FanMAIL: Fantasia’s Brother SHould Be Ashamed of Himself

With the exception of a few artists who don’t play that, the majority of reality TV shows are centered around dysfunctional families. It makes for good TV and pulls high ratings because the public identifies so closely with the dysfunction on the small screen.

Fantasia continues the tradition of exposing the dysfunction in black families on her new reality show Fantasia For Real which premiered last night on VH1.

One loyal reader took immediate issue with the show’s portrayal of Fantasia’s self-indulgent brother “Teeny” who lives in Fanty’s pool house and doesn’t seem to have a steady source of income.

The email was edited for clarity.

I love your website because it not only keeps it real but makes people aware of the bs in our communities and i really would like you to post something about teeny aka joe fantasia’s brother. It’s not just that she is supporting him… i think it goes deeper than that why do black women support black men … let me rephrase that. Why are our black men letting black women take care of them as if they were a small child. I’m so confused ……. and it’s not just black women, it’s women in general that support them and enable them to be dead beat ass bums and daddy’s. Now i’m not saying that they’re aren’t men out there that make a good living and support their children and their families because they’re are plenty that do. i just can’t help but be disturbed after watching Fantasia for Real’s first episode..

Teeny should be ashamed of himself. He is almost 30 years old living in his sister’s pool house with no driver’s license but driving 2 very expensive cars just being a bum and living literally in a fantasy world!!! Oh, it was so wrong Sandra!! Even his girl commented on the fact that he needs to get it together. But i had to roll my eyes at her comment because, “thats her MAN” so obviously she isn’t too repulsed by it as she came across. But moving on….

It jsut makes me angry that this is the state of some of our black men. they want to be respected but don’t do a damn thing to earn the respect. I don’t know, maybe I’m out of line but I pray for Fantasia because she is not only a fellow dark skin woman in the industry (I’m dark skinned and I know it’s not easy for dark skinned women in the music biz) but she is really talented and obviously has a huge heart. It looks to me that Teeny will probably be on her payroll til’ she runs out of money. If i were her I would say ‘get the hell out my house! You’re not my man and I don’t have to take care of you.’ …

Clearly she is enabling him which is sad. She needs to kick him out the house, so he can be forced to take care of himself. At the beginning of the show they showed her distributing money amongst the family and I was like, “The only person she should be giving it to is Zion, her daughter.”

QUESTION? Who puts gas in Teeny’s cars? Who pays the insurance? How does he drive them if he doesn’t have a drivers license? She is supporting his unlawful behavior if she bought the cars and lets him drive those cars.

You know, I didn’t watch this BS last night. Judging by the reader’s letter and the trailer I seen, this show is something I can completely do without.

While I can appreciate Joe being put on blast, he is like this because the WOMEN in his life allow him to be! Why get a job or work for anything in that matter when you have a sister who’s frontin the bill for EVERYTHING!?! I watched both shows last night Pep and Fantasia. I want Fantasia to know, its ok to HELP her family memebers out…but taking care of a person that can get a JOB..no no no. I just hope she looks at the show and understand, she has ONE CHILD…NOT TWO. And I also saw how her aunt looked at the mom and said YOU did this..and she got quiet like…I KNOW. But just understand, its not YOUR JOB to take care of them…its their job to get a damn job. Now..on Pep…I love the cast of ladies. Kittie looks like Pep sister…if they are just friends…they look allot alike. And Jackie…I miss her in TV land. I hope she finds that special someone. I think she deserves true happiness. And J. I know how it is to help family out and it does play a role on your heart, however I too had to step back and let grown folks handel their own business. I watched the show and it was entertaining, but that’s about it. Fantasia’s brother should be embarrassed. He is a sorry excuse for a man. I was watched the show last night and besides Teeny it looks like its going to be a good show, me being a man I was embarrassed at how Teeny displayed his so called manhood, and I normally don’t get embarrassed at how people on T.V are living thier life. Hopefully he does come to realize that he is not a man, and his girl how can you say this is your man and be proud of that, I think she is just happy to say I go with Fantasia brother. It’s the momma’s fault. She didn’t prepare her kids for adulthood. Fantasia has a beautiful gift of voice. IT is sad that we know so much about her pesonally, that it takes away from her talent as a singer. Why would her people allow her to do this show?

Which makes me want to give KUDOS to Keisha Coles for deciding to pull back from the reality tv. And to Monica, who pretty much kept us focused on her music on her show.

I refuse to tune into this or any other reality show garbage. It’s ironic how some people criticize Tyler Perry for his “supposed” baffoonery and coonery, yet people tune into this kind of b.s. whenever the powers that be air them.

I watched the first episode online yesterday and Teeny definitely needs some help! How is he being a man by living off his younger sister? It can be difficult when your family relies on you for everything and you are the sole bread winner. Many NBA stars are in the same situation.

I am a huge Fantasia fan. I have never watched an episode of American Idol so I didn’t know who she was until she won. I think this reality TV show will show her fans what she has to endure.

Because the woman raising these black kids are babying them and not raising them to be independent. I argue with my wife constantly about letting my son do things for himself. These “dependent” boys just grow up to be “dependant” men. We need to raise our children to be efficient independent adults. That requires tough love and means your child probably won’t be your friend.

Oh it’s men also that are enablers for their sons. I see it too much. On another note, the problem with this generation IS the past generation. Too many parents want to be friends with their children. Where did that thinking come from. If that person calls you Mom or Dad, it isn’t MEANT for you to be their friend. That time will come when they are ADULTS.

ohpretty1 – i agree with you fully! that is why I mentioned my wife so you understand that I’m an enabler. We have a serious problem on our hands that isn’t going to be fixed until parents raise their kids the way our grandparents raised their kids (75-95yrs old)

i;m hoping that they had teeny do some EXTRA stuff because cameras are rolling. But sadly it probably was the real him. I can’t believe he is knocking down her pool house to build himself a studio.

I felt bad for tasia when it was revealed that she only reads on a 7th grade level. this is why her money is getting blown. she probably has people handling her business and she isn’t able to read/comprehend the contracts/offers/bills etc.

Amen!!!! I agree 1000%.
My three year old asks me all the time if we are friends, and I tell her what my mom told me. Right now Im your mom, but when you are grown and on your own we can be the best of friends. I appreciate my mom telling me what I needed, not wanted to hear and actually raising me. Thats is what we need to do with our kids as well.

He has NO RESPECT for women! Looked at how he talked to his Aunt. I dont really blame Fantasia, I blame his mother. I have a feeling he has been doing this for a long ass time. He didnt become this sorry ass man overnight. If his mother would of raised a better man/son….he probably wouldnt be this way. Hell, her daughter is sleeping with married men….anywhooo…there are only two people she should support/help. Her mom & daughter. Period..point blank! NO ONE ELSE! I’ll give her another couple of years before she files for bankruptcy. Its sad but thats our people at times.
