Oprah ‘disappointed’ in inappropriate behavior at school
Oprah Winfrey released a statement through her reps today expressing her disappointment in the allegations of inappropriate behavior between students at a girls school she built in South Africa.

After reports indicated that several students were expelled from Oprah Winfrey’s school in South Africa, The Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy, for inappropriate behavior, the daytime diva is speaking out in a statement obtained by Entertainment Tonight.
In a statement, Oprah expresses her regret that as many as seven girls allegedly sexually harassed other students. A spokesperson for the school says students were told to leave for violating the code of conduct, but said it was “a confidential school matter.”
“I’m disappointed that several of our students chose to disregard the school’s rules. It’s disheartening when any student has to be suspended or expelled and it’s a process that involves serious review and consideration,” Oprah says in the statement. “We insist on maintaining a campus environment that commands mutual respect, fosters academic excellence and encourages learners to fulfill their best potential.”
She continues, “Indiscretions resulting in disciplinary action are common in schools all over the world. Unfortunately, because of my name these common infractions place the Academy in the media spotlight.”

Disregard for school rules? Uhm, the bigger issue is the lack of humanity in investigating and dealing with the FIRST ISSUE. Something happened and the psychological effects were not dealt with properly. The victims and their families were coersed to keep quiet, and this is what happens. They unlease their misery on someone else. This is how/why molestation and rape continue to happen. Adults don’t want to take responsibility when they have created, even unknowingly, the circumstances for such things to take place. It’s her school, she’s a victim of rape, she should knows how deep the effects of these things can run.

Hasnt there been ‘issues’ with Oprahs school since she openened it?? and I agree.. what about the schools/children here, could they not benefit from Oprah’s generosity??? obviously not-oh well
She built the school specifically because the girls in that area didn’t have access to safe schools or no schools at all. You have to expect some problems when you are dealing with children who have had to deal with rape and poverty and so many other issues. They are not going to be perfect. I wish there was some other solution than expelling the offenders and denying them an education. They obviously need help. I guess people thought this was going to be a totally dreamy situation.
Man, the girls were involved in teenange sexual experimentation. Lesbianism if you will. No harm, no foul.
I did not exp. with girls and I don’t think they approve of that in S Africa.
It is a harm and a foul if it was done against another students will.
On the other hand your dealing with teenagers there will always be a handful of students that don’t follow the rules and they should be dealt with accordingly. If they can’t follow the rules kick them out and let’s move on with the lesson at hand today.

When she asked American school age kids what they wanted they said “sneakers or Ipods”. The girls in Africa wanted an education.

For real, considering all the ends we’ve got at our disposal, we don’t actually need Oprah’s money to have a good education.
We just need better parents who are willing to act a fool to get our kids a good education, not just when our kids act badly. You can give your kids an Xbox, but their school looks worse than the 1930s shacks where Black kids used to be educated during segregation. Hell, then the shacks were dry, the teachers were educated, and the kids knew better than to act a fool.
Forget Oprah, these kids need parenting.
I’m sick of Black folks looking for a handout from rich Black folks. I never ask for a handout, only for folks to stay out of my way when I’m getting mine.
If you didn’t do the work for the money, then you need to sit yo @ss down! Oprah’s money ain’t your money. You ain’t getting up at 5am to do shows, or reading those boring @ss books to stay informed. You ain’t practicing for hours to dribble that ball, or working hard to learn stolen dance moves for your latest video, or funking Jermain Dupri for tracks.
So shaddddup!
