When Did D.L. Hughley Stop Being a Coon?

Black talk radio is still buzzing about the coon-tastic antics of comedian D.L. Hughley on his CNN “news” show this past weekend.

When CNN announced a new program hosted by the black stand up comedian (who isn’t even funny), what did you think the show would be about? Did you honestly think D.L. was hosting a news program on CNN? Lol.

D.L. Hughley moved up quickly through the ranks of black comedians to achieve national fame by cooning. He is hilarious to them, but not to most of us who don’t get that type of dry humor.

By hiring Hughley, CNN hopes to recreate the success of Dave Chapelle’s groundbreaking show. But unlike Chappelle, who used comedy to highlight the disparity between African-Americans and whites, Hughley is just a coon in a puppet show.

As one radio caller said on WAOK this morning, don’t stop at blaming CNN for using our people to humiliate us — blame BET, black radio and Hip Hop also. If you’re going to complain about the coonery on CNN, then you must also complain about the ongoing coonery and misogyny on BET in music videos and Hip Hop music on urban radio.

I’m not a big DL fan, but I listen to the TJMS and he gave good commentary regarding the election. I think that’s when CNN jumped on the bandwagon. I read an article from someone in the audience and they said the taping was horrible and you could tell he didn’t write his script and he looked uncomfortable reading it.

I caught a little bit of the show and was not impressed…I try to show my support for many of the African-American shows on T.V., but some are just not that good!!..

What’s so bad is that DL is an intelligent man..I once saw him on Bill Maher and he broke alot of stuff down..he just doesn’t know how to connect the two..Chris Rock is highly intelligent as well and will make you laugh and think at the same time..it’s something DL strives to be but constantly misses his mark

Ever thought DL aspired to be a journalist and saw himself one day working at CNN?
Could it be that comedy’s door was the only one that opened for him? It’s 08′( the year of new beginnings) Can we atleast embrace him for at getting the job at CNN. Now after a few show’s then we can say(if you actually watch the show) that he is indeed “crooning”. I seriously doubt DL, will allow “our” people to be looked down any further, unless it’s it to help us up.

DL did say something intelligent I heard.He said black people need to smile and laugh more and you know I couldn’t agree with him more because black people are a bit uptight.He said it’s the reason we don’t live long because we don’t as a black race have love for one of another.

Just because he is a comedian, it’s his “job” , doesn’t make him dumb, we need to stop labeling.It’s almost like judging.But I didn’t see the show so…

D-Grier show is on Comedy Central so I don’t have a problem with him doing his thang the way he’s doing it BUT D.L. trying to compete with the Daily Show (John Stewart) on CNN isn’t doing it for me

I haven’t even bothered to attempt to find out when his show comes on because I never liked DL’s comedy nor do I think he has talent. He is always cracking on someone in the audience and I HATE that. Talent is when you have a skit in your head and doing your comedy and not degrading your audience who PAID to see you.

This is the same man who cosigned with Don Imus in his calling the Rutgers Women Basketball Team as nappy headed hoes. He argued that it was a violation of freedom of speech and that Imus should not have been fired.

I take it that he was trying to be like Dave Chapelle (which I like) but he just made me cringe with some of the fukery he was talking about.

He found some OOOOLLLD clip of Sammy Davis Jr as a child being sworn in as the US President over a pork chop sandwich. He told the white people this clip will get them ready for Barack as PResident.

They kept making pimps and Ho’z referrences. He really need to take that kind of show to comedy central.

It’s ashame that blacks put each other down so much. It really is self hate. I guess some would say we have been “programmed” to be that way stemming back from our slavery days. All I know is it disgusts me. Almost every other race sticks together but us. We will tear each other down in a heartbeat…SMHHHHH…

There is NOTHING wrong with the way we are. Each race has it’s own cultural style. Society tells us that our way is ghetto, or wrong and we believe it. Please grow up and be open minded…don’t be brainwashed and I’m not making excuses for the things that ARE ghetto…I’m just saying.

Its always SOMETHING ain’t it…He’s not embarassing me, cuz DL can only be one person and he can’t represent all black people, simple as that. What he’s doing is HIS decision and his way of paying bills. Same goes for everybody else. People are too old to be pointing blame at others…Hip Hop, BET…they didn’t sign the contract with CNN. I would have to disagree..Some of the stuff “we” do is ghetto and down right embarrassing!!!..It has nothing to do with cultural style, it stems from a ghetto mentality.

I agree that we as a race don’t stick together as well as other races, but I would rather see us stick together on the positive African American culture…People know that African Americans can entertain, but when do we get known for being so much more?

Since when did black people have trouble with laughing and making fun of ourselves. Comic view on BET had the sucess that it did for years becuase comics got on stage and showed us the humor in our everyday lives.

I like DL as a comedian but the show was garbage.

@Peachizz, did you see the show? Comedy is it’s funniest when it’s true. DL’s constantly telling white people that this is who we are as black people was just off the mark.

You know, I’m kinda surprised DL is still around. Remember when he started getting drunk and negative on stage? Like he was going thru something? Well, he came out of that period in his life unfunnier than ever.

Watching this show makes me feel like I’m a decade behind. All of the stale racial comparisons and dead pan skits just aren’t working for me. I am SO sick of the box that he puts black people in… and then presents tha box to America like “this is us”. I thougth we were on the verge of change in 2008 — and I still have to hear DL Hugely talking all this NOTHING? I had higher hopes for the show. But in true DL form, he disappoints again.

I didn’t see the show but remember on “Martin” when Gina was Martin’s boss? His talk show was so lame. I like D.L., some don’t just like they don’t like Wanda Sykes either. I love Wanda on anything. Now Byron Allen annoys me. I don’t know how he keeps getting talk shows.

This is of topic but I had to comment on it bc I know sandra wont post it. T.I. was on the Chelsea Handler Show last night. Did anyone see it?

He was rather charming until Chelsea asked him if he had a girlfriend? He said that anybody who knows him knows his “situation”. He didn’t even refer to Tiny as his wifey, girlfriend or fiancee. Just a situation. If that ain’t offensive, I don’t know what is.

@ Terika… Does that mean that whatever a Nygga (yep i said it) get on TV and does, we HAVE to like it. Like i said, comedy is funniest when it’s actually true but DL’s stuff wasn’t and it was offensive.

When comedy is true, it doesn’t matter if it’s coming from a black person or white person, it’s still funny.

If DL’s material came from a white person’s mouth, the post would reach +200 talking about how this is 2008 and this is still how white folk see us, etc.

@ckarinwhite….you have a point. It’s just that we are exploited when being ghetto (in the media) more than the rednecks are…with the exception of this election. So we receive more criticism. Like someone said in another post about how the media always tries to find the most ghetto person in the crowd to respond to a question when something happens….

I personally think other races can be “ghetto” as well.

Honestly, I don’t think that clip was appropriate. Why?

CNN has a very broad audience. However, in my opionion, a very large portion of that audience already has pre-conceived stereotypes of African Americans BECAUSE OF THE IMAGES PURPORTRATED IN THE COMMUNITY FROM CNN. Honestly, this just reinforces what they already believe.

D.L is very well-spoken and I kinda like him on CNN. But, on the other hand, I’m afraid of what he might do.

Morning Fam…I watched DL’s show and at some points I cringed. Especially when he told that man he needed to break down what he was saying because he(DL) had a GED. I am all for watching our black people on tv. I have had conversations with Bird about Tyler Perry plenty but this show was just bad. Also, ghetto is a mentality. Maybe we are just sensitve becasue we are women…If it was just someone he was in a long term relationship with (e.g.Nelly/ Ashanti), it would not have been a big deal. But a woman with whom you share a house full of kids and this is your future and she stand by you through thick and thin – and you refer to her as your situation.

@ east point vet – exactly. i went into the show totally open. I’ve heard DL do several political commentaries and he was actually pretty good. I didn’t watch the show because I planned to. I was actually flipping the channels then stopped to see what he was saying. A couple of clips were cute, a couple clips i just didn’t understand, and a couple i totally understood and they just made me cringe.

I just had this convo lastnight. I didn’t see the show but I HATE, HATE, HATE when one black person does something and the WHOLE race gets lumped into it. One azzhole does not represent me.

I never see other races do that. The majority of serial killers are white but you don’t see the whole race being lumped into that group. (& these are the same ppl who tore up black families, treated them like cattle, & murdered them for no real reason.)

Speaking as person who is of a different culture/race blacks are not the only ones who put their own down. Other cultures do that too it’s just not that open about it, my culture degrades people based on a cast a person came from. The bottom line is that people are just ignorant regardless of what their culture is. Now a days anyone who even resembles what a terrorist looks likes is getting profiled by the government. America is a world runned by White people and even when Obama gets into office nothing much won’t change especially when it comes to the minority community. Change needs to start with the people who are living in the community first. I started the change by not having the same degrading thoughts that my culture has of others cast members. Just like a kind word can be passed forward so can our good actions to the generations that are ahead of us.

I’m tired of people trying to point blame at everything…Its DL’s SHOW….not the WHOLE ENTIRE AFRICAN AMERICAN RACEs’ show. If you’re not feeling it and you watched…then make a note not to watch again. I may tune in just to see what the problem is…but just like watching the Dave Chapelle show…I will not be offended. I mean sh*t that was Dave’s point of view, DL’s show would be HIS point of view…and its the same for every other show. I don’t remember people finding the Wayans Brothers so offensive when they did “In Living Color.” Were they blaming HIP HOP and BET for what the decided to put in their skits?

Hate it or love it, unfortunately, thats his point of view…but it still doesn’t speak for every black person that occupy this earth. When he said it could you relate? Well i didnt watch the show, but have heard people commenting Steve Harvey, Wendy Williams and Michael Baisden saying it’s inappropriate, now is not the time for this type of show etc…………..

Well I just watched the posted clip, and you know what??? I laughed. Freddie Mac DOES sound like a pimp name, and Fannie Mae sounds like some heavy set country grandma that can throw down in the kitchen. I dont know how the rest of the show went. I agree that maybe CNN isnt a good channel to have it on, at least it wasnt BET.

I haven’t liked DL since he called the Rudgers female b-ball players Nappy Headed H..s. As far as I’m concerned he’s too busy trying to be that “different ni&&a” that White folks will love. He tries to say the opposite of anything to get attention. He might as well get on his knees and suck a White man till the chitterling juice dribbles down his chin, ’cause that’s what his whole career has become. Somehow he got the White folks stamp of approval and and he’s been getting work for them ever since. He’s not even funny anymore.
