Hi Sandra,

I’ll start off by admitting that I am a fan of Beyonce’s work. But as of lately, I’ve noticed that her originality is gradually fading.. Her performance at the American Music Awards most recently caught my attention. Through out her “Single Ladies” performance, I couldn’t help but notice that her dramatic dances, movements and animated facial expressions were easily influenced by performers in the gay ball room scene. But at the end of the performance, Beyonce blatantly ripped off the trademark “ponytail grip” that legendary ballroom performer Leyomi Mizrahi is known for. Beyonce actually channeled many different Leyomi elements during her performance. If you take a look at the YouTube clips below, you’ll clearly see what I’m talking about.

P.S. I’m not a hater. I love Beyonce. I just wish that she would be more original nowadays.

I KNOW all of B’s choreographers and probably alot of her friends are gay and are aware of the Gay Ballroom scene. I agree that she borrows from alot of people, but I think its mostly from what people show her and bring to her. I assume they bring her stuff, like, “B, you gotta see this!!” She doesn’t choreograph her dance moves!
That being said, this Leyomi chick is pretty fierce…that matrix move was the bizness!!

She should have bowed out of the game gracefully after B-day while on top so that she could focus on her acting career and marriage. JMO!!!! I am no big Bey fan but all the same people talking about her jocking someones style must not like Usher, Neyo, or Ciara either. Many artists are inspired by others. Ever heard the saying “Imitation is a compliment”? Some people hate on Beyonce so much that I feel she’s doing everything right. If she wasn’t important you wouldn’t be talking about her. For example, when is the last time Sandra had a story about Ashanti?

Its one thing to be inspired by other historical artists or contemporaries even, but its quite another to take from emerging artists and slap her name on it like she did with BC jean. I used to think that perhaps she didn’t know half of what was going on, but now I doubt it, I think the chick is just cutthroat because she still controls her brand.

This was the first place I’d ever heard of “gay ballroom”. Meaning pop culture hasn’t caught on.

However, Benny on Top model does these same moves.

My point is she could be giving props to this ballroom shit. Bringing it to the masses. Who choreographed “single ladies?”. Wasn’t it a gay guy? Last I checked you can’t steal dance moves. There were probably a lot of people in that audience that knew who she was “paying homage” to.

Who cares?!?!?!?!? Unlike most artists who does an automatic repeat of a current performer, at least she, and her choreaographers, are channeling old school art that most of us have never heard of nor seen.
At least she’s bringing back names that probably would have gone down in the little to unknown history books.

So Sandra, not to discredit you, BUT maybe you should cut the girl some slack. This music business is really not built on originality anymore, infact, everyone borrows. In most cases, its a compliment to the originator. How do you explain, Usher, Omarion, Chris Brown coz they all borrow from Michael Jackson who borrowed from James Brown. I dont see any wrong doing in borrowing a dance move, she is “Sasha Fierce” and Leyomi, is FIERCE, so its a compliment to her, i doubt Leyomi is crying over it, so why should we. Very few artist are original or haven’t copied any other artist-just use the same measuring stick when you compare them and not just beyonce-oh yeah can rihanna dance at all-I can’t recall any dance moves she did ever being worth mentioning…but she’s the best thing since slice bread to the same person whose upset that beyonce jacked someone elses dance moves, at least bey can dance and does it quite well. I wonder why rihanna dance skills arent an issue-can you say this critique is motivated by personal bias.
