The BET Awards from a reader’s perspective
If you are waiting for me to post my summary of the BET Awards that aired last night, you should know that I only watch awards shows on rare occasions. Last night was not one of those rare occasions.
For me, awards shows jumped the shark a long time ago. I can’t bare to watch the buffoonery any more. There was a time when awards shows were actually entertaining. But this was when the music industry was still a profession instead of a sideshow, and stars were actually people with talent.
Anyway, loyal reader Krysi J has a brief summary of last night’s events. I hope this helps if you missed the show last night:
Krysi J Says: We gon start it off wit Jamie [Foxx]…
he was a damn jerk the whole time and I LOVED IT.. Especially when he tried to put that big man booty in those tight Mike outfits…LOL! The jokes were pretty good too, and tasteful.
Keri [Hilson] did her thing before the end where she almost messed up… But I can’t take away from her for the running out of breathe struggle cuz shyt almost errbody struggled tonight except for B….. which leads me my next performance summary…
I’d like to start by first saying…. what the hell was B talking/singing about….and WHY?

What the hell was Jay Z talking about and Why??… That song is so fukking wack azz hell…. I’m sorry to those of you who are fans, but I’m just saying like who the hell told him dat shyt was worth putting on record? “na na na na, na na na na hey,hey, hey, goodbye” Please tell me why…. followed by please retire dude…. seriously.
AND……Ciara…… why can’t you sing IN TUNE sitting down doing nothing….thats not a good look boo.

The O’Jays….WOW @ Mr. Levert slipping on live television and saying “shyt”…LOL!
SMH at BET accidentally slipping up and letting Wayne say “he got dat dope DYCK”… LOL!
[Rapper] Drake, may in fact be gay….. It was a lil too much “how you doin” happening on that bar stool… sorry.
Loved Keith Sweat, Guy, and BBD performance with Neyo…. All they needed was Ready For the World.

Im kinda mad at Chris for not taking the opportunity to be a part of the tribute in any way what so ever. Damn dog you could’ve presented an award or something and Daisy you are right… it seem like Jamie performed the entire time where the hell was Usher, and the other dancers? How the hell you dig up Ciara for a solo, but won’t even let Latoya Luckett perform?? Hell naw, Matthew you wrong for dat shyt.
And was Ving Rhames drunk…. How the hell he let T-pain act like he had some sense never mind that big DUMB azz chain that he is no doubt able to afford, but again I ask WHY? It was aiight, I can’t lie I expected a bigger Tribute, but I guess thats just me… Maybe they will create an entired Tribute special for us to watch… That would make everything alright.

They pulled CB from the show at the last minute. Tiny and Toya letting their BABIES dance all up on Drake while performing Every Girl. They did MJ WRONG!! COONERY AT ITS BEST!!

Jay Z was great. I guess he was letting his hair grow durning the making of his album which I’m sure is going to be fiyah. Thanks for bringing real rap back Jigga man.
Beyonce. I was so disappointed in your show. I usually love to see her live but that was not one of the times. She looked a mess. Her hair was dry and nappy looking around the edges. She was dressed like she was about to do Like a virgin 09 version. Those songs should’ve been done at the Grammy’s not the BET awards. Boring!
& when she won her award. Jay was so happy for her. “Baby you won.” That hooker just looked right past him. Almost like she couldn’t accept his gesture. & can she ever say I want to thank my Husband. Ig.
Soulja boy. Even though I’m not a fan & that song isn’t saying anything. He did his thing. He had that crowd on its feet.
C-error give it up.
Neyo was fabulous. 2 bad he has to be apart of the music industry when its at its worst. The O’jays showed those youngin’s how it suppose to be done. They are part of an error when talent mattered. Which is why singers like them stand the test of time. I can’t see half those people who hit the stage tonight having 50 years under their belt one day.
Monica damn Mo you still that Bitsh. Hope she drops a real R&B CD soon. Keyshia tried to hold her own next to Mo. Key knew she didn’t want it. But she did better than she usually does. (How messed up was it that guy introduced them. Keyshia, Monica and Keyshia’s mom Frankie.) Y was Snoop there?
Overall I thought the show was good. They pulled the MJ tribute in there really well considering it was so last minute & I’m sure that show was planned for about 6 mths to a year.
Keri Hilson was outtta breath as hail!! sounding like pure shyt!!
Booooy Maxwell was on his Business class fit last night….I lubs me some him!

CIARA MADE ME WHAT TO INFLICT BODILY HARM ON MYSELF AND OTHERS WITH HER DREADFUL VOICE!!! GAWD, IT WAS TERRIBLE!!! I’M OFFICIALLY OVER HER ALL TOGETHER.
NOOOOOOooooo, LOL! WOW…..I didn’t think thats how everybody felt about my summary…but I guess Sandra and most of the SR fam agreed.
All she forgot to mention was the great performance by the guys who did the tribute to the O’Jays. I was so proud of Trey for haning with those power houses. I don’t really know his music, but I have a new respect for him. And he is really adorable. Tyrese was sexy as hell to and don’t generally regard him as sexy, but he has that soul singer swag on lock.
You guys know I have been sticking up for Tiny lately, but I was ashamed of her last night. I’m no longer looking forward to watching her show and probably won’t. I can’t listen to her for too long.
& did Jamie only agree to do the show if he could PROMOTE PROMOTE PROMOTE His upcoming show?
& why (even though he was fab) did Neyo & Jamie sing so many songs. There was no one else who knew MJ songs.. Oh wait. They can’t fvck with Mike vocally so I guess Neyo was the best choice.

You know sometimes I feel so hypocritical when I watch “black” TV because I just can’t get into it. It seems like such bafoonery to me and people don’t mind because it makes money - well all money ain’t good money. And that is not to say that alll “white” TV is good, but I hate feeling obligated to enjoy something because it is “black”. Like the Tiny and Toya show or the Frankie and Neffe show…what do they have to talk about ….really??? I guess I’ll watch re-runs of Run House of put in my Friends DVD….of better yet - read a book!

Monica only stole the show because she has been in the business since she was 14yrs old she is that professional bish that knows how to handle the stage, key can learn alot from Monica & Queen Brandy!
I wondered with all the rumors that Chris Brown was going to be there why he wasn’t. After my kids said they spotted Rih in the audience I knew he was not going to be there. What, are they suppose to uninvite her for Chris(I wish they had) these two are to be apart and the powers that be did a good thing because as someone mentioned most of the ppl looked drunk. No need to add fuel to the fire when there is no guarantee that these two paths would not cross and Chris violates probation. There will be many tributes where Chris will get his Good Boy status back.

I can’t agree. I’ve seen people cower while singing next to powerhouses that they can’t compete with. Particularly Patty Labelle. Johnnie and Tyrese have more power in their vocals than Trey, but he hung in there and didn’t back down. He kept his swagger strong. Tevin might have been more appropriate for his part as he is a tenor with power, but I think it’s cool that they put a new cat in there to show the industry is putting out SOME talent these days.

Don’t get me wrong, MJ deserves every positive tribute available to him but BET sure could have done better. First of all, WTF DID BEYONCE HAVE ON? And her voice.(Sandra, you are so right, she can’t sing a lick!) And the talent! Who was the young guy singing so grossly out of tune and the audience loving it? Was that supposed to be a hit record? Come on younguns. Are our young folks that stupid to idolize so many folks with so little talent? ugh! I was embarssed for the Jackson Family. They should have just left the show as plan, put together a montage of MJ with his music, and did a complete separate show when other/old schoolers could participate. I no longer have respect for Ving Rhimes. He was such an idiot on that stage. I am sorry but somebody should be fired for this foolishness. I thought they should have not let Lil Wayne close with that tackey song. Only Neyo did his thing, and Maxwell. I no longer like Jamie self hating ass for the way he threw that script on the floor. Maxwell should have close the show with Pretty Wings!!! I would have loved to have seen Ginuwine sing one of MJ songs and Ciara did ok to me, but they should have let her do a fast song like Smooth Criminal where she could showed her dance moves. I am sorry but I am embrassed that CNN even follow-up with this mess. In August, MTV will put BET to shame with their awards and tribute to MJ. Hell I believe that VH1 would even do this man justice. BET should just fall of the earth!!!!

I think Mario should have been with Tyrese and Johnny. Not Trey.(IMO). I could barely hear him. Overall the tribute was great. Tevin looked good and sounded great. The last pictures I saw of him on the net were horrible. He cleaned up well.

The problem is that there was too much going on. BET did a great job trying to make it a tribute but some chose to keep their regular schedule, which was ok but for those who did not choose to clean up their act/lyrics/half clothed women shane on them.

Here is my 2 cents …
Jamie did a great job of engaging the crowd and trying to move the focus of of MJ’s personal life and into what the man is iconic for - HIS MUSIC. The nose with the fro, nose with the jherri curl and nose with the perm comment was classic.
Hov gets a pass because I want the autotune to die … so I won’t say anything bad about him.
Bey can do no wrong performance wise - she sounded excellent. She is the only artist who can arrive at an award show while on tour, hair looking a HAWT MESS and still manage to sound angelic. She sounded beautiful, for thoise who would have preferred a crazy in love type performance, maybe next time. She sang beautifully!
IMO - CiCi did a good job. I enjoyed her — she actually sounded 10 times better than normal. I think she is taking vocal lessons.
The OJay’s had me LMAO … and poor Genuine … his career never really took off at the level I wanted it to.
Tyrese & Trey made me appreciate them in a new way, I enjoyed there performance. Mr. Gill just oooozzeesss Tang, but overall the performance was a highlight.
Keri = TERRIBLE = hated it! I would have loved for Jaz to win the award for Best New Artist. I would listen to her album more times than I would Keri’s. I am so glad the crowd’s response is on national TV. So she can replay it over and over again and maybe go back to just writing, the spotlight doesn’t shine on Keri.
Ummmmmmmm CB wanted to dance but the politics and people like Hov, got in the way. Its all good because he will get to do something .. and what’s even better is that he honored him while he was living. People really have an issue separating the personal vs professional life of artist. MJ was known to have an issue with young boys, does it take away from his musical genius NO. CB can dance & sing … he hit Sandra’s GIRl Rhi and now should his future be snatched away?
Neyo did a great job vocally, but he is sill very HARD to look at. He needs to keep his hat on ALWAYS!
Mary Mary to me are hip hop /modern day r & b artist trapped in a GOSPEL contract … they ride that line ALWAYS! I just didn’t know they had a song with the same melody/tune as BLAME IT!
Taraji didn’t look cute, but she spoke well. I would have enjoyed her without the Jodi scene, I can’t stand that MOVIE!
Oh and before I forget Key CO to me did good until she got to the bottom of the stair case, after that my ears were hurting till Mo came in. I love her so … and want her to do well. She sounded great.

I loved Monica, Keri is a great singer but TO ME she can not dance. IMO Usher is a waaayyyyyyy better singer than CB but CB is a better dancer. Everyone who was on last night knows how I feel about Jamie Foxx. Performance was great but I DID NOT care for his jokes about MJ.
Neyo was BY FAR the best performer of the night. His LAd In My Life performance, his boy old school tribute, and his other 2 were great. I was mad Aaron was hoarse because I think he still sounds the same as the old days. Neyo was definately there to pay tribute to his idol.
Keri was good UNTIL the end. I busted out laughing when she went into her MJ piece, poor baby
KC and Monica was good but Monica SHUT HER DOWN! Poor KC, she better watch that footage like it was sports footage and take notes to come out better next time.

Beyonce is all about herself. When Alicia Keys quoted Maya Angelou and said “Don’t go through life with catchers mitts on both hand” I’m para-pharazing, the first thing I thought about was Beyonce and how, her and her dad are so focused on themselves. The attitudes are more, more, more. Clearly her performance was out of context, because she did a portion of her current tour. As many songs as Bey sings it would have been more than easy for her to just sing a song at the mic, with just a spot light on her. She could have done her own rendition of Butterflies or
some MJ song that would have paid tribute, but still showcased her talent. Like NE-YO did.

@aqtpie I think there is some truth to both rumors/stories. Chris was reharsing and the plug was pulled in the 9th hr for some reason. He will get his time to do his MJ tribute so its all good. I am glad he knew back in 2006 that MJ was also a fan of his work.

Oh shoot I forgot about Run’s house and I don’t have a DVR shoot. No matter what the reasons were, wouldn’t you, as a fan rather CB do a MJ tribute that was well put together/rehearsed than a poorly put, last minute/less than half a$$ tribute to MJ? All CB fans should be thanking their lucky stars he was not a part of the tribute to that show last night. I personally think that BET should have waited and done it right. I do however give them credit for honoring him, Wyclef, A-Keys and others that were not even celebs.
