What’s wrong with being one of the folks?
Hi all. While surfing the Internets, I spotted this cover of Newsweek featuring a smiling Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin.
There’s an uproar brewing over the line “She’s one of the folks - and that’s the problem.” But for the life of me, I can’t figure out why everyone is so upset about that line.
Can someone explain the problem to me and to others who might be equally as confused?

She does not appear to be qualified, anymore that “one of the folks”…when she said “Gosh darnit” at the debate, I knew right there I wasn’t voting for her….
I said it before, and I’ll say it again, she need to go back to Alaska and learn how to be a Governor, or whatever she is…cause she ain’t got it for the VP spot.
Those two just don’t know that they are holding the paintbrushes, for the White House remodeling job….
I’m voting early…..to avoid any BS come November….they start here in Ill Noise this weekend/next monday?

I agree with Kym and Kat - I don’t want someone from down the street to be president or vice-president. Don’t be condescending but I don’t need you to use slang or cutesy phrases when you are addressing me - whose to say you won’t do it in front of digniataries and the like?

I’m actually rather pleased with this line. It IS a problem that she’s just one of the folks. Sure we all have people in our lives who are really down to earth people who truly mean good. They’re our children’s teachers, the local bakery owner, our next door neighbor, the firemen down the street, etc. But they are NOT Vice-President. You see, the problem is that being popular or “just like you and me” is not what necessarily makes a good leader. What makes a good leader is sternness, respect for others’ ideals, responsibility with authority, intellectual sharpness–the list can go on and on. How many of you have ever worked for a company where you were absolutely ecstatic about meeting the CEO or VP–having a few beers and watching the game? Never? The truth is people look to leaders to be just that, Leaders. Not the “girl next door”, not the “hockey mom”. Hell, it’s not like she’s going to knock on anyone’s door asking for butter anyway. Just because I can relate to her doesn’t mean she’s gonna call me up when she’s needing advice on Foreign policy. That will never happen, for any of us. She will have to rely on her own wit–and she has none. I want a VP that knows more about this stuff than I do — not just as much if not less. I want a VP that at least has the integrity to speak up and say “you know what, I’m not ready”. Not just a VP that will say yes “without blinking”. You can’t possibly be serious about your views of Sarah Sandra. She is absolutely without a doubt not ready and anyone with half the mental capacity of George Bush can see that.

Well there’s nothing wrong with that but truth be known you’re too damn dumb to be VP and I don’t want a VP with a B.S. degree being gov. of a small nedneck state with no experience and don’t have a clue about the world and can’t answer a single damn question during a debate.

Alright now I live in one of the most racist cities in Florida and “One of the folks” generally references redneck good ole’ boys. Confederate flag waving individuals. So if this is what their meaning about Sarah Palin I’m sure you wouldn’t want her in office.

When you’re trying to be next in line to be president a B.S. don’t hold a lot of weight, Michelle is more qualified than Sarah to run the country..And based on how stupid she sounds I think she might in fact have Bullshyt Degree from the University of Bitbulls!
I was listening to the Michael Baisden show and he was talking to a listner who is a republican and Michael asked him if he thinks the President should be smarter then him and he said ‘NO’. Michael said this is why the country is in the state it is and I completely agree. Our leader NEEDS to be SMARTER, WITTY, etc. then the average Joe Schmo. I am not a hockey mom nor am I a Joe six pack which btw puts the word redneck in my mind when I heard Palin say that. I’m tired of her cutesy personality, her winking, her blowing kisses at people like she’s in some freaking beauty pageant. Stop bashing the other party and talk about what matters but she can’t because she doesn’t know what matters.
Sandra I’m gonna take this post as you just wanted to start a conversation w/ us and know what it means like the rest of us who are responding.

Same thing that was wrong with having a President with a C average. Now 8 years later we see what was wrong with that.
We CANNOT afford to wait and see if she is good enough we need to know.
& I personally am afraid of “one of the folk” having to interact with leaders of other countries. They already think we are stupid. If they talk to this woman she’ll just add the stamp of approval. Shoot Americans even think she’s not 2 bright.

Sarah is unpolished, unpresidential, uninformed and uneducated. “One of the folks, and that’s the problem” is so evident. McCain put her up to do his dirty work and to take the focus off of him. Her newness has worn off. She is showing her true colors and they don’t seem to match.
Furthermore, that yellow smoke stained “bicuspid” tooth is irritating the hell out of me. Girl get some Crest white strips and holla back. Ugh!

“One of the folks” is a term ,used by most, to describe a populist view. Populism is a political philosophy that supports the rights and power of the people in their struggle against the privileged elite. The problem with populism is has the danger of keeping intellectual and sound ideals out of the equation (i.e. the same populist strategy was used by Hitler to gain power in Germany). It feeds into peoples wants in the most dangers of ways. It locks out ideas, not just of the intellectual ideals of the Democratic Party, but it can potentially lock out the intellectual ideals of the Republican party, too. It feeds into the fears of change and moving forward in a forever advancing 21st Century. Populism defeats the advantages and ideals of both parties. It keeps ALL ideas locked out. It’s an extremely complicated but dangerous way running of policy. For a more clear view I suggest you YOUTUBE David Brooks (a republican conservative columnist for the NY Times) interview w/ The Atlantic’s Jeffrey Goldberg. Listen as he talks about the dangers of a Palin v.p. or future presidential candidacy. If that’s not enough to scare you. You can go back and find out ,how this poor kid from Austria became one of the most feared and dangerous men in the world. In basically had America caught up in this little war. I think we called it World War II.

They’re saying she’s just an average joe, ” just one of the folks” and this country needs more than that. It takes more than an average joe to run this country. You have to be above average, actually brilliant, like a Harvard Magna Cum Laude (first in class) graduate, like Obama. That’s all they’re saying.

The problem is she is an anti-intellectualist and is part of a neo-con movement that sprouted with Bush that rejects free thinkers and radical or even independent thought. That’s why she is a problem. To govern correctly, one must and should be wise and learned, especially in the ways of the world. Daria over there doesn’t get it and she never will and she’s okay with that. That’s the problem.

Girl that whole damned comment was on point.
They are trying to make it appear that she is just like the everyday man and people are beating up on her. The problem is that she is uneducated about the issues here at home and abroad. She is being used to gain the female vote, but as a woman I find it offensive that an ignorant woman is being used to sway me. Republicans are basically saying this uneducated white woman represents the average woman, the average American. Yeah that’s a f’kin problem because she does not represent me. I am not common or one of the folks and I never will be.
I think it means that she is a regular trailer trash type and that’s not a good thing because trailer trash, Jo Six pack and hockey sticks do not belong in the whitehouse..
