This is in response to those who have emailed me with their assertions that the “citizens of America” voted for Barack Obama by a landslide. The real numbers hardly support this.
- Black Americans make up 31% of registered voters. Only 13% of those voted for Obama
- Out of 300 million Americans, only 1/3 voted in this year’s election
- Out of that 1/3, only 63 million Americans voted for Obama. That’s 63 million out of 300 million Americans. Hardly a landslide
- Stocks fell over 500 points the day after the election. That’s the steepest post-election drop in history
- Obama’s popular vote margin over McCain (52.4-46.5) is less than Bush’s margin over Dukakis (53.4-45.6), and Bill Clinton’s margin over Dole (49.25-40.71)
- Democrats failed to win a filibuster-proof 60-seat majority in the Senate. Meaning that while Americans voted to elect Obama, they didn’t want a majority Democratic Senate that would slide his bills through

I enjoy your website but you are such a negative person. Why can’t you rejoice with the rest of us. I am happy to have a Democrat vs a Republican in office. I will say this Obama will not be able to clean up the mess created by the Republicans in his first year. That will take time. He will need support from both side in order for US to see change. Stop fighting it and embrace it.

Sandra, I’m confused at why you have to discredit what is clearly a VICTORY for all of America. Do you feel the need to be RIGHT so bad that you are trying to bring the rest of us down? Atleast 2 of those bulletins arent true. Oh yea Sandra the landslide was compared to McCain’s numbers not to 300 million americans.
The landslide reference is probably because of the electoral votes (which matters the most): Barack – 349 vs McCain – 163. Barack received double over McCain.

They last ones went late into the night or the next day before they could make a call. I was getting ready to put some clothes in the wash machine. i walked past my TV and saw everybody start cheering and was like “WHAT THE HEELL?” I didn’t even realize that CA’s polls were closed.

Sandra I remember seeing that 94% of African Americans that voted did so in favor of Obama. I think your stats may be wrong. You also have to account for all of the first time voters that came out. The whole event was wonderful. Not just because he was black but he truely moved people. The apathy that has enveloped our country is truely being replaced by hope and willingness to do something to make a change.
I live in Cali and the ban against same sex marriages was approved. 5-10 years ago people would have just accepted that. But last night gays and lesbians took the streets in protest. I don’t necessarily agree with homosexuality but I love the fact that people are now willing to do something for change instead of sitting back and just accepting whatever is dealt to them.

Total pop of America is 300 Mil
80 Million is children leaving 220 million adults
2.3 million people are incarcerated leaving 217.2 Million people eligible voters out of that total there was over 120 million people that acutally voted leaving only 92 million people who didnt vote. 64 % of america voted.out of that percent over 50% voted for Obama. the highest turn out since 1902( check CNN for verifications of my numbers)
Also 90 % of the 30 % of African American voters voted for Obama, as wells as 65% of latinos. Also The DEM hold a majority of both levels of congress. Which means that they hold all levels except the supreme courts. This is not including the rep that do sometime go across the isle to vote along with the dems, while not fillibuster proof, they still hold a large majority. Any want proof a date, let me know.
if republicans..even ones as staunch as elizabeth hasselback can get over the fact that obama has won and get behind the president elect….you can too…if not i know there is a one way ticket back to the uk somewhere out there for you

I hear that …. one of my closest friends told me she didn’t vote because she isn’t political and I was so shocked and taken back. People have the tendecy to forget or ignore the past, people fought, sacrificied and gave blood, sweat and tears for this moment. My happiness and high won’t go down because of it … not on here … not in a lifetime. Its an accomnplishment and I am glad and proud for my people. To see the youth voting, so many for the 1s time … love it and will celebrate it!

We pushed Obama’s win into a major landslide. It’s the electoral vote that really counts and Barack won 349 to McCain’s 163. So these stats mean nothing. We had a record turnout at the polls. Waited hours in line to make our voices heard. I just read an article on CNN that the Republican party is very worried because there was a high turnout of Latino voters also. They are worried because a lot of them switched parties to vote for Barack. Don’t let anyone, including Sandra Rose’s negative comments deter us from our happiness! States like Virginia voted Democratic and they hadn’t voted Democratic since Lyndon B. Johnson ran! And it was just announced 30 mins ago that Barack took North Carolina and we just won the Oregon senate! God is Good! We did it people…White, Black, Asian, Latin…we all did it! Lets celebrate! What are the source of your numbers. You can also use some reading comprehension skills, this does not make sense:Black Americans make up 31% of registered voters. Only 13% of those voted for Obama.
You are saying only 13% black register voters came out and voted for Obama with those long lines, know you know that is a lie. There is no way that 87% of blk registered voters stayed home or voted for McCain.

Obama won! Negative comments and accusations mean absolutely nothing at all. He won, I’m proud I took part in it, I’m proud of the community that took part in it, I’m proud of the man that made the community take part in it, I’m proud of the people who look past his skin color and voted for him. I’m proud of the people who had faith and him. Damnit I’m just proud and nobody can steal my joy!

So, your statement about only 1/3 of the population voting is false. A better statistic would be what percentage of ELIGIBLE voters (over 18, not incarcerated, not a felon in some states) cast a ballot on Tuesday?
Stats are a dangerous thing for the person with an agenda.
As to your popular vote margin stat: Obama was the first Democrat to get over 50% of the popular vote since Jimmy Carter in 1976. Clinton, as popular as he was, never got more than 50% of the country to vote for him. Point is: Obama won the majority of the popular vote.
You are cherry-picking election stats. I mean, if you are going to include popular vote margins, why not mention Bush/Clinton, Bush/Gore, Bush/Kerry, or the host of other close elections? Obama won by a popular vote margin of 6%. That is hardly razor thin.
