Marquis Cooper’s Wife Speaks Out
The Oakland Raiders star Victor “Marquis” Cooper remains missing at sea hours after the U.S. Coast Guard plucked one of his friends out of the ocean Monday afternoon.
Cooper owned the 21-foot boat that set sail from Clearwater Pass at 6:30 a.m. Saturday morning with Cooper, Lions star Corey Smith, Nick Schuyler and Will Bleakley on board.
When the men failed to return Saturday night, Cooper’s wife Rebekah called a friend who alerted the Coast Guard.
Cooper and his wife Rebekah have a three-year-old daughter and have been married three years. But people are talking about how calm, relaxed and downright cheerful she was when speaking with the news media outside their home in Odessa, Florida yesterday. Watch video
Rebekah seemed to be fighting back a smile when she said:
“It feels like my greatest fear coming true. Marquis is extremely laid back, sometimes to a weakness, but fishing is his first love. It always has been.
“There’s nowhere else I would feel more confident than (with) him on a boat, and I have a lot of faith in him out there, regardless of what they may be facing.
“I know that he can pull through it.
“I knew something was wrong when it was kind of getting past the normal time when I get the phone call, ‘Babe, we’re back on shore,’ .Marquis has been diligent about making those phone calls and that didn’t happen (Saturday). That was my first red flag.
“They have a waiting period for a vessel due in and they were very, very helpful in overriding their criteria to get somebody out there sooner because of the weather that was coming and everything. Those guys at the Coast Guard have done everything they can do.
“It’s my worst nightmare to think of anyone I love, especially my husband, in any situation where he is struggling to get back or can’t get in touch with us or get the help he needs”.

I saw his wife’s interview and, i have to say, i was taken aback. i know people handle stress in different ways, but she didn’t seem grief stricken at all. she was saying all the right things but grinning the whole time.
i wonder if she is on meds to calm down?

I think her reaction is a combination of nerves and hoping for the best. But, the bottom line is… You’re damned if you do, damned if you don’t! If she was crying, hysterically, she would be criticized for giving up on him and thinking the worst. So, Becky can’t win….

This woman seems to be talking too much in my opinion. There is no need for her to make a statement at all. Shouldn’t she be off somewhere in extreme remorse at the thought of her man drowning after hours clinging to an overturned boat?
And what they heck were they doing on the open seas in that little behind boat anyway? It looked like something you should be weary about taking out on a lake let alone the Gulf of Mexico. At least the small size of the boat took the evil thoughts of a down low party from my mind.
You know Sandy, I was thinking the same way when I saw a snippet of what she had to sat on GMA this morning.
In all, I just hope the other 3 will reappear.

IMO her and the only dude they found will end up married in a few years. His mom released a statement saying her son said he hung on because he didnt want his mom going to his funeral. WHAT ABOUT THE OTHER THREE? I’m sure they felt the same way. Why would they let go? And their all strong MEN.

Maybe they weren’t happy and she’s just relieved she didn’t have to kill him herself. Now she doesn’t have to go through all that trouble of getting a hit man and pretending to cry in front of the police and media.

OKay I just watched the clip on CNN.com and the smiling was ridiculous. I really hope she was medicated or on something. She looks like she was talking about a missing dog or something.
When I read the story something just sounded fishy about the entire thing. Yesterday before the Schyler guy was found, it seemed as though only his family was waiting for him dockside (at least they’re the only ones pictured there by large media agency AP/CNN) and then he’s the only one found?

Okay, I’m tripping. Dude is so cute and the wife is not what I expect. I hope that they are found. I did wonder why the white boy was the only one found. Who else thinks he was in on it????

Sandra, can you please do an update on this story. Now the “survivor” is saying that the two football players gave up, took off their life jackets and decided to float away into the sea and the other friend swam away. This ish just don’t sound right.
