Beyonce: ‘I want to be an Icon’

Poor Beyonce. First Knaye West clowns her by saying Rihanna is the best thing that ever happened to her. And now her album, which dropped Tuesday, will fail to do the numbers she expected in the first week.

According to Billboard.com, both Beyonce and her dad have their hearts set on her double album selling 750,000-1 Mil. But first day estimates put the sales for I Am… Sasha Fierce at a paltry 500K-550K. Way too low for Bey and Matt’s standards:

“I think we’ll sell 750,000 to 1 million copies [in the] first week,” says Music World head Mathew Knowles, Beyoncé’s father and manager. “I know that’s ambitious with the declining market, but Beyoncé is so focused on transitioning from pop star to icon that we’re paying attention to every single detail.”

“I want to be an icon,” Beyoncé says. “That’s why this is a double-album. One side has songs that are more mainstream and another has my more traditional R&B songs for my fans who’ve been there the whole time. Some of it sounds like Barbra Streisand, Karen Carpenter and the Beatles around the 1970s.” Source

I didn’t know a double album is required for icon status. Can someone explain that to me?

Take a pkg of cream cheese (softened), a can of pumpkin, cinnamon and nutmeg, and powedered sugar to taste. Mix all very well. Serve with ginger snap cookies.

This is my pet peeve about both of them….more so Kanye…they toot their own horns instead of letting others do it for them. When you toot your own horn nobody believes your goals or you saying you are the Michael Jordan of Hip Hop or whatever….I like Bey and she is a GREAT performer but I think she has to have a little more originality to become an icon…having your hands in several baskets alone (movies, albums, etc.) doesn’t make you an icon…but I guess.

I like Rihanna too ….I think what Rihanna has going for her over Bey is her music was diff. genre’s from jump…it’s doesn’t seem “forced” when you hear a pop track from her…a lot of artist are trying to go pop and international now because it’s making more money…i think that’s where Rihanna has the advantage…as long as that’s still working for artist.

I completely agree with you on Rhianna. She has alot more international appeal bc of her music, which is univeral dance music. First of all an ICON I dont think so. Beyonce does not create timeless music. She is in the here and now and as long as she stays there sorry not going to happen. #2 ICONS usually have a personality which she is really lacking and they take up a cause. When I saw she had the nerve to put 5 measely songs on each CD I was like, WTF?!?! When you say double CD, people expect 2 WHOLE CDs!! Not some daym sampler ish!! I made a copy for a friend of mine and compiled that ish onto ONE blank CD…ain’t wasting MY freakin blanks!!! That’s a good question. I remember in the Bday deluxe cd she had a spanish nortena (nortena’s are mexican folk songs!) version of irreplacible. I was like, WOW. I like that she tried to reach out to all her spanish speaking fans.

I don’t think it makes you an icon, but it helped her cross over into the Latino market, making her a household name in spanish speaking homes!

Beyonce is talented but she is feeling pressure to remain the queen bee. That whole fiasco with the song “If I were A Boy” was just embarrassing. Beyonce claims she comes up with her own material but then she took credit for someone else’s work which is not cool. She did own up to it but only when it was aready public knowledge.It really cast a shadow on her credibility. She needs to check the people who are suppose to shield her from things like this. I know she has a working relationship with her dad but she may need to use Donald Trump’s famous quote “YOUR’E FIRED” because he is not on top of his game either. Sorry Bey fans but she is not putting out quality music and the sales will reflect it. I think 500k-550k in sales is good in this economy and she should not feel bad about it but the last artist to sell a million records was Lil’ Wayne.

@Ms. Tia….actually if anything Rihanna is being herself more now then she was before. She’s said when she was first signed they were trying to make her be more like Beyonce’…image wise. She wanted to cut her hair but they told her no…eventually she snuck and did it and they loved it.

As much promotion Beyonce does she should be moving way more than 550k units, this is about the same amount BDay did in its first week. Beyonce fanbase has not grown, the same fans are purchasing multiple copies. Alicia Keys pushed 750k, Wayne pushed 1m, Taylor swift recently pushed 500k…..Beyonce is pushing Taylor Swift #’s and she is a new country artist. No one is really checking for Beyonce, it is all smoke and mirrors.

I’ve never bought a Beyonce album….not even a Destiny’s Child ablum for that matter. I don’t hate her, I just think she tries way too hard. You can’t deny her talent but, I’m pretty sure Barbara Streisand never said “I want to be an icon”. I wish she would learn how to fall back and stay out of the spotlight for a while so the people can actually miss her.
