Jamaica Bans Hip Hop, Dancehall Music From Airwaves

Jamaica has taken a step in the right direction toward reclaiming our youth from the destructive influence of Hip Hop and dancehall music.
The Jamaican Broadcasting Commission has banned all sexually explicit music, and music that depicts violence, from the country’s airwaves.
That just about covers 95% of the Hip Hop tracks currently being played on the radio here in the U.S.
Gee, you think such a ban will force record labels, producers and rap artists to be more creative?
We hope that American radio programmers also grow some balls and decide to stop playing this garbage on the air.
The ban went into effect on Feb. 6. It covers all songs meant to promote the act of “daggering,” a dance move that simulates sexual intercourse.
The ban includes music played on both radio and television. DJs have no leeway in the ban because the songs can’t be played even if the lewd lyrics are bleeped. [LINK]

I say F**K Jamaica
Dem some big ole gurls!
Ain’t nothing wrong with Jamaica banning the music. With the rate that crime and rape is over there Im glad they finally did something positive. No saying that music caused it but I’m sure if has an impact on some of it
i wonder if the “garbage” you reference includes your good friend “Rubberband Man” TI??

Stop blaming others and take responsibility for ur own actions. I swear i get tired of people blaming hip hop for this or that. STFU and STFD.
I bet they still allow the violent anti-gay messages to be broadcast in these songs
see in USA its a thing called freedom….if they dont like something surely its something else on the dial for them… country rock talk sports jazz oldies… choice is a beatiful thing
Putting a ban on what folks listen to isn’t going to solve the world’s problems.
Next.

^^ i couldn’t agree more
Most of yall #1 being excluded has pretty much said what I would’ve said on this issue so I’m not even going to go into it. This hip hop is the reason for….. excuse is some played out azz nonsense. I put it in the same category as “the white man” is the reason for…. these days. MFs throw hip hop under the bus for everything under the son.
@1 Seems like you have an issue with Miami rappers, you pretty much named all of them. If you’re naming garbage rappers though you need to look more than just in the South. There are more garbage rappers out now than decent ones.
This is a great step for Jamaica, I agree I wish more people would actually stand for something and refuse to play this garbage in the US.
Whether we want to agree or not, what you listen to becomes a part of your fabric; if its garbage in, only garbage can come out. So if Jamaica says that they no longer want their children being overly exposed to hyper sexualized music, that makes it seem okay for their young men and women to be whorish, then I say KUDOS.
@KaraZ,
I listened to NWA, Ice T, Ghetto Boyz, Too Live Crew, watched Boyz N Da Hood, Colors, Menace II Society, King of New York….you get my drift…as most of us on her probably did so I would differ on it having a negative effect on me because my PARENTS were the ones who laid down the laws and who I listened to not a movie I was watching or a song I heard.
How many rock, pop, alternative, techno, metal songs in the world say the same sexual, violent, aggresive things that hip hop says but constantly get excused or overlook? It’s why I had/have a problem liking Eminem. When Blacks rapped saying the same chit he did it was burn the CDs call Congress to intervene, etc. but when he did it the MF was a genius and winning grammy’s and selling like Elvis. He’s talented but damn, yall know if he was black he’d just be called just another menace to society.
^^ well said shauny.
Karaz I have to agree with you 100% but I also see shauny’s point as well. I came form the PJ’s listened to a lot of the music that would probably be banned and I came out alright. This was due to my parents or more specifically my father.
However most children in African American or minority households do not have two parents and even if they do they are always working to make a better life for their children. So in effect music, musics videos, video games and movies are what’s raising the kids. If this negative music (which would include the rock music telling kids to slit their wrists) is banned and replaced with productive positive music it could have a positive impact on the behavior/attitude to the children who are parenting themselves. That’s just my two cents anyway.
Shauny I agree, it’s not just hip hop that’s producing garbage and all forms of crap should be removed or at the very least limited, no matter the genre.
You can compare what you listened to growing up and say you turned out just fine, but you have to admit that these are different times. I’m assuming you’re in your late twenties like I am and grew up in the mid-late 90’s like I did. Yes we had some garbage out then too, but dare I say that wasn’t all that was being produced then and that allowed for a modicum of balance in entertainment. If you listened to your radio circa 1995 for one hour and listened to your radio for one hour now, I’m sure you can admit that the music, lyrics, messages and accompanying images have degenerated and become unimaginative and downright vulgar.
Whereas in 1999, innuendo was used and girls in booty shorts in videos were considered pushing the envelope, now just 10 years later, music videos and the songs are more graphic than some soft core porn. I remember being in high school and oral sex was a big deal and outside of lil’ kim alluding to it and the odd rapper here and there mentioning it, we weren’t exposed to it, now turn on 106&Park and see how many times the act is referenced or simulated.
I also agree that ultimately it’s parents that have to parent (action verb) their children and raise (another action verb) them; however parents need as much help as they can get. If you’re a parent, I’m sure you know how impossible it is to raise your child in the bubble that you try to create, because as soon as they’re out of your sight you really have no control over what they’re exposed to.
I don’t know why I just wrote this thesis, but i’m sick of the indecency assaulting me over the airwaves, and to think that children are being fed a steady diet of the crap annoys me.
I guess its never too late. I think its a step in the right direction, that may actually boost album sales. I grew up during the time all you heard was Run DMC, Jazzy Jeff and The Fresh Prince and LL Cool J during the day time and it was song a piece not a billion a day. Everything else came on after 9pm on Friday and I lived in Philly.
We need to get back to decency and discretion. And parents need to teach their children, that’s the main problem. Yeah I knew the words to 2
Live Crew but I never repeated them outside of my room.
As much Punnany they talk about in their songs. They need to ban their own sh!t
Also @ LovelyLady. Yeah you should have said that when all these spelman tricks trying to protest Nelly and Tip Drill. and all these chicks that have a problem with rappers portaying women as a penis repository they all need to STFD and STFU. If the girls wanna do it for the videos then let them do it. Its nothin
whata gwan me no agree wit dis f*@$kery jamaican dancehall still gwan play in de clubs and de street it is no worse than that batty boi hip hop LOL!! anyhoo i still love some mr. vegas and beenie i guess it is a start but can the US ban stations playing the same damn song 4 times every hour PLEASE
