Police Release Balfour to State Custody

According to online reports, Chicago police have transferred custody of the “person of interest” in the murders of Jennifer Hudson’s mother and brother to the state Dept. of Corrections.

From the beginning, William Balfour, 27, the estranged husband of Jennifer Hudson’s sister Julia Hudson, was believed to be the gunman who shot and killed Darnell Donerson, 57, and her son Jason Hudson, 29, in their Englewood home on Friday.

But Balfour’s mother and other family members insisted he didn’t commit the homicides.

Hudson’s 7-year old nephew Julian King disappeared from the home after the murders and police believed he was in the company of Balfour, who was arrested Friday at the home of his pregnant girlfriend.

Following his arrest, Balfour’s status was downgraded from “suspect” to “person of interest.” He was never charged in the case.

In an emotional plea Saturday for the safe return of her son, Julia Hudson seemed to suggest that someone other than her estranged husband may have abducted the child.

Balfour remained in custody Sunday, but Chicago police spokeswoman Monique Bond said he would be transferred to the Illinois Department of Corrections “based on his active parole violation unrelated to this investigation.”

This move by the Chicago police signifies that the police did not have confidence or sufficient evidence to charge Balfour in the case.

Another troubling aspect is that two cars were reported missing from the crime scene. Police found a green Chrysler Concorde about a mile from the murder scene on Friday night. The car had been listed in the Amber Alert issued for King and Balfour.

The search is still on for Julian King and a 1994 white Chevrolet Suburban belonging to Jason Hudson. The FBI has joined in the search.

On Saturday, Jennifer Hudson took to her Myspace blog to make a personal plea for the public’s help in finding her nephew.

She also posted two pictures of the boy in the shirt he was wearing when he was last seen.

I have a 5 year old and I just keep thinking of what I would be doing if it was him, I think I would be praying and running around the streets like a mad woman! We pray that this child be returned safe and sound!

@indesign I am with you on that. The thought of my babies being taken is just too much. Or Lord, I am praying Julian is safe. I can’t understand what someone would want with him unless he could i.d. them and even still he’s just a baby. :(

Interesting turn of events…it is amazing how a picture of guilt can be painted so quickly. Also, he was immediately guilty because of his thug like image. Turns out it may not even be him…DAMN SHAME!!

It doesn’t sound like the evidence is being processed correctly. I hope they find that little boy. This is too much tragedy for a heart to bear.

I wonder if this will be a plot to extort money from Jennifer. You never know the things people will do when times are hard! This is big in PR and in a lot of really poor places where they kidnap and try to get ransoms.

This sounds almost like somebody got involved with the wrong people doing something they had no business doing

    Thanks for the update SR!

@ Mika… same here. That’s the major thing. This is really a complex situation as it unfolds, what appears to be the case may not be at all. JHud and her family are in my prayers!

The police continue to say this is a case of domestic abuse — despite the fact that they have released their only suspect. So who else in the family could have done it? :?

JHud is offering 100k reward for her nephews return. It just breaks my heart reading about this sad situation. I pray for this little boy. But something just isn’t right, what seemed to be such a clear case isn’t. In the meantime no updates regarding the situation, no new leads, suspects nothing. This puzzle just doesn’t seem to be fitting together.
