It seems that after having a CHANGE of heart, the Obama camp went in and CHANGED their website to remove the word “required” since that word was causing such a ruckus amongst those who hold the Constitution near and dear to their hearts. But don’t worry, a quick thinking member of a message board took a screen grab of the original wording here. This is what happens when people work together to protect your Constitutional rights from others who may not care about the Constitution. ]
Is this the “change” that you were hoping for?
Obama will call on citizens of all ages to serve America, by developing a plan to require 50 hours of community service in middle school and high school and 100 hours of community service in college every year. Obama will encourage retiring Americans to serve by improving programs available for individuals over age 55, while at the same time promoting youth programs such as Youth Build and Head Start. So the Great Community Organizer Wants to mobilize all Americans to “serve” community service hours — including retirees 55 and over.
I love the part that says your children will be “required” to work community service hours. And if your children resist? Well, Obama’s Civilian Security Force will have to deal with them.
Not only is this patently unconstitutional, but I don’t think that anyone can “require” Americans who are not convicted felons to work for no wages. Can they? I guess anything is possible in this new ObamaNation.
Since I can’t vote, I guess that means I’m exempt?

But this is a condition of the school your childen attend and you know that from day one. I am 41 and you can’t change the rules of America in this fashion. Forced community service is not going to happen.

I have never seen someone make up so much drama in order for them to have a life. This is ridicoulous! Sandra what has come over you? You were not always like this.
Yup because community service is such a terrible thing. Goodness forbid we do things to keep our children out of trouble and make people help bring unity to the US. Nope we don’t want that! That would be too much like right.
I don’t see anything wrong with teaching school kids work ethics. Thats why so many drop out of school because they are lazy and have not guidance no one taught them how to get up everyday and be productive members of society.
When Clinton put the welfare to work program together no on said a thing. People on the roll either got up and got a job or participated in the WEP program. Many are now better off and productive members of society.
At least when they are doing community service their pants will be pulled up. Perhaps they will have uniforms with logo’s that allow people to know they are students. When people work for things they start developing a better sense of self-respect and pride. I am sure the program will offer more than cleaning dirty streets as suggested. These young African American men need mentors and programs to develop talents.

I have no problems with any of that, some of these kids need to get out and give back to their communities, it will make them better people.
And when I graduated you where required to have served a set amount of community service hours before you could receive your high school diploma. I don’t see what the problem is, I did my community service and got my diploma.

Are you serious? How could you be oppose to people serving their communities? Why shouldn’t we teach our children to volunteer. Help those less fortunate than us. Give time to things that are more important than sitting in front of a TV or doing things that don’t benefit us as people. This was the worst post that I have read on this site

Okay that’s one week a year, something we should all give anyway. Everybody wants something for nothing, look at all the people who experience financial hardship and go to the non-profit orgs for help. Most of their workers are volunteers, as I am one myself, but the recipients almost never give back when they are up on their feet. This a part of the “redistibution of wealth” plan that Democrats so blatently believe in, doesnt have to be monetary, just give back!
Once again, you are ill-informed. Students attending college will be required to complete 100 hours of community service in order to receive a $4000 tax break for tuition. There is nothing wrong with helping your community. My husband and myself volunteer. When my children get old enough, they will volunteer as well. Us black folks spend 100 hours shopping, partying, drinking with our friends, but we can’t take time out to volunteer? Whatever.
I am all for it because some people need to learn about giving back to others and doing good for one another. It will not kill some of these kids to volunteer once in a while. It builds character and teaches humility. We should all want to change some of these old habits we have and start setting new standards with the youth of today. My mother made my siblings and I volunteer and being honest it grows on you after a while. You being to look forward to it.
I don’t see a damn thing wrong with volunteering. I do it EVERY Sunday from 3 to muthafu[kin 7, when I KNOW I could be using those hours to line my pockets. Guess what I don’t mind one bit. I been trying for the past 2 years to get my daughter involved in volunteering somewhere, but she wasn’t of age. You best believe when she does become OF AGE, she will be right alongside me doing something.
And all while folks getting their “billygoat gruffs” full on Thanksgiving and sittin up somewhere mad and ungrateful by 12 because they didn’t get what they wanted Christmas morning, guess where me and mine will be……….IN SOMEBODY’S SOUP KITCHEN SERVING OUR HOMELESS AND NEEDY!

I think volunteering is fundamental. My daughters school requires it for the parents, my husband is an Omega, and I’m a Zeta, so volunteering is nothing new to us all around. What harm is one more ‘charatable’ effort? Won’t hurt me any.

I had to do community service to graduate from my public high school….and from my private undergraduate. my current employer does plenty of customer service right now, so I don’t know what the big deal is…..
I think making children serve their communities is a wonderful idea. It gives kids a sense of pride and accomplishment. It’s better than them sitting around playing XBOX and texting all day. Kids just want want want and don’t know anything about helping out their fellow man. I think seniors that can help out should also. As long as they aren’t disabled.

the idea of a “militia” serving the community dates to the revolutionary war era. but i guess books are as popular as they used to be because all sandra can think about is how negative this idea is. while i plan on challenging some of the ideas/legislation i know pres. elect obama will put forward, i find it incredibly sad that the daily postings of what was once a wonderful site, has turned into fox news. the constant misinformation, lies and pure hateful tone has led me to believe i need to move on from this site. this will be my last post and it will no longer be book marked on my computer.

Sources please? I am curious as to where this came from. Secondly I think community service is great. I had to do it in high school for a class and I volunteered many times since as an adult most recently at a poetry workshop for boys and girls club last month. It’s a rewarding experience and I encourage that to anyone. Hell, my kids will have to because I want them to gain perspective.

Doing those community service hours kept me involved in positive programs featured in my community and through my church as well…not to mention it kept me out of trouble and was very enriching as well.

Auntie I am REQUIRED to pay taxes, FICA, whoever the hell that is so one more thing that I can at least SEE where my efforts are helping is still not too much to ask. Most seniors want something that makes them feel needed and appreciated anyway, its not exactly too much to ask.
If your Grandparents are involved in church or any community functions they are doing community service anyways…I really don’t think the older people will have an issue doing this.
There are various methods of community service…it doesn’t necessarily have to involve manual labor. My Grandparents were very active in their community…and my older aunts or uncles that didn’t do anything but sit in the house became ill, lost mobility skills and began to suffer acute memory loss.
This is a good way to keep older people involved…instead of society just putting them to the side and saying they are too old to function!
Its not like Obama is going to have the terminally ill doing community service…I’m pretty sure as with everything there will be some exceptions to the rules.
AND? I SEE NOTHING WRONG WITH WHAT HE’S “PROPOSING”, AND NOTICE HE SAID “ENCOURAGE” THIS, NOT THIS IS WHAT IT IS OR OFF WITH YOUR HEAD. I understand the concept behind the thought. It goes back to putting the accountablitly for our well being back in our own hands.
But i don’t see how it will be required. A few years ago, one state had to start serving arrest warrants to parents who weren’t taking their kids in to have their proper immunizations/ well being shots. If you can’t make a parent take their kids to the doctor once every other year for a checkup, how can you possibly make them hold their kids accountable for volunteering 50 hrs.

RIGHT!!! I’m tired of people depending on others to clean-up our communities!!! Its our communities maybe if people had to participate in building it up then they wouldn’t be so quick to tear it down!!!

Shoot adults need to volunteer, too. We have to lead our children by example. Most elderly people I know like to volunteer if they are medically able, it gives them something to do with their time. AGAIN I don’t see the problem! Where is the negative aspect of this?

Well there you go lol!!! Grandma don’t have to get her community service on if she don’t want to…personally, I’m with it.
Shoooot my Mama had me doing clothing and food drives until I got out of her house…and then I was an after-school voluntary counselor for children ages 9-11 when I was in college.
I have done so much community service work…I was finished doing those mandatory community service hours for High School before I was finished with Junior High. I actually thank my Mama for that now…I couldn’t understand the importance of community involvement until I was in college.
I think encouraging older people to volunteer would do a world of good. They have been there, done that, seen some and interacted with others. That is whats missing from many communities. I remember when I was a young girl if I did something wrong my older neighbors checked me. Our community is missing that type of unity. My mother always told me to “respect my elders”. Men wont even get up and give a seat to pregnant women or elderly women. Maybe if they interacted with adults they would learn more respect. How can you complain about the state of young children but your against them first learning to respect their elders? This is a beginning of a cycle that will uplift our communities better. Having the youth and adults interact will be great a lot of my wisdom comes from communicating with my elders
it has looong been a policy of wake county schools to do community service hours in order to graduate from high school here. it starts in middle school. if you don’t do it by the time you get to 12 they WILL hold your diploma.
it has been in place so long that kwallace had to do it back in 1995.

They always said the right things to make sense of what was going on in my life. Because they had been there and done that way before me.
And for the record, community service is usualy something of your choosing. So even if it is required, that doesnt mean you have to pick up trash or shovel sh!t….U can read to kids, be a big brother or big sister, deliver food to the elderly, help decorate chistmas tress….The options are endless… But you would know that if you really did do community service “sometimes”……….LIAR

Count me in! My husband and I volunteer every year at a homeless shelter during Christmas. It’s our way of giving back for being blessed throughout the year. We take my stepson along so he can be inspired to be like President Obama one day! So he has started volunteering at an early age. When this kicks in it will be no big deal to him, and he’ll be ready to do whatever is “required” or “encouraged”

Yes..I think it should be required. I think it will help our children. I think adults should have some type of requirment to. Let’s not forget, if your doing community service (not for a crime) it can be listed on your resume as volunteer work. Law or not…Let’s get involved in our community and it’s great to start at an early age.

Many high schools (public schools) are required to do this already. My cousin was required to do 75 hours of community service in an Atlanta Public School-Open Campus. That was about 3 years ago!

3 of my best friends are young ladies I met b4 graduating from college last year. We spoke a few weeks ago about looking into giving back. We’re not rich by any means but we’re very much inspired not only by Barack Obama but Michelle Obama! So we’re in the process of finding volunteer opportunities.
There is nothing wrong with giving back. Its time to upgrade anyway and I’m motivated. I’m tired of seeing males with their pants sagging and young women acting “hard” (so called gangsta) like they’re men…If more of us provide a great example rather than just looking the other way, we may pass onto them positive self-images they can be proud to sport!
I could not graduate high school wihout doing
80 hours of community service. It was required for all
students and that was over 10 yrs ago!

My son is 20 now but he attended a public middle school and high school in Los Angeles and they both asked the students to volunteer for community service. Some of the high schools will place a star on the diploma to show that the child volunteered. Many colleges are looking not only for a high grade point average, but they would also like to see what services and organizations the students were involved with. I don’t know if you say the things that you say just to get feedback or are you really that foolish. actually its nothing really new because in H.S you are required to do about 40 hours and most of the kids end up wanting to do more then 40 because they love it.

Well in order to graduate for a GA highschool, you must perform community service. I think it was 25-30 hours back in my day, but probably more now.
I think community service is necessary for everyone to value what we have. I don’t think that it will become a mandatory thing as Sandra says, but I do believe there will be other benefits received for community services provided:
1. College tuition credit
2. Social benefits credit
not to mention …
Respect for self
Respect for elders
Respect for community
Respect for life. and nature
Community involvement
Learning to share…
I have no problem volunteering. I volunteer everyday of my life…it only takes a moment to share and help someone in need. It doesn’t have to be hours, but giving of your time is essential to the happiness of others and yourself!

Thank GOD OBAMA won! I am from the Chicago land area that he helped out of the HOUSING Crisis! when the Mayor torn down all the housing projects!! and people had no where to go! OBAMA made sure section 8 was approved and job training was available! My cousin who once use to rely on on drug money to support her kid! recieved a Phelbomity certificate and went on to study nursing! she will graduate 09′! and she will no longer be on Section 8! The people suffer because we have no resources! and Obama made it happen in Chaicago and he can make it happen for the world!
as far as community serve for our youth! they need to do something other than play viedo games and watch celebrities!
Its GREAT!!! if this is part of the plan! TERRIFIC our youth need Direction and organization!! and 50 hours works out to 1 hour a week for a year! 100 hours is 2 hours a week!! Girl its better than the “Be all you can be option” where they pay for college only if you get out alive!!

Sandra, the man won the election. How long with you continue to slander his name? Get over it. Like many people already said, many schools require kids to do community service anyway. Are they wrong? Hell, everyone should give back. We’d be much better off. However, clearly your reporting is off. Forced community service will never happen.

I dont understand why it would be a bad thing to require middle and high school students to volunteer a certain number of community service hours?
Some universities look favorably on volunteer hours.
With a nation of materialistic and spoiled young kids, what is the harm in making them do something for somebody other than themselves?
