Rajaan Bennett, Star High School RB Killed in Apparent Murder/Suicide

Rajaan Bennett’s future was full of promise: just two weeks ago, the McEachern star RB signed to play football at Vanderbilt.

But early this morning, Bennett was shot to death in an apparent murder/suicide at his family’s Powder springs, Georgia home. Police say Clifton O’Neal Steger, 39, a former boyfriend of Bennett’s mother, shot Bennett during a domestic dispute before turning the gun on himself.

A third man inside the home was also shot, but his injury was non-life threatening.

“I’m standing here in a daze,” Steger’s mother, Gladys Steger, told the AJC when reached by phone at her home in Milledgeville.

Police arrived at the home around 2:30 am, about four minutes after someone inside the home called 911 and whispered they needed help. As officers approached the front door they heard four or five shots from inside.

Immediately after the shots were fired, Narjaketha Bennett, 37, and her brother, Taiwan Hunter, 32, who was wounded in the gunfire, ran from the house. Two teens emerged from the home shortly afterwards. They were not injured.

When officers entered the home, they found the bodies of Steger and 18-year-old Rajaan Bennett.

Hunter was undergoing surgery just after daybreak Thursday at Atlanta Medical Center, police said.

School officials held a news conference this morning to discuss what Bennett meant to the school.

“We have a population of 2,200 kids, and when you’re Rajaan Bennett, you touch the lives of all 2,200,” principal Regina Montgomery said.

She said counselors would be at the school to help students with the grieving process, but, “We don’t know what we’re going to do tomorrow, we’re just trying to get through today together.” Read More…

I cannot stand these weak-willed beyotches who get with these violent ignoramuses and then put their children in harm’s way. There are so many Black males caught up in the penal system and the juvenile system all because they were trying to protect their weak-willed mother’s from the abuse at the hand of men that are not even their father. This is painful and I am so saddened by this news. Ugh! When will women learn that domestic violence involves everyone: your family, your friends, your co-workers, your community…etc. If you are a victim then everyone in your circle is a victim. It is time for women to become emotionally healthy and stop exposing their loved ones to the dangers associated with domestic violence. This guy should have been in jail a long time ago and this could have been avoided. Now she will have to live with the fact that she was too weak-willed to leave an abusive situation. Tragic indeed.

My prayers and condolences go out to his family and friends. This is very tragic and sad. We’ve GOT to be more careful when assessing certain traits of our mates. You have to take heed to those “stalker” tendencies. I take no jokes lightly when they’re threatening, i.e. “I’ll kill you if you leave me…I’m just playing.” May not be. This happened to a very dear military friend of mine @ Whitby Island, WA; shot point-blank between the eyes with a 9mm by her ex while their 3-yr-old daughter was lying next to her in the bed…watching!! This saddens my soul to know that we live in a world like this. RIP Faith; RIP Rajaan!!

This is truly tragic! Wasn’t the murderer the victim’s mother’s ex HUSBAND instead of ex boyfriend though? They have the same last name which is why I asked.

Women, please do better. It doesnt matter whether the man is violent, busted, immature, or whatever. Please know, especially if you have children (males at that), that the man you bring into their lives will impact their lives. Bring in an example. Don’t let your need for a warm body ruin your life and the lives of your children.

I think it’s because people hear this story all too often. If he were killed at school it would be a different set of vents but he was killed by his mother’s ex. We do not know the entire story but guess what? We never will because the coward took his own life as well. And regardless to knowing the entire story this reads like a book many of us have read all too often, fact is her ex killed her child, and she chose her ex, not saying it’s her fault, but I’m sure that woman is questioning herself as we speak and maybe her story will cause other women to question themselves and their situations….I’m sorry, but too many women place a man above themselves AND their children, not saying this is the case with her, but the end result is Rajaan is dead…so sad, especially if it could ahve been prevented.

Choco, no one is saying that this is directly the mother’s fault in this particular case. All I am saying is WE (me as a single mother of a 5 year old son included) have to be careful who we let into our lives. If someone I dated cause injury or death to my son, HELL YES I would feel responsible because I brought this man into my son’s life and space. It doesnt matter if people recognize that before or after the funeral. There is no “soapbox” here. I was just recognizing the need to be more careful.

I dont know this woman or the murderer but this is similiar to many situations I have been familiar with. Children and families are hurt or killed during a domestic dispute. It happens all the time.

All predators pick their pray. There are women that abusive predators would never approach. Once I was working with a family and a young man present looked at me with utter disgust on his face and said, “Beyotch, I hate you because you have too much self-esteem. I need to take you home and beat your a** and put you in your place.” I looked at him square in the face and told him, “At this time of the day, you would be headed to your second job because I don’t play a man standing around in my presence doing nothing.” Of course it ticked him off further but he knew the type of woman I stood for and knew that he was not worthy.

RIP. We don’t know the story but seeing that the uncle was shot and the mom or none of the others were shot there is more to the story. Yes, he killed himself and the child but can we please find out the whole story before we condemn this women. Maybe he has never shown any violent tendencies towards this woman. Who’s to say that they weren’t giving this man a hard time for being with her. Some kids don’t like their mother’s boyfriends for their own selfish reasons. I’m not saying that this is the case but we can’t automatically assume that she had poor taste in men.

Would you ever see an anaconda attack an elephant? No. Why? Because he cannot take him down. If you study the behavior of animals then you will have a better understanding of human nature. Animals choose their prey very very carefully. Psychopathic behavior is not an instant thing that pops up all of a sudden. This behavior is carefully crafted over the years until it culminates into what happened between Rajaan and this man. I try not to stick my personal life and the life of loved ones. Some years back my cousin was killed in front of her two year old with a hammer. She was left for dead from Friday to Sunday. She let him in because there has never been a trace of violence. We grew up with this person. He was not the father of the baby and he wasn’t the boyfriend. He just snapped. Has he ever been violent before? NO. Has he ever raised his voice or threatened her? No. As much as ppl go to school and are taught to psycho analyze it is just that ‘taught’. I understand ppl have situations that they have dealt with and feel like this situation sounds the same but you don’t know. I haven’t had a day that goes by in 12 years that I don’t have to deal with her senseless murder. I take it to heart when ppl say that about women making stupid choices. My cousin was no way stupid and wasn’t putting herself in harms way. I’m so emotional as I type this but please guys think about things before it is said. I know that this is opinion blog but try looking at both sides of the coin.

The problem is weak-willed lonely desperate women who become quickly involved with a guy. Off all the women I have met who made it out (by the skin of their teeth) of an abusive situation with a guy, the same story: We had this worldwind romance and we fell for each other very quickly.

It is time for women to begin to look at themselves and their choices. It is like women who contract HIV from a guy always wanting to blame the guy. But when you ask them if they, along with the guy, went together to get tested, you quickly find out that they themselves were never tested before having sex with the guy. OK…am I missing something? So you did not care enough to get tested and you slept with another person unprotected and uninformed and you want to blame someone because of your HIV positive status? GTFOH!

Walking away from a abusive situation isn’t as easy as it sounds. For some it is and for others it isn’t. I know a girl who dated a guy that started to beat her azz almost immediately after they met. I mean like a few days later! But it took her several years of black eyes, knots on her face and head, bruised ribs, and busted lips for her to get the picture. When she got tired she left. The sad part of the story is that she had a child by him, so even though they are no longer to together. She has a consent reminder of their abusive relationship. On top of being a woman beater, he was a loser type, fake azz hustler, want to be gangsta. I agree with Jewelry, abusive men, know who to approach and who not to. This same man tried to talk me, and I told him flat out. NICCAH I WILL KILL YOUR BLACK AZZ AND GO STRAIGHT JAIL! From that day to this one, he won’t even look my direction.

Jewelry when I found out she was pregnant, I was like really! But what could I say or do? I learned along time ago to stay away from those types of relationships. @Krysi, no one ever said it was justified for him to kill his own flesh and blood HOWEVER, if a man can beat the living daylights out of the woman who bore his children then I wouldn’t put it past him to kill both me AND my children. Basically what my point was is that situation was predictable, violence begets violence. And as for McNair NO she was not justified in killing him because she didn’t know how to handle the fact that she had been played but seriously, McNair placed himself in a very unstable situation and those were the consequences to his actions. IMO murder is never justified because I don’t believe in an eye for an eye but since when has that ever mattered to the crazy mofos who are pulling the trigger???? It won’t and it NEVER WILL, if you go around thinking like that you might end up next, keep yourselves out of obviously bad situations as much as possible, no we can’t avoid everything but sorry in McNair’s case cheating(which he had done several times) was a voluntary action, not involuntary and he just so happened to cheat with the wrong unstable chick.
