Rappers Akon and Busta Rhymes recently put their money where their mouth was to help a record exec raise $20,000 to bury Detroit's dead.

The sad story unfolded when the city's budget ran out and bodies began piling up in the city morgue. The financially strapped Detroit city government could not even provide potter's burials for the unclaimed bodies.

The dead were mostly indigent and homeless people whose families couldn't afford the burial costs which can vary from $600 to over $6,000. Without the funds to bury the dead, and facing a crisis because space at the morgue was filling up rapidly, Detroit reached out to the local media for help.

Though she was born and raised in the South side of Atlanta -- and probably only set foot in Detroit once or twice -- former Universal/Motown exec Shanti Das, 38, heeded the call for help after reading about the unclaimed bodies on CNNMoney.com.

With the help of her friends - rappers Akon, Kid Rock and Busta Rhymes, Das, who recently lost family members of her own, was able to raise $20,000 to bring the total of unburied dead down from 69 to just 50. But financial help is still needed to bury the rest.

If you would like to donate to the burial fund, visit www.maywerestinpeace.org.

It's a shame that rappers and professional athletes can make it rain in strip clubs and drop $20,000 on rims for their whips, but they can't spare a dime to help a friend bury the dead.

    Wow Sandra are you serious @ this comment "The sad story unfolded when the city’s budget ran out and bodies began piling up in the city morgue. I never heard anything like this before.

  • LovelyLady

    And its a sad day on earth when people are dying so rapidly that the morgue runs out of space. :sad:

  • ReadTheBlog

    I read that story. That was a very nice thing to do...

  • Shauny

    Kudos to Akon, Bussa, and Kid Rock but couldn't Kid Rock and especially Eminem and some of the sports figures in that town donate the funds to bury all 69 deceased?

    I guess I just have a mindset that if I can buy out a bar on a regular, a car that cost as much as a house, jewels that eqauals a month or a years salary of the average Joe, etc, that when chit like this happens it would just be a non issue of me donating the money.

    Come on Motown artists, Pistons, Tigers, Red Wings, Lions, etc. Yall have to do better

  • missy

    Wow that's sad people can't get a decent burial....But i'm glad they were kind enough to raise money for them to receive it.

  • ReadTheBlog

    I remember when they had the OKC bombing...our mourge ran out of space too. And they had the coroners office blocked out of site with white sheets, because of the bodies and body parts that were coming in. I think everyone was claimed here. Not trynna be funny, but there was one leg that was never identified, but I believe even it got a proper burial.

  • waterlily_76

    It is a shame it had to come to this.
    I am glad those mentioned pitched in to help.

  • SugaBrown

    Wow. Didn't know Detroit was that strapped for cash to allow that to happen. Thats so sad. Great that some stars were willing to help out.

    I live here in Detroit and I had no idea. I will be donanting thru my investment company. I think it is sad that you have all these folks out here making money and won't even help bury their family members. WOW!!!!!!!!!!!

  • ReadTheBlog

    Shauny, it be a bad time to do it, but maybe the city should impose a $0.01 sales tax to cover for stuff like this? Or maybe some of those homeless organizations should be taxed, or have to pay an additional state licensing fee to run, for situations as such.

    Detroit has had budget issues for awhile now. last school yr. the school district asked the parents to send the kids to school with toilet paper. The Pistons don't even play in Detroit.

    True the Pistons don't paly in Detroit. But it still isn't a reason not to donate a few dollars.

    Detroit is trying to reopen the Tamara Green case. They want her medical records from the alledged night that she went to the hospital after "The First Lady" beat her up. The hospital said it could not hand over the file due to privacy laws, plus the whole cover up about the party at the Mansion has only been an alledged party.

  • CHARBEE1

    Getting of subject a lil. All this damn lottery money and I wonder well the hell it's going. Because it sure isn't going to the scholls like the Commision is saying.

  • CHARBEE1

    @ Anna

    Yes they are. But I think with the right Judge they could get those records in a heart beat. Even with her being deceased a family member should be able to give them the okay to release them.

  • kwall

    i feel so bad about that city. i have family in detroit and it is just so SAD to see what has happened to a once vibrant, booming city. all the jobs lost, businesses closed, local corruption, and it makes me MAD that the gov't is allowing a major US city to become a modern day ghost town. it's the second time. the first time it was NOLA with the handling of katrina.

    keep your head up @CHARBEE1.

  • Shauny

    Anna and Charbee....give me the tea on what yall are talking about please? Who is Tamara Green? Is that Kwame's jumpoff?

  • http://oneperfectassistant.com ggouch

    WOW! What is happening with the City Budget should be the next story. Great Give back to those that got involved

    S.R. you said it. I would personally would love to see less of the demi-god like, ego-sized homes, cars and trinkets and more of what is being done to give back.

    Give back to the buying public. We purchase your music, we go to see your movies, our children nag us into buying your clothes. You MUST GIVE BACK each and everytime you see need.

    Kwame(Then Detroit Mayor)had a party at the Mansion and Tamara was a hired stripper. His wife came home and found her dancing and whooped her azz, Tamara was shot while in a parked car shortly after the party(that did not happen).

  • CHARBEE1

    She was alleged to dance at a party at the Mayoral residence. They say Kwame's wife popped up and jumped on her. She was killed in a drive by shooting the following year. It is said that she was killed so she wouldn't come forward about the party that still hasn't been proven.That is so sad. She left behind 3 children.

  • CHARBEE1

    @ Anna

    Do you believe that party happened?

    Why did Mrs Mayor fight her? She was just doing her job. Why not whip his ass for hiring her? SMH

    Kwame got the boot, he lives in Texas but has been back in Detroit going to court to reduce his restitution. They(the city) want to know why he wants to reduce his monthy payments when he paid $15,000 for his wife to have surgery. He said she had a hernia after giving birth to one of their kids and needed the skin tightened, but we all know she got a tummy tuck. They asked Kwame why would he pay for his wife to have surgery, he said he owed it to her for cheating on her and he wanted to make her feel beautiful. :lol:

  • pyt305

    This is sad...Im gad they stepped up and helped but what about the other 'rich' celebs who couldve helped?

  • CHARBEE1

    Kwame could have been the next Coleman Young. But his ego was too damn big.
    The only people I feel sorry for are his children and Tamara Green's children.
    But don't worry his behind is going back to jail, you better beleive it.
    I wonder why the Chief resigned after all the bull broke.

  • CHARBEE1

    @ Anna

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    Yeah it happened a very dear friend of the family was there. He & his lady who dances says Em and Dre were there too and I do beleive it. They don't recall Carlita rolling up in there and whipping no ass though. Although since the Mansion is so huge it could have happened anywhere.
  • CoCoBelle
    I :cosign: what everybody has already said...That was a good look for Akon, Busta and everybody else...And it would be a good look for the Detroit teams to come out the pocket and support there city...even if you don't play there! Just saying! But all this Kwame stuff got me going in circles...i have been out the loop for a minute i see...Oh yeah...Hey Everybody, It's CoCoBelle, I'm new to SR but have been lurking for awhile...glad i finally made it in!
  • CoCoBelle
    Thanks Lady!
  • http://umysis.com Kim
    Dang! I must have missed this, but I'm not surprised. Between corrupt Kwame and the equally corrupt city council, everyone was living large at the city's expense. It's a sad day when you can't bury your dead.
    Now Detroit Public Schools is up in arms 'cuz Robert Bobb (Fed-appointed administrator)is kickin' azz, takin' names, and firing people when kids have been bringing their own TP to school for a few years, now. Long overdue - I say.
    I heart Robert Bobb, and hope the court finds Kwame in violation of his probation and send him straight to jail.
  • va_shawty
    This is very sad. I'm glad that Akon and Busta Rhymes helped out. It is good to read something positive about our rappers. :woot:
  • pointhimout
    now shanti do one better and have your "rich" and affluent friends just write checks. i hate these dumb ass fundraises that generate much of nothing. i say yall celebs sell off one of your fleet of vehicles or something, but still, just YOU write a check.
    that really is horrible in Detroit. just wow. i can't imagine, but none of us expect to ever be in that situation...very sad.
  • mistarie
    And I don't think this was a good look for Akon and Busta at all. Why are you helping to RAISE money to bury the dead and you can't just come out and DONATE the money to bury them. You don't get kudos from me for not even coming out of your pocket to help. And with thst, you could only get 19 people buried? Are you serious? I've seen your house and you should be ashamed of yourself. Letting those people pile up. Busta, I kow you're broke, so I won't even get on you and your costume jewlery.
  • mistarie
    *supposed to say* Akon, I've seen your house
  • M_promp2
    Good story and good point Sandra. They throw all this money on skank strippers, when that money can be put to better use.
