Oscar Buzz for ‘Precious’
Although the movie ‘Precious’ didn’t benefit greatly from its association with talk show queen Oprah Winfrey or make it into the top ten in box office receipts in its opening weekend, it still garnered rave reviews from critics. There is even talk of a Best Picture Oscar being bandied about.
‘Precious’ starring Mo’Nique, Gabourey Sidibe (in the title role), and Mariah Carey, took in $1.8 million this opening weekend. The movie is about an illiterate, morbidly obese, Harlem teenager who is raped repeatedly and impregnated twice by her father.
The flick won rave reviews when it was screened at the Sundance Film Festival last January.
Soon thereafter, Oprah Winfrey and Tyler Perry lent their high powered names to the project as executive producers. They personally presented the film at the Toronto Film Festival and its official premiere at AFI Fest 2009 last Sunday.
And in a political coup of sorts, Lionsgate succeeded in getting former president George Bush and former First Lady Laura Bush to host a screening in Houston, Texas last Wednesday.
‘Precious’ opens nationwide on Nov. 20.

This movies doesnt hit my state DC/MD until Nov 12 and im soooooooo pissed. But i have read the book way before the movie. However form the trailer yes i would def say oscar buzz. Everyones talking about this movie.
keep in mind for a limited release 1.8 million is damn good..many movies garnering oscar buzz don’t do well in the theaters..i read the book and i can’t WAIT to see the movie..
Open Nation wide Nov 20th seriously i want to watch the movie so bad but oh well Nov.20 it is.

Precious was only open in 18 theaters in four states so 1.8 million is a lot .
I can’t wait to see it. Everyone is raving.

Did anyone here see this movie and how was it? I know it was only in select theaters. I almost cried from watching the trailer so I know I will probably cry when I see the movie.

Joe Jackson says there was “no
justification” for him being left out of Michael Jackson’s will so he’s suing the estate for an allowance. In his petition Joe lists his monthly expenses as follows:
— $2,500 eating out
— $2,000 for air travel
— $3,000 for hotel bills
— $1,000 for groceries
— $1,200 for rent
— $50 in charitable contributions

The movie was GREAT!!! Monique played the H3LL out of that part. When you wanted to cry, they turned around and made you laugh. I bet the book was better than the movie. 2bme, Lovelylady, Was the book named “Precious” as well?

Regarding MUG-SHOTS I saw one this weekend (From Chicago) where two guys were arrested for murder AFTER they raped a Female and killed her to keep her from going to the cops… ONE of these LOZERS took his pic LIKE he was taking a school year book picture SMILING FROM EAR-to-EAR (Disgusting !!!)
I saw the movie yesterday it was very GOOD yet heartbreaking! Lenny Kravitz is so damn sexy!!!

1.8 million in 18 theaters….18. Sandra do you know what the average per theater is with the above numbers? I did the BEST out of ANY movie this weekend. The #1 movie in America averaged like $3,600 per theater while Precious did $100k plus. An epic fail it is not!

1.8 mill for limited release im sure is GREAT numbers. Gabby was dancing on Ellen also she has a great personality, college student and is in a relationship. seems to be very well rounded plus educated. Oscar buzz, the movie deserves it and Gabby, they say Monique is shying away from the Oscar media push…WHY. Lenny Kravitz celibate…..DAMN!!

Are you joking? $50 for charity? LMAO. Wow, I give more to the homeless on the street every year when I have change. I wouldn’t have even listed that as an expense. Joe Jackson just looks like his breath stanks. Not stinks…stanks. I can’t wait to see this movie. I am going to let the rush go down some, because I hate being all bunched up in the shoe. And like anywhere else, we have some ig-nant mofo’s in the CHI that ruins the experience for you everytime.
