Celeb Style: Is Janelle Monáe Channeling Willow Smith for Her 944 Mag Cover?

Will and Jada Pinkett-Smith’s daughter Willow was the topic of discussion on numerous blogs and message boards today. People either love her eclectic sense of style or they hate it.

Personally, I LOVE Willow’s style. At the tender age of 9, she has a keener eye for fashion than most women three times her age. Willow’s swag is undeniable and she should be applauded for possessing the talent to put together so many different sophisticated looks at such a young age.

I see a career in fashion in this kid’s near future.

On the other hand, singer Janelle Monáe is so fashionably impaired that her rider for what she would not wear during the cover shoot for 944 Magazine was pages long. I can just imagine what it said: no color choices and no originality of any kind!

Here’s what Janelle said about her “decidedly-masculine, almost androgynous” blank slate look**:

“There are so many ways we can be sexy and confident. I am not faithful to any of the clothes that the world says I have to wear to be more feminine. Strength and femininity come from me, not my clothes.”

I read Williow has the same stylist as Rhianna. Makes me question…why does a 9year old need a stylist? I mean, yea they have money but a stylist? At 9? That’s a bit much.

    Cute girl nonetheless

I like that photo of Janelle Monae. She’s not copying Willow, she’s been eccentric since… forever.

I don’t like her music but Janelle is speaking the truth…You are suppose to make the clothes not the other way around….

Willow will grow up, look back at these pics and chit, and sue her parents and “stylists.”

    SMH.

What happened to your clothes matchin? Is that not stylish anymore? I guess I’m just too old cause I don’t get all of the mis-matching of color and prints with gaudy, cheap looking accessories. IMO Willow’s “style” is not cute for any female, child or woman.

JANELLE MONAE REMINDS ME OF FRANKIE LYMAN FOR SOME REASON

THE CLOTHES ARE OKAY FOR A CHILD- THE HAIR ON THE OTHER HAND HAS TO GO>>>>>>>>>>>

I just can not get with Janelle Monae and her strong choices in fashion. Those bowties? Those tuxedos? :nono:

She is gimmick-y to me…much like GaGa..

Whew. A kid like Willow is a force to be reckoned with! If Jada is anything like me, she encourages but the decision rests with the little one and the stylist…

and of course she needs a stylist; she’s an actress!

I let my kids have creative expression, but I still draw the line and I am not that open minded to let them walk out the house looking like a yard sale explosion… Hopefully I am not killing their creative flow

I’m serious Choco..too much freedom can lead to your child being the next Lady GaGa or Kelis wearing them aramadillo shoes. Not on my watch

i agree what happen to ur clothes matching….im all for letting kids express themselfs but there is a line to be drawn at some point….it all depends on the freedom u give ur child and if jada likes it i love it

Matching is frowned upon these days… matchy matchy is bad when someone is referring to your clothes.

Matching color to color, etc. shows your lack of style (in the fashion world..) and well, lack of thought and imagination…yes, red does go with red, but its boring and expected…in fashion you search for unexpected…

I’ll be damned if I let Hollywood dictate to me what fashion I should wear. Some styles are cute and others not so much; I tend to lean more toward conservative styles, and if what “they” say is true, then I should be comfortable in whatever I wear. Willow’s is kind of off the wall to me, it looks like something a grown woman would wear, I don’t like that. To me Hollywood keeps pushing these children to look and act like mini-adults and that is not cool. Let them enjoy their childhood, adulthood has all it’s problems that can be dealt with when they become just that, adults. I know at the age of 9 my mother still gave the yes or no to anything I wore and I wasn’t woman enough to say otherwise, lol!

    TSRBenz says:

i dont care for her style because it make her looks like shes headed to be a tom boy especially with that hair cut @ 9 a hair cut like that is over the top

    Silhouette says:

I think it’s great that she does not define her beauty by her hair. I think the way she dresses is really no different than the way Punky Brewster use to dress when I was a little girl. Yes, it might not be the norm, but who says that it’s taking away from her childhood or her ability to be a child. I’ve seen interviews with the whole family there and the Smith children seem to be well rounded. I think this will be my third time but I will say it again. I  the Smith family.

I see y’all ain’t brought up Madonna’s daughter Lourdes…..damn there the same style as Willow,if not worse, she just wear darker colors…..I personally don’t see anything wrong either one of the girls (except Willow’s hair in this pic, I like it though overall)

….these are the children of some of the biggest stars in the world….

I hope these kids ain’t reading this and seeing what is being said about them…..I still say leave them alone!

You cannot compare little kid’s clothes to that of a grown person….that’s how these shorties end up wearing coochie cutters & thongs, and their pants sagging down to their knees(I can’t stand that shyt on a man!)…trying to be grown….I’m just sayin….

Side bar: Angelina & Brad need to drop Shiloh off at Will & Jada’s so some of Willow’s “girly girl dust” can rub off…..

I like the Chuck pants too! That’s something I would have worn as a kid. Too cute!

Janelle Monae reminds me of a young Anita Baker in the face. She’s pretty.
