Police: Adair Freeman Died For His Fake Diamond Chain

Police have released surveillance video images of a white pick up truck seen leaving the scene of a fatal shooting early Saturday morning.

19-year-old Adair Freeman was shot to death outside his father’s recording studio on Jan. 24 at 1:50 a.m. as he returned to the studio from a Shell gas station at 14th and Spring streets.

Surveillance video shows a white late model Chevrolet pickup truck with a black bed liner pull past the pumps at the Shell station and park in the shadows near a chain link fence separating the property from the adjoining Hot Beats studio where Freeman worked with his father, Russell Freeman. (Watch video)

Police believe two men inside the pickup truck targeted Freeman while he was inside the convenience store and waited for him to walk by.

What got their attention was the fake diamond chain dangling around Freeman’s neck. Surveillance video from inside the convenience store shows Freeman totally iced out with fake bling on his neck, wrists and fingers.

This type of jewelry called “Hip Hop ice” was popularized by rappers in music videos and is favored by so-called “ballers” in the Hip-Hop community who use the flashy baubles to entice thirsty females.

The trouble is the jewelry also entices thieves who are too dumb to know the difference between authentic diamond jewelry and the fake stuff these kids wear.

Police say the truck’s driver exited the vehicle and robbed Freeman of his chain, shooting him twice in the chest. The driver then got back into the truck on the passenger side. Someone else drove the truck away from the crime scene.

The iced out chain the thieves stole was probably worth $50 tops. The teenager died with $90 still in his jeans pocket.

Sandra did the police say his ice was fake and worth only $50? By the way are you going to report on the story that Rocko plead guilty to hitting that woman in the face last year and Monica denied it…………..The truth always comes out.

@ Daisy, that’s right. Regardless of whether the chain was real or not, it’s just senseless to kill someone over jewelry. Do something with your life so you can get your own. This is really sad.

Sad to say but I don’t like my kids wearing “Jordans”.

” Police believe two men inside the pickup truck targeted Freeman while he was inside the convenience store and waited for him to walk by”
Did they not have alittle common sense to see a young kid walking and not driving that maybe the chain was fake. We always want to know the reason why someone was killed, even after finding out we just get more upset at the stupidy and senselessness.

Terrible, terrible story. Sandra, you do a great job mixing in stories like this that go uncovered or under-covered (this story, the personal trainer, Oscar Grant, etc..)

I know that intersection well, and I notice that the yellow hummer in seen in the surveillance pics is ALWAYS parked at that gas station. That is such a wide-open, away from the hood corner, it makes you wary to go anywhere out here.

There is really a recession, and people are stooping to lowest common denominator in terms of what they will do to ANYONE.

    Stay aware y’all.

    brenden says:

He didn’t die because of his alleged fake chain, he died because of some fake ass thugs. Why blame the victim? I saw a video of 2 young dudes beating up an old woman and taking her purse. She was iced out as well. Pearls for days…A look popularized by the golden girls. I guess we can blame Sophia Patrillo for that attack. I should be able to walk around in what ever I want to walk around in without fear as long as it’s legal. If a woman who’s dressed provocatively gets groped by strangers is it her fault? Please believe they’d still grope her ass if she were in sweats.

Its a shame that you can’t have anything without your own (black) people trying to kill you for it. They even try to steal your joy at times. I hate that we are so materialistic. You rarely hear of any other race stealing and killing over chains and sneakers. It seems that some people think that those objects are more valuable than life. I wish people would steal a book and try to improve/build themselves inwardly rather than stealing other people’s worldly possessions.

Read the Blog: Yes…The video link included in the blog story is from the local news – the reporter asked the officer if Adair died over the ‘fake diamond’ necklace and the officer replied ‘yes, unfortunately he did.’

    @Amulet,
It’s a shame you can’t have nice things without ANYONE trying to kill you for it. Blacks aren’t the only ones knocking people over the head or doing stupid acts of violence for money and merchandise.

    per the article,

Damn, where have I been? They’re naming fake ice now? Don’t rock, pop, and heck even actors wear fake bling too? Is Bey’s fake wedding ring called the Beyonce or Sasha? Is Oprah or Jamie’s fake earrings called the O’s or the Foxx’s?
