Celebs Out & About

I know you don’t care, but singer Keri Hilson has a boyfriend named Errol whose texturizer, diamond studded earrings and lip gloss makes him look very How U Doin. But I could be wrong. The couple have dated for years, supposedly.

Industry whore Erika Jones celebrated scoring another high stakes baller last night at the elegant Soho Grand Hotel in NYC. Jones, who used to date NBA star Shawn Marion, ran through other wealthy industry cats before finally bagging Kevin Liles, who is Executive Vice President for Warner Music Group. I looked for pics of Jones showing off Liles’ wallet, but there were none. I hear that everybody in the room was laughing behind Liles’ back. Now that’s not nice.

Michael Vick Signs 2-Year Deal With Philadelphia Eagles

Disgraced quarterback Michael Vick has signed a 2-year deal with the Philadelphia Eagles under coach Tony Dungy. The Eagles will hold a press conference this morning to announce the signing.

Sources tell ESPN’s Chris Mortensen the deal is worth $1.6 million with an option for the second year at $5.2 million. Vick can also earn an additional $3 million in incentives over the two year term.

But that likely won’t be enough loot for Vick who is known to burn through cash and lacks even the basic money management skills.

Vick, who was the #1 draft pick by the Atlanta Falcons in 2001, fell on hard times when he was busted for dogfighting. He was convicted and sentenced to 23 months in a federal prison in August 2007.

Vick served his time and was released on July 20. NFL commissioner Roger Goodell conditionally lifted Vick’s suspension allowing him to participate in the NFL preseason workouts aqnd team meetings. While Vick can play in the final 2 games of the preseason, he will not be allowed to play in the regular season unless he is fully reinstated by the league.

Goodall has said he will consider reinstating Vick by October 18-19 at the latest.

Team owner Joe Banner said he spoke with the National Humane Society before signing Vick, who will go head-to-head with quarterbacks Donovan McNabb and backup Kevin Kolb for the starting job. “I pretty much lobbied to get him here,” McNabb said. “I believe in second chances and what better place to get a second chance than here with this group of guys. … He’s no threat to me, not for Kolb. We had the opportunity to add another weapon to our offense.”

Controversial End Of Life Provision Dropped From Health Care Bill

The controversial “end of life” counseling provision in the universal health care bill has been dropped competely. The House version of the health care bill allowed Medicare to reimburse doctors for voluntarily counseling the elderly on end of life issues (such as euthanasia) as an alternative to surgery and expensive treatments that might prolong their lives.

The provision caused a furor among the elderly and their family members who packed town hall meetings in their districts. Barack Obama added fuel to the fire when he blamed the elderly for the soaring costs of health care and questioned the “difficult moral issues” of expensive therapy and treatments for the elderly and terminally ill.

Obama’s own grandmother underwent a hip replacement procedure shortly before she died of cancer because her dislocated hip caused her so much pain. But Obama indicated the procedure should not be covered under Medicare when he said, “I would have paid out of pocket for that hip replacement just because she’s my grandmother.”

He added, “The chronically ill and those toward the end of their lives are accounting for potentially 80 percent of the total health- care bill out here.”

Currently, family members of patients who have been diagnosed with a terminal illness are already counseled on Advanced Directives or Do Not Resuscitate (DNR) orders, which is a written order by a doctor that requires medical personnel to refrain from performing unnecessary procedures (such as CPR) to prolong a patient’s life in the event of a cardiac or respiratory arrest.

But in the House version of the health care bill, the end of life counseling would be provided to patients who were not terminally ill or hospitalized, and critics felt it would lead to so-called “death panels” and talks of euthanasia.

Celebs Out & About: LaToya Jackson

Don’t believe those rumors that Michael Jackson’s older sister LaToya was forced to take a job bagging groceries at the local Piggly Wiggly because she was left out of her brother’s will.

Actually, LaToya is performing her civic duty by volunteering to bag groceries in support of AIDS Awareness.

Caption:

La Toya Jackson is committed to continuing the charitable work her beloved brother Michael began years before his untimely death with AIDS Project LA. From bagging groceries in the APLA to meeting with APLA clients, this is only the beginning of what will be a lifelong dedication by La Toya in supporting the fight against AIDS.

Is Harper Bazaar’s Naomi Campbell Fashion Spread Racist?

A loyal reader emailed me about these pics from a Harper’s Bazaar magazine fashion spread featuring Naomi Campbell. The reader asked if I thought the images were racist. She was particularly annoyed with the image of Naomi Campbell playing double dutch with monkeys while a white man (a hunter watching his prey?) looks on.

She wrote: “Can you see a white supermodel jumping rope with monkeys in the jungle?”

My initial response is, of course the images are racist. Vogue magazine pulled this same stunt with LeBron James and supermodel Gisele Bundchen on its cover in a pose reminiscent of King Kong and Ann Darrow.

Controversy sells and the ultimate purpose of these magazines is to grab the readers eye so they can move magazines off the racks. It’s a shame that celebs like Naomi Campbell and LeBron let themselves be used in this degrading manner. Or maybe they just don’t care.

Amy Winehouse Smitten By Jungle Fever?

Has Amy Winehouse decided to abandon sickly looking rocker types for rugged, hunky brothas with bad hairdos? It looks that way according to these pics taken outside a London pub on August 6. Winehouse can be seen in the arms of a member of her entourage who seems to be going in for a kiss.

Or maybe he’s just congratulating Amy on being allowed back in the United States again. If you recall, Amy was banned form touring in the United States due to all her legal troubles in London involving a pot bust and other charges. But now that she has been cleared of those charges, the ban has been lifted and Amy is free to travel stateside and perform as long as she doesn’t get busted again.

Maybe a brotha can help turn her life around, and maybe she can give him some tips of a new hairstyle.
