion of the game!” We have all had people talk shh about us, but thru it all we still standing.. I dont know, the song just ring true to me..
Monica and Brandy will forever be compared, but the funny thing is, they are two totally diff artist. LOL, but remember back in the day, if u liked one, you did not like other? I used to hate Brandy…simply becuz she stole the spotlight from Monica. But my a$$ used to watch Moesha every week, lol

Tigger played that song like 10 times in a row lol…but I’m more of a lyrics person tho. I felt Monica was singing straight from her heart with this song…something that is very rare nowadays.

Monica sounds great on that single, but I have no desire to download.
I would give Brandy a slight edge because I like the tempo of the song and I’ve liked Brandy since I was a teenager. The song is not a slam dunk by any means, though.

I’m not a Monica fan and this song has not changed that fact. My ears bled until I stopped the song halfway through. But Brandy’s was even worse. I second it
I felt “I’m Still Standing” when I heard it on Monica’s reality special. It’s very rare to hear a song for the first time and really feel it. Jill Scott’s first album did that for me as well as Mary’s 411. Anywho, “Departed” sounds ok but it doesn’t move me like “I’m Still Standing.” Now “Departed” sounds like something that could be a cross over but it definately DOES NOT have the soulful vibe of “Still Standing.” Sorry Brandy.
This post made me play the song again; I’m playing it right now as I write this. This song is a TESTIMONY, HOT AND ON FIRE! AND LUDA; WHAT??? NOPE BRANDY not on this one ma. “I had a lover take his own in front of me, I asked God why is this happening to me but I didn’t fall, I held my own…..YOU CAN’T TAKE THIS JOY I HAVE.” You betta say that shiz Monica!
I love Monica’s voice on Still Standing - and the lyrics because they are so real…many can relate.
I do agree that the beats/music is kinda weak. I almost feel like its not good enough for Monica and that may be why the J Records rep passed on it as her first.
