Hi Sandra, Love love love the website. Honestly I find it saddening when black women do things like this. (*cough* Beyonce) I myself am a black woman and I feel like I have reverse self hate issues. I WISH I was DARKER, I would say my complexion is around the real complexion of Necole Bitchie posted on your website, but its something about a dark skin I find beautiful and regal.
Unfortunately my family is full of different nationalities (but I represent for my black people) I’d prefer to be darker and I sometimes where foundation darker than my real complexion on purpose. I’ve come to the realization that some black woman especially industry ones get pulled into the light is right syndrome. The lighter they are the more beautiful they feel, black women aren’t represented properly in the entertainment industry, when I see my people I see beauty in full lips, and various nose shapes and various colors, I find nothing beautiful about pasty white skin, (no offense to those with no pigment) I just thought I’d share my thoughts.

Thanks for opening the comments Miss Sandra. There is nothing bad to say here. Necole’s Derek Blanks photo is absolutly gorgeous. Somehow I doubt she said, “Dereck please make me appear lighter. I just hate my skin color.” I think it’s lighting. I want to learn how to do my smokie eye like that. I’ll be studying the heck out of her pick as I try to mimick it.

I have said it before and I will say it again all black is beautiful. I know for myself I am lighter in the winter that I am in the summer.
Sandra needs to do a Derek Blanks shoot so we can see what she looks like since she always has so much to say about other peoples looks.

Every shade is beautiful from the very light to the very dark-that’s what makes our race so unique and exotic.
I am dark-skinned and I embrace my shade because although I was teased by others while growing up-I was raised in a family that nurtured individualism and high self-esteem.
My grandmother would always say the darker the berry the sweeter the juice-lol, silly but it worked you couldn’t tell me my dark skin wasn’t beautiful & I didn’t tell anyone even if they disagreed.
Typically, God made you the way he wanted you to be and why mess with perfection? God doesn’t make any mistakes.
I have seven siblings and we all range in complexion from high yellow to ebony brown, there are some with hazel green eyes, brown eyes, curly hair & not so curly-and it is what it is…
embrace who you are and whoever in the hell don’t like it tell them to kiss your azz and go straight to hell, that works for me either they think I’m crazy and leave me alone or they realize I don’t give a damn about what they think-and trust me I truly don’t!
Think about it Auntie. All the celebs in Atlanta have a DBlanks shoot. Where is yours? Don’t get left behind!

Sandra, I couldn’t get to Nicole’s site from work to actually see the pics but i will say this. You are GANGSTA! I think it’s a shame when the industry lighten photos to make models appear “prettier”.
I don’t know if I buy the whole lighting thing… although it definitely plays a part to a certain degree but it won’t lighten you 10 shades.
On the other hand, whether she approved this or not, i can’t judge her and say that she hate herself. I was just thinking about purchasing some Ambi products last week to work on my skin – knowing that evening out the skin tone as they call it or “lightening” … would be one of the “benefits”.
We all have something about ourselves that we would like to tweak here and there but I don’t know about calling her out when you won’t even put yourself out there. I think you don’t want to do it for fear of criticism. One could argue that… self love is the understanding that regardless of what people say, you look how you look… and you look perfect to God and those that love you.

Meh…I think she looks good. She is undoubtedly lighter, but I really think lighting and the kind of makeup used played a factor. And I am glad I wasn’t the only one irked by this:

What do you mean by nationalities per se? A nationality pertains to the nation one comes from, not the race. That would be ethnicity.
Derek blanks does that in all his photographs big flashes lots of light and lightning it doesnt mean that they are trying to lighten themselves or have self hate issues…………………….
i’ll say it’s the lighting or makeup. her neck and face is lighter than her arm on the picture to the left…which is the same color as the picture to the right.
its all lighting and make up… when you go take professional pics and your are of African descent, they even out your skin tone and they take the shine or oils out of your skin so you wont look shiny. when you add lighting, you appear lighter, its not your fought, because nobody wants to pay for dark pictures that you can’t see. a pic taken by your cousin shay shay in your bathroom isnt considered professional and one you wouldnt want to publish on a web site..

And the sad part about all this, is that there really are people that hate their skin tone and wish to be lighter. They wake up in the mirror every day wishing they were just a little lighter, a little smaller, a little taller and what do they do…they take it out on other people.
Love yourself in 2009. Be thankful for what God gave you and also thankful for things that you may not have for that is what makes you unique and who you are.
Trust me, my skin tone is the least of my worries but I’ve learned to accept my circumstances and that has made me a better me.

Its the camera, the lights and the makeup. Im not that dark but when I take pictues I am always 3 shades lighter and no matter how many times I go to MAC there is nothing that works, I can never be the same color in any of my pictures..unless I pile on the bronzer then I just look like a shiny penny

Umm Sandra as a photographer you should know that when taking a picture in a club you will appear darker due to lightening. as well depending on the season. I appear lighter in the winter due to the harsh cold and less sun and darker in the summer due to more sun exposure. Also makeup shades are a factor. Some people just need to learn to mind their own bidness!! Everyone seems so darn insecure. Who has a big , small, long , round booty. Or has a fake more or fake nose. If you wanna be darker, lighter, fatter, smaller whatever do as you please and others mind your own stuff cause we all have our own issues!!!

If anybody is interesting in photography/photoshopping or anything knows that the light can change your reflection also.It’s not even that serious.
her mouth is not that cute she looks better when she smiles. I think it has to do with the lightening. I think that when you do professionals shoots the lights make a big difference, even with me i take better pictures with the correct light.

I love ambi it has really even my complexion i am darker in some spots on my face, and I hated it, but I tried ambi because my mom swears by it , and I like what it has done for my skin.
Sandra you are a professional photographer you know how the game works. Photographers touch-up photos how they see fit.
I took my 2 yr old to take Christmas photos and the lady thought the picture would like more vibrant if she “lighten” the picture, which also lighten my baby’s complexion. I like my baby’s true caramel complexion better.

I think Necoles pics came out super cute. No disrepect to you Sandra, but you do seem like you may have the color issue…and I’m saying this because you only seem to think darkskinned women (minus Rihanna) are beautiful or do not criticize them when they are being a H.A.M. i.e. (them lil girls performing their version of cater to you) yet when it’s someone who is light skinned or with long hair you criticize them. Would you like to be a little lighter or have longer hair? I mean I’m not trying to be funny but it’s not uncommon…like someone said above a lot of people would like to tweak something about themselves.

as alot of others have said it’s the lighting that was used to make her lighter. i doubt that she requested to be lighter and i’m sure it wasn’t derek’s or anyone else’s intention to make her that way .
Everyone knows it’s Sandra with the self hate issues. She obsesses over skin color to no end. And anybody who’s ever had professional photo shoots KNOWS that the photographers own lighting often makes you look shades lighter unintentionally. It’s happened to me on MANY occasions. Duhhhh, pictures can’t be taken without a FLASH of WHITE LIGHT that no doubt makes EVERYONE look lighter, even when you’re already semi-light complexioned. I’ve never seen a blogger act like such a cheerleader for darker skin and feel the need to point out every time a (as she outs it) “LSLH” sister is on somebody’s arm or in somebody’s video.

i think it is the club lighting that made her darker not the DB pic that made her lighter and as a former makeup artist trust me if they used MAC studio foundation that makes a damn tar baby light-skinned LOL!!! anyhoo she is a beautiful black woman as we all are some more than others

Can anyone share how much a Derek Blanks photoshoot costs? For the longest I have been wanting an artsy photo of me and my babies. I have my eye on a photographer in Charlotte who is darn good, but still has nothing on Derek.
@Bird start saving ladies lol, he aint cheap lol. Starting at over 1,000 a pop!Look at his work though it speaks for itself! Invest in yourself is what I say lol.
Self hate is self hate. Whether you wish your skin was darker or lighter, not liking what God blessed you with is a PROBLEM! Calling it reverse self hate and slamming the next woman, is no better. You both need help. Black is beautiful, regardless of what shade it is.
