Barack Obama Signs Kid’s Health Bill

Last night Barack Obama signed a bill extending health care to children from lower and middle income families that make too much for Medicaid but can’t afford health insurance.

According to conservatives and right wing bloggers, the extension for the S-CHIP bill will be paid for by taxing the hail out of lower income cigarette smokers to the tune of $1.01 tacked on to the cost of the pack.

They argue that the resulting tax increase would affect the working poor the hardest since there are more poor smokers than wealthy smokers. And they say this bill contradicts Obama’s campaign promise not to raise taxes on the poor.

Personally, I think O did the right thing in signing that bill. I grew up in London where health care was 100% free for everyone.

No child should witness her parents worrying about paying medical bills. America is still far behind other countries in terms of free access to health care for the people who need it the most.

This extension is a good first step toward making free health care a reality.

Good job. Nobody is forcing these people to smoke anyway. I mean, personally, who cares if they’re poor smokers. If they know that they’re poor why would they spend so much of their hard earned money on cigarettes anyway; when we know what it all leads to eventually. Give that money to the kids.

Aw, cool. The comments are on.

I think President Obama is on his way to doing big things. Our President want to computerize all health records within five years hoping to improve the quality of care and ultimately lowering healthcare costs.

Also, according to the Courier Post online, the kids’ plan will come from a $.61 increase in tobacco tax not $1.01. Either way, I think it’s a wonderful plan because there are a LOT of children that are not receiving the proper healthcare due to parents not able to afford coverage. For those who are complaining about the increase in tobacco sales, quit smoking. It’s not healthy for you!!!

I don’t agree with the belief that thisis a tax on the poor or a broken campaign promise. If it hurts your pockets to buy cigarettes than you should stop smoking. It is an option.
