Photos of the Day

Yesterday, First Lady Michelle Obama visited the children at Mary’s Center, a Washington D.C. community center. This was Michelle’s first solo excursion to the hood since moving into the White House with her husband and kids. What else is she going to do with her time with no job to speak of? During one touching moment, this 5-year-old asked Mrs. Obama, if she and Barack lived in the same house. Mrs. Obama assured the child that they did indeed live together in the same house. It’s interesting to note that most of the kids at the community center come from broken homes.

Brazil is getting ready for it’s annual Carnaval festival with 12,000 freshly painted Barack Obama masks. Would you say the skin color is a little off on these masks? Brazil’s Carnaval festival runs from Feb. 20 to Feb. 22.

T.I. Regrets Taking Chris Brown’s Side

As you know, T.I. spoke on the Rihanna/Chris Brown situation during an interview on Carson Daly’s show Monday night.

T.I. stated that after hearing about the unfortunate incident between pop and R&B’s power couple, he reached out — not to his good friend Rihanna — but to his home boy Chris, whom T.I. said was “a little concerned.”

“I spoke to him today,” Tip told Daly. “He’s cool, you know. He’s a little concerned about the situation, but he’s still the same Chris.”

T.I. continued, “I told him, ‘This too shall pass.’ We’re celebrities, we’re entertainers, but we’re still human — all of us,”

It did strike some as odd that T.I. seemed to be casually brushing aside the serious domestic violence charges against Brown.

Of course, those who know T.I. knew that he wasn’t making light of the situation. But T.I.’s label, Atlantic Records, moved quickly to minimize the damage anyway by releasing a label-approved, politically correct statement to MTV yesterday.

After careful consideration I realized I made the mistake of commenting before understanding the situation. I myself am no stranger to media scrutiny. My only intention was to support both Rihanna and Chris during these times. My heart goes out to both of them.

If anything, T.I. taking sides with Chris Brown should quiet the rumors that T.I. and Rihanna were ever kicking it.

In other Chris Brown news, his stepfather — the one he wanted to kill for abusing his mom — told Access Hollywood that he wasn’t surprised at the charges against Brown.

“[Chris] has to take responsibility for his own actions,” Hawkins told Access Hollywood. When asked about the allegations that he abused Chris’ mom, Hawkins responded, “I never raised a hand at his mom. We (Brown’s mother and I) argued frequently… As far as physical abuse there was no physical abuse.” [LINK]

The train almost won.

Video: Woman Prays To Obama, Gets a House

Henrietta Hughes and her son lived in their pick up truck for “over a year” until that fateful day (yesterday) when she attended a Barack Obama town hall meeting — in the front row no less.

Henrietta took the mic to tell Barack how homeless she was and to make a plaintive plea for a home, and a car.

Now Henrietta and her son are homeless no more. Henrietta and her son have a $150,000 home rent free — thanks to the generosity of an Obama supporter, who just happened to have a $150,000 house laying around!

There is simply no truth to the rumors that Henrietta was a plant and that this was all pre-arranged for the media.

And even if it was pre-arranged, don’t all politicians (and fake faith healers) have plants in the crowd?

No More Milk For Chris Brown; Radio Station PD Pulls His Music

When it rains, it pours — milk, that is. The good folks over at Goodby Silverstein & Partners, the ad agency responsible for the “Got Milk” ad campaign, have seen fit to snatch another endorsement from woman beater Chris Brown.

This makes the second major endorsement lost by the “Run IT” singer since news broke that he punched, kicked and bit singer Rihanna into submission and put her in the hospital.

And if that’s not bad enough, a Cleveland radio station PD pulled all of Chris Brown’s music from it’s play List. Java Joel, evening personality for Cleveland’s Hit Music Channel 96.5 KISS FM, took calls from angry listeners demanding to know why the station was continuing to play Brown’s music.

Program Director Bo Matthews of KISS FM said:

“His listeners have strong feelings about these unfortunate events, and he made the decision to take the Chris Brown songs OFF the radio while he is on the air. I then made the decision to rid the whole station of Chris Brown songs while this plays out. We are fans of Chris Brown’s music, and this is not something that will last forever. But it appears that Chris has made some poor choices, we are following the lead of our listeners, and we will not be supporting Chris Brown on 96.5 Kiss FM in Cleveland until the alleged situation gets resolved.” [LINK}

It’s great to know that some black men somewhere still have respect for black women!

Senate Approves Wasteful Spending Bill, Dow Jones Tumbles Below 7900

One day after Barack Obama’s boring press conference to push his wasteful $838 billion stimulus bill, the Senate approved the package 61-37.

Meanwhile, skepticism on the part of investors sent the Dow Jones Industrial Average tumbling below 7900 today. And that’s not even the half of it.

The reality is this bill won’t even begin to benefit families until 2011-2012.

According to the Washington Post:

The Obama administration’s economic stimulus plan could end up wasting billions of dollars by attempting to spend money faster than an overburdened government acquisition system can manage and oversee it, according to documents and interviews with contracting specialists.

But there is some good news. Look for Michelle Obama to grace the cover of the March issue of Vogue magazine on newsstands Feb. 17.

Barack Obama Pisses Off Black Reporters

It isn’t easy to make black reporters mad, especially when you’re the first half-white man to be elected president and these same reporters were instrumental in getting you there. But Barack Obama managed to piss them off anyway… naturally.

After the first black president completed his first prime-time press conference, the black press was red hot.
“We were window dressing,” said Hazel Edney, a reporter with the National Newspaper Publishers Association, also known as the Black Press of America. “We were nothing more than window dressing.”

As the media filed into the stately White House East Room on Monday night, the reporter was shocked to find herself in the front row. Alongside her were the top news agencies, Associated Press, Reuters; also up front, 86-year-old Helen Thomas, who started covering presidents 50 years ago.

Alongside the most prominent journalists in America was Tiffany Cross from Black Entertainment Television. Like Miss Edney, she didn’t know why she was in first-class while all the television networks – every single one – was exiled to the steerage compartment.

“I really don’t know why I’m up here,” Miss Cross said with a shy smile.

While most on the front row got to pose a question to President Obama, the two reporters from the black press did not. Nor did any other black-press reporter, for that matter.

“This was like Reagan, when he’d put all the blacks up front,” said another prominent but visibly peeved black-press reporter who asked to remain anonymous. “He ought’a be ashamed.” [LINK]
