The show was supposed to be all about honoring Michael, and they didn't want the issues with Chris to affect that. As far as Jay-Z having Chris cut from the show, Jamie's exact words were "Jay-Z and Beyonce don't run the show." - A lot of things during the show were switched around at the very last minute. Stephen Hill made the call for Beyonce not to open the show with "I'll Be There," but instead to do "Ave Marie." They wanted to open the show with something uplifting, so they went with New Edition.
