IRS: Wyclef Jean’s Charity YELE Is Shady

Thanks to loyal reader BlackBarbie404 for sending this link to a story on Smoking Gun about Wyclef Jean’s “charity” which apparently only enriches him and his family. Now I want my money back. I think I’ll call the bank and cancel my donation.

The Haiti earthquake has already triggered hundreds of thousands of donations to musician Wyclef Jean’s charitable foundation, which expects to raise upwards of $1 million a day in the disaster’s wake. However, Internal Revenue Service records show the group has a lackluster history of accounting for its finances, and that the organization has paid the performer and his business partner at least $410,000 for rent, production services, and Jean’s appearance at a benefit concert. Though the Wyclef Jean Foundation, which does business as Yele Haiti Foundation, was incorporated 12 years ago–and has been active since that time–the group only first filed tax returns in August 2009. That month, the foundation provided the IRS with returns covering calendar years 2005, 2006, and 2007–the only periods for which it has publicly provided a glimpse at its financial affairs. In 2006, Jean’s charity reported contributions of $1 million, the bulk of which came from People magazine in exchange for the first photos of a pregnant Angelina Jolie (the actress reportedly directed that the publication’s payment go to Jean’s charity, not her personally). As seen on the following pages from the foundation’s 2006 tax return, the group paid $31,200 in rent to Platinum Sound, a Manhattan recording studio owned by Jean and Jerry Duplessis, who, like Jean, is a foundation board member. A $31,200 rent payment was also made in 2007 to Platinum Sound. The rent, tax returns assure, “is priced below market value.” The recording studio also was paid $100,000 in 2006 for the “musical performance services of Wyclef Jean at a benefit concert.” That six-figure payout, the tax return noted, “was substantially less than market value.” The return, of course, does not address why Jean needed to be paid to perform at his own charity’s fundraiser. This is disappointing and hopefully he can explain. I hope because the Haiti situation is unlike anything he has ever seen before that he will take all the funds he received and does right with them this time.

I sadly have to admit that we as a people are our own worst enemies. In the third world countries, it is the supposed politicians, Non Governmental Organisation employees and social workers who benefit the most from donations and aide….. Even for Wyclef, it’s probably his aunt, uncle, cousinn, cousin-sister, mother’s brother’s wife etc employed by ths charity…..

I am not surprised at all. That is why I would give my money to the Red cross, ADRA, UN, OXFAM etc coz much as YTs can be dodgy, they set some limits on themselves. I mean cumon, even Bill Clinton admitted that 1st world leaders do abuse their positions but they do it while serving their people fully… unlike certain tyrants I could mention.

    @Choco
    I totally hear you.
This is an email that a yt co worker sent to me and another minority(not black). why? I have no idea. ANd this is a lady that never emails me random or relidious stuff.

For any prayer warriors you know…the folklore in Haiti is that 206 years ago Haitians made a 200 year pact with the devil to get rid of the French. This island has been plagued with voodoo. Missionary’s that I have spoke with and e-mailed for years say it is an ongoing battle against the rampant belief in voodoo.
This is a perfect time to pray that voodoo releases its hold (after all, the myth/folklore is that 6 yrs. ago the pact was over) that Jesus Christ rises up out of the horrific debris and rubble left behind from this 7.7 earthquake that just happened to be seismically CENTERED on Port au Prince.

That the people of Haiti will hunger for the love of Jesus Christ and throw off this oppressiveness they have been under for 200+ years. They have been ruled by despots and dictators that have raped the land and people, poorest nation in the Caribbean. Pray that this is a new beginning for these people during this unbelievable tragedy. Also pray for our military and all the rescue workers, that are working in excruciating circumstances, in a land where there really are very few flat spots to set up rescue relief efforts. God can and will do amazing things in this country!!!

    LadyLioness says:

Of course the IRS is going to try to downplay Wyclef’s organization because people are sending all their money to his organization rather than to places like RED CROSS, which is in pocket with the IRS and the UN. You only have to file taxes if you actually have a certain level of income as a foundation. I know they would do something to get the dummies to give over their money to them, just like with Hurricane Katrina. When you send your money to the RED Cross, they don’t give it all to the people that need it. They collect it in an account and then send the cheapest supplies possible and pocket the rest. Don’t be so gullible to believe this people. The IRS is not even a part of the United States Government!! I will continue to donate to Wyclef’s organization.

stuff like this is what makes people not to want to donate to charities. I prefer to donate actual stuff (clothes, food, toiletries, toys) to charities throughout the year. But when there is a disaster we have no choice but to hope the money we send will mostly be used in the right places.

I understand all charities have overhead costs, but the majority of the monies received should be going to the people in need.

 I should have seen this one coming. It never ceases though to amaze me how selfish and opportunistic people can be when it comes to a traumatic disaster.

Now I’m sure we’re gonna hear people (or probably not) reporting that the food and aid that is being sent there is NOT getting to the people, yet going to the already corrupt government who worship’s “rain” gods in order to control the well being of people, much like other 3rd world countries like in Africa. SMH. I guess it’ll be this way though to the end of time.

  57. 57
    pointhimout says:

i believe it. now at the same time, lets run down the red cross, united way and those organizations. I figured this a long time ago. what celebrity actually has a charity or non profit to help people 100%? no, i really want to know because I just dont believe there are any.

you have to ask urself if his appearance fee to do a show or show up is one thing, why would he or any celebrity to any act (kindness or performance wise) for free? No one can say what they will or will not do until they’re in that situation.

I dont judge him. He’s using his clout and fame to pad his pockets. he’s not the only one. and no that still doesn’t make it “right.”

I’ve been saying for years if celebrities or the wealthy want to help so bad, just write a effin check. why the fundraiser where we the public give our money and a large portion goes towards their appearance fee all the while they’re receiving praise for doing something for charity. AINT ISH FREE, even helping others. as the old saying goes ‘time (reall) is money.’

Wyclef’s Yele organization has taken in over $1 million is donations. Wyclef says he’s helping to pick up bodies. Well, we’ve only seen him twice and both times was at the Haiti airport. There are no bodies at the airport.

When the media pressed him to explain what he’s doing with the donations, one of his people said they are flying a plane in loaded with supplies next week. Why next week when their people need food now?! And only one plane? It is obvious that Wyclef has no charity organizational skills. He has no staff to mobilize food or supplies. His 4 home boys are board members of Yele and he’s paying them over $8,000 each a month out of donations!

The rest of the money goes to paying office rent and paying Wyclef to perform concerts or paying for airtime at a TV station that he owns. Only $79,000 out of $1 million in donations went to Haiti last year!

I’ve already instructed my bank to cancel my substantial donation to Yele.org. I’ll donate to another organization that keeps better records and can prove what they are doing with the money.

I wish people would not look to this as an excuse not to donate. Red Cross can’t be trusted after Katrina. Either way, the important part is that you took it upon yourself to help out. It’s out of your hands after..anyone who bothers to steal will be dealt with. Wyclef can’t get away with such a thing during this international crisis..too much attention.

Sorry my comment is still being moderated..while waiting..here (RESPONSE TO ACCUSATIONS):

Locke, through Yéle Haiti’s PR company, sent a list of “Financial Facts,” which can be seen below.

Fact: Yéle Haiti, originally called the Wyclef Jean Foundation, filed a tax return in 2000 and then suspended activities until 2005 and so was not required by law to file a tax return until it resumed operation.

Fact: Yéle Haiti received a clean bill of health in independent external audits conducted in 2005, 2006, 2007 and 2008 by the firm of Tempesta & Farrell, P.C..

Fact: Yéle Haiti was guided by the firm of Grant Thornton LLP to ensure that all transactions involving board members Wyclef Jean and Jerry Duplessis were conducted to fully comply with both the spirit and letter of the law governing such matters.

Fact: Yéle Haiti offices are located in Platinum Sound, the recording studio owned by Wyclef and Jerry Duplessis in order to save money. The organization pays only $2,600 a month for the space and a shared reception service, instead of considerably more for the same arrangement in midtown Manhattan.

Fact: Wyclef Jean was paid $100,000 in connection with a benefit concert in Monte Carlo in 2006, which was organized by a for-profit organization. The vast majority of that amount went towards costs related to the performance, including the hiring of backing musicians and other costs related to the production.

Fact: Yéle Haiti purchased $250,000 of airtime on the commercial television station Telemax in Haiti that is owned by Wyclef and Jerry. We have documentation allocating the hundreds of hours of Yéle programming, over several years, that addressed a wide range of development and social issues in Haiti.

No problem.. I’m of Haitian descent & I know Wyclef does more than even people back home. Him being a celebrity who actual claims his heritage (*cough* Usher, Maxwell, Garcelle Beauvais, DJ Whoo Kid, Tony Yayo, etc), that lifts us up alone. He’s always advocated for Haiti. How about Smoking Guns, the Post, etc go down there & help and then make accusations. Why not post other links people can use instead? Just there to discredit..

He just posted a Youtube response to all this..check it out. Don’t let this deter you from donating money. If you are skeptical, donate $ elsewhere because the clothing, etc won’t get there fast. There many places like “Doctors without Borders,” “Hope for Haiti,”etc!

I waited BEFORE commenting, because it seems like a YT rigged scam propoganda hit to me. The Red Cross had ppl stealing during the Katrina fiasco.

All of these charities have overhead. Where do you think they get the money from? Out of their own pockets? Hell no! They get it from donation dollars.

When white charities do the same thing, it’s mistake or just good business.

Sandra, I am extremely disappointed that you reacted like you did without any investigation. Very reactionary. The sleazy powers that be count on ppl like you.

    Hey Family,

I saw on the news that it is RARE that charities give %100 of the donations to the people they are serving….it’s called “overhead costs”…so if he’s paying $8,000 to folks he got working for them…I think that’s low….Do you think people working for the Red Cross getting less than that, or more?? I’ll let the family think about that one….

Maybe Wyclef only sent one plane, BECAUSE THEY ARE TURNING PLANES AROUND at Port Au Prince, b/c THERE IS NO WHERE FOR THEM TO LAND….the FAA has taken over the airport/in control of the air space, and diverting planes to Florida & the Dominican Republic.

And as far as Auntie cancelling her donation, he is about to get that back, and then some! The proceeds from the telethon that is being broadcast on ALL THE MAJOR NETWORKS, MTV VH1 and ALL THE CABLE CHANNELS on Friday is being split between 5 charities….Wyclef’s organization and the Red Cross ARE INCLUDED.

Love you Auntie, but I think you might have jumped the gun on this one…..I plan on donating as well…sometime this week…it’s between the Red Cross & Wyclef for me.

    That is all! LOL

    I’m gonna say this

After the BET awards there was an article in the paper about Haiti and how the people were eating and some people were selling mud pies..and i was like this cant be right cuz Wyclef doing all these things there for all these years … I’m sad to say the jury is still out on that…

As far as him taking expenses CAN WE ALL SAY GREEDY..if you are a mutil millionaire rapper, singer, producer, WHY would you still be taking “expenses” out of money intended for the poor..its not justifable and it you wish to justify i pity you..wyclef AND ALL THESE CELEBS ARE SUPPOSE TO BE GIVING ACCORDING TO THEIR PORTIONS AS WE ALL SHOULD..NOT ASK US TO DONATE IN THEIR NAME OR ON THEIR BEHALF. NO ARTIST THAT CAN AFFORD TO END HUNGER IN AMERICA SHOULD BE TELLING YOU TO BRING CAN FOODS TO THEIR TOUR STOPS

Now that being said..The Lord has called him (wyclef)out..and now as you can clearly see he is taking him through the storm..hopefully he recieves the messages and comes out a better man and ready to fully handle his responsibilty to the people of Haiti. My prayers are with him!

    MsG says:

Usher said in an interview years ago that he was not Haitian and it was just a rumor. His parents are African Americans from Tennessee…meaning not of Haitian descent. Maxwell is Puerto Rican(his father)and black. Garcelle (Fancy) and Jimmy-Jean Louis(Phat Girlz actor) are both of Haitian descent and of course they proudly claim it, which they should.
The other people just cannot claim something they are not.
