Black Designers Pissed at Michelle Obama

The Kool aid hangovers haven’t even worn off yet and already black folks are grumbling. Black designers are not happy with Michelle Obama’s choice of a Cuban-American designer for her Inaugural outfits.
Michelle’s choice of gowns were perplexing and met with ridicule from the media and public alike. It’s as if Michelle doesn’t have any close friends willing to be honest with her and tell her she looked a mess on the biggest night of her life.
Anyway, here’s what Amnau Eele, co-founder of the Black Artists Association had to say in an interview with WWD:
“It’s fine and good if you want to be all ‘Kumbaya’ and ‘We Are the World’ by representing all different countries. But if you are going to have Isabel Toledo do the inauguration dress, and Jason Wu do the evening gown, why not have Kevan Hall, B Michael [Knight], Stephen Burrows or any of the other black designers do something too?
“It’s one thing to look at the world without color but she had seven slots to wear designer clothes. Why wasn’t she wearing the clothes of a black designer? That was our moment.” (LINK)
I agree. You can’t please everybody. But you know “we” would have had Michelle looking right on her big night.

I never even thought of the race of the designers. Some ppl have way too much time of their hands to complain about petty things. She will be our First Lady for many years. I am sure she will not stick with one designer.
Ok … seriously … I’ve SEEN alot of the “black” designers work .. and I wouldn’t have picked them either … all of them can take a big cup of sit-they-azz-down and get ova it .. now If korto was complain .. SHE would have a valid point … Myhcael Knight’s .. ummm NO ghetto-bougie
Whatever. I personally did not like the dress but it wasn’t my choice. Despite my dislike for the dress I still thought she looked beautiful. Just cause she is black don’t mean she gotta pick something a black person made. What if everything those designers made were not her taste. I ain’t gone wear nothing that I don’t like just cause it was made by a certain someone. Damn. He has only been in office for 3 days and already this bullish has started. Get ready Obamas, it is gonna be a looooonnng four years!!!
here WE go….
they need to get over it, it’s not that serious
GIVE IT A BREAK, JUST BECAUSE YOU ARE BLACK DOESN’T MEAN THAT EVERY PRODUCT,SERVICE, OR GOOD HAS TO BE PURCHASED BY A BLACK BUSINESS OWNER. IT WOULD BE NICE, BUT HOW IN THE HELL CAN WE EXPECT MICHELLE TO DO WHAT WE AS A COMMUNITY DON’T DO OUR DAMN SELVES
AS MANY OF US FREQUENT WOLLY WORLD (WALMART)….
ay carumba!!! my ppl my ppl my ppl….just cuz she black dont mean she gotta rep for every black person designer, hand bag maker, shoemaker, jeweler, or hair/makeup stylist…godly do u think the white ppl would make this fuss??? if the designer were then what u gotta say??? SHEESH!!!!!!

I am glad you said it and not me. That guy who likes to wear the peep toe shoes can’t dress a fly without making it look foolish.
As much as I did not care for either outfit she wore, she did know how to work what she had.
Black Designers – get over it!…why do they think they are entitled to s**t?…Were they clammering on doors to outfit Mrs Obama when she was out on the campaign trail?..please!
NO, YOU WOULDN’T HAVE HAD HER LOOKIN RIGHT BUT INSTEAD LOOKING A MESS.
GO ON MICHELLE AND DO YOU!!!
This is absolutely ridiculous! There are so many more important things to be worried about right now. OMG.. I can’t believe people are starting with this shyt..
with the exception of Tracy Reese many black designers clothes are too over the top.
what did you people want her to wear? She by Sheree
Oh go cry in a corner… Michelle Obama looked beautiful… HATERS all day..
That is ridiculous. People just love to complain.
let the HBIC wear what she wants
jmo
Whether or not a black designer made the dress that Michelle Obama was wearing is so insignificant to challenges that WE as Americans are facing. at some point, we should ALL be looking at what we are going to have to do to push our country forward. I guess the hard cold reality should be setting in soon, when Obama will be calling on everyone for their sacrfice to this country. I ownder who will be answering the call?
She chose to wear dresses made by minorities. Black is not the only minority in America. I give her props (though I did not like the Inaugural gown) for giving two unknown/little known minority designers a chance..
Crabs in a barrel I tell ya…Crab in a barrel.
I guess she should have Rocked baby Phat or House of deron .. came out lookin like a 3 dolla whore on 2 for 1 night ….
BooooOoooOOOooooo to the “black designers” who are trying to diminish all that took place on 1/20
You know what’s so funny, not to mention hypocritical, these are probably the same folks who said we shouldn’t vote for Obama JUST BECAUSE HE IS BLACk (coughSandracough), but now Michelle should pick a designer JUST BECAUSE HE/SHE IS BLACK. Fukk outta here!
o.k I do like Kevin Hall and some of Stephen Burrows designs so there are some black designers that would’ve hooked her up BUT she shouldn’t feel obligated to have picked a designer just because of their race. (although I would’ve love to see a nice Korto dress on her)
We can make the same argument about all these other celebritites in the spotlight who love to purchase things from these name brands that don’t even want “us” wearing chit they make.
Now playing devils advocate, the writer does make a very good point about her having 7 opportunities to wear something by a AA designer but didn’t. She definately could’ve gave somebody some support at least once out of those 7 apperances. As long as she didn’t let Andre get his hands on her but she may as well because I’m sorry but that dress was not the business. She looked cute but that dress was UGLY!
I thought we were leaving the race card at the door? Dayum these folks get ridiculed for being black, then for not being black enough, whats really going on?
Not all black designers are over the top and I have always said that it would be nice if our black stars would make more of an effort to use black desingers when possible, esp. at red carpet events. I have always been about supporting my people whenever possible thats just me. I am not knocking Michelle for the designer she selected she has the right to where what and whom she is wearing. I love Kara Sun and Kato from project runway they both had very nice evening wear. Steve wonders wife also has some nice pieces.
She didn’t wear a black designer because SHE DIDN’T FEEL LIKE IT! That’s why.
She wore what she felt comfortable wearing.
I hate when blacks say “support your people”, for work that’s mostly half ass done.. Like the carwash!
Maaaaan, I went to a black car wash full of niggas – trying to support my people, right.. First off, it was a handwash carwash.. Secondly, 2 guys stopped drying my car to talk to a dude who drove up.. Thrid, an employee was hustling trees from his vehicle. Fourth, it took almost an hour and my windows had rain spots on them..
I NEVER have this problem @ the hispanic car wash.
Not that a black designer would’ve messed up, but I’m just sayin.
@Vice Dice
Damn, Tell us how you really feel.
I dont even want to comment on this… NEXT>>>>
I always find it amazing how some blacks love to assume and put all black business in the same category. Not all black business do a bad job just like not all white/hispanic businesses do a great job. I believe in giving my service and money to somebody who has good customer service and will also do a good job that can and does exist with black owned businesses. We wonder why we don’t get ahead. Jews help out Jews and whites help out whites but we will find any and every excuse not to even try and support a black owned busisness. I am not even a business owner but I feel their pain. I just had to talk about a black hair salon just last wk but you best believe I found another one to get my hair did at..lol To each their own. I will do what I can for my ppl thats just who I am.
How many of these celebs wear black designers for real…and we’ve known most of em alot longer than we’ve known michelle.
I support good businesses. Thats just me. I go to the best hair salon i can find. For the last year, i’ve been trying to find a GOOD black hair salon, and i’m oh so close to giving up. i think that at the end of the day, people will support good businesses. Despite who runs it. There are a few black owned restaurants by me, and they get good business cuz their customers are satisfied and happy. Thats what it comes down to. If i’m spending i expect the best, so i’m not gonna spend $$$ on something because its black owned.
And she chose a young and upcoming designer….whats the big deal…yeesh
Michelle chose what she felt best fit her given her goals, perhaps black designers didn’t give her any viable option and she went with what worked. I don’t doubt that MrsO supports black owned when possible, just didn’t happen this time around.
I support my people as long as I am getting equal or better service/products. I hope everyone does the same.
STOP PLAYING…..Sandra you know darn well YOU aren’t part of the “WE” when it comes to anything Obama!! Besides she looked stunning….and who cares which designer made her dress!!
WE always gotta find a reason to complain. Maybe Michelle didn’t like any of the dresses the black designers made?? Maybe the designers she picked are more her style. This crazy, be proud that history has been made and now know that the “white” man is not holding anyone back if you want it bad enough and you work hard for it!
I mean hell that damn “My President is Black” is about the dumbest song that someone could have made. What does Obama has to do with a Lambos, Rims and Bricks???
I agree with pretty much everyone on the board..FIRST of all she kept her black hairstylist secondly the clothes Michelle has worn most of her life are by white designers from what Walmart has in the aisles to Donna Karan..we as a people need to get over the pettiness..the fact that she goes against the grain for her choices is enough for me..for those upset step your game up..it’s just that simple..because there were a TON of white ones she didn’t pick either..it’s really about what she likes..some of us act like there was some hidden agenda and that’s just plain ignorant
The black designers should make her style of clothes and MAYBE she would have picked one. We all were what we like and I am sure she did the same.
I personally would not have picked what she wore but she always dresses crazy to me so I was not surprised by what she wore.
Moving on.
 Oh LORD how ignorant
I’m about supporting black business, but let’s be real.I support good, well businesses and they proved that they don’t have good business sense with putting this BS out. It’s competition, don’t blame the messenger!

Lord – anything to complain. This woman has four years to “showcase us” or whatever. Give me a break – it’s not written that she has to wear only African American designer’s dresses.
And the person who is complaining is not even a designer!
I swear, black folks aint never satisfied!!!
She has a right to choose whomever she wanted. It’s my understanding she’s sticking with those who have already provided fashions for her in the past.
Y’all need to back up off the first lady. With the exception of the wide strap (should have been strapless), she looked wonderful!
Most of the fashion pundits praised Mrs. O for her wardrobe choices during the inauguration. Most of the criticism came from regulars ‘Joes’ and ‘Janes.’
As others have written, folks have too much damn time on their hands. Just because she chose these two designers doesn’t mean she won’t work with black designers in the future. Michelle is set to be the first lady for the next four years and will have many more opportunities at various state dinners and functions to wear designer duds. Folks just need to calm the fcuk down.
Why do black folks think that WE are the only underrepresented group that is due an opportunity? Hell, there are other minorities in this country who have it just as hard and are as marginalized as black folks. Black folks don’t own the patent on being discriminated against.
This particular dress was not by any Cuban-American. It’s by a friend of ours Jason Wu who is Chinese Canadian. Born in Taipei, raised in Vancouver.
It was not “our” moment. It was America’s moment. It was history. I can understand the argument, but then its like damn, save this argument for two, three years down the road when she doesn’t wear any black designers. Give the woman a chance. Maybe she should have just worn Oscar de la Renta like most of the other first ladies and just put it on tradition.
But there will be plenty of opportunity for all designers, so they should make their interest known to the powers that be and go through the proper channels. Don’t go looking for a hook up and acting all familiar like she owes “us” something because we check the same race box. This is the First Lady, let’s respect that!
