Woman Wakes Up to Find Intruder in Her Bed; Brother Gives Unique Warning

While making my rounds of the right wing blogs this morning, I spotted this headline (or a variation of it) on at least 3 of the blogs. As I watched the accompanying video, I was a little surprised to see that the victim was black. After all, this video is headline news on conservative right wing blogs which normally don’t show much concern for poor projects dwellers.

It didn’t take long for me to see why the video was making news on conservative blogs. About a minute into the video, the woman’s brother, Antoine, appears to give a stern warning to the intruder, who got away when Antoine confronted him in his sister’s bedroom.

I’m not ashamed to say that it bothers me when the news media seeks out blacks with poor dialect to highlight on the evening news. This type of news coverage minimizes the crime, and instead belittles and degrades poor urban blacks. But as long as there are right wing blogs eager to ridicule our people, this type of insulting news coverage will continue.

    I saw this yesterday and I was damn near squawking at work!! “Hide yo kids, hide yo wife, hide yo husband, they rapin e’rybody!” :dead:

    But it’s true though, the media will look for the least informed, unpolished, uneducated, etc. person to put on tv and the fact that it’s a black community is the reason why I think mainstream media is picking it up. It has absolutely nothing to do with the real story, the lady being attacked, but to show blacks in a negative light.

    @spongebob I agree if you wanna do hoshyt do it, but I am kinda scared that this “sex tape” will backfire on her. I still feel like the stigma of being a black woman doing hoshyt is weighed more heavily than white women. I know people may argue Karrine Stephans capitalized on her hoshyt, but I still feel a certain kinda way about it.

    Don’t blame white folk for shaming “us”, blame US for giving them ammunition. We give racist people SO much ammunition as it relates to the “image” of black folk.

    The saddest thing is that THEY had NO idea that they’re ignorant and as sad as it sounds, I think WE should continue reporting these images and WE should continue to comment on how ignorant and embarrassing it is, maybe these 25 year old WOMEN will think twice before fighting with a chick in the middle of the street while their babies watch for fear that they’ll end up on youtube, blasted by the BLACK community!

    I don’t really care what the white community thinks of us… I’m more bothered by the fact that we don’t think enough of each other.

    Sometimes people need to be embarrassed into making a change because as strange as it sounds and as unfortunate as it is, the Obama’s aren’t resonating anything positive for some, so when your “norm” is buffoonery, you don’t really KNOW it until someone outside of your typical socialization informs you of that fact.

    I’ve never seen a news story told this way. Clearly this was shown to highlight ignorance. Anyone with two brain cells can tell that the objective is not in the attempted rape, but in the showcasing of poorly educated, low income people. Stereotyping. The real black community in the raw. I Remember Oprah telling a story of when she was in her early days as a news anchor. She said she didn’t make it because when she would arrive on stories where a black woman may be wearing curlers and a scarf, she would pull her to the side and say ” Hey maybe you want to fix your hair a little” This was because she cared how we looked to the larger audience.

    KrayZKat says:

    I wish black people would quit worrying about how “WE” look to everyone else. I’m so sick of it. Does anyone else care how THEY look to the “larger audience?” Are the people making assumptions better than us? Anyone with two brain cells would know that we are how many deep and that this brother doesn’t represent us nor all of our communities. There are communities of wealthy black people. We are the only race of people thinking we have to “represent” for the rest of us.

    We’ve been off the plantation how many years? What about the so called intelligent brothers and sisters we see on TV. I guess they don’t represent us – only the ones we deem “ignorant.” Why are we going to be “embarrased” behind someone else’s supposed “ghetto” attitude? That makes no sense. Sorry for the rant, but it’s high time black people quit tip-toeing around the plantation and quit being so concerned about what other people think as though they are superior to you.

  182. 182
    KrayZKat says:

    @Carrington – we can be on our best behavior acting like good little Negros are supposed to and racist will continue to be racist. Are we to blame for their sense of superiority and ignorance? Think about it. What kind of idiot looks at a group of people and generalizes about that group? Isn’t that considered ignorant, stupid, unintelligent? What about the images of “poor white trash?” Do you hear them say, “Oh, we better be careful before others think we are all like this.” These are the people we hold in such high esteem. Do you ever watch, “Most Daring?” and see the idiocy of how some of those white folks behave? I think people fail to understand that if “ignorant, poor, ghetto” blacks represent us as a whole group, then “Oprah, Dr. Ben Carson, and all the other “good Negros” represent us as well, right?

  183. 183
    Carrington says:

    @KrayZKat,

    You DID read the part where I said, “I don’t really care what the white community thinks of us… I’m more bothered by the fact that we don’t think enough of each other.”, right?

  184. 184
    KrayZKat says:

    @Carrington, yes, I did read that, and you are right, we don’t think enough of each other, but we don’t put that energy in the right places. It’s not our place to tell other black people how they are to conduct themselves or how to wear their hair or how they are to talk in order that “WE” don’t look bad. Can you imagine a white reporter walking over to another white person with missing teach, dirty t-shirt, smelly, greasy hair, and a lack of command for the English language, and tells tehm, “Hey, you better clean yourself up so that you don’t make us all look bad. What is the world gonna think about us white people?” They don’t do that because they don’t generalize their own people the way we generalize ours. I wish we would “think enough of each other” in ways other than worrying about how we are perceived by yt. JMO. No shade.

  185. 185
    KrayZKat says:

    I’m typing way too fast. Excuse the errors.

  186. 186
    scorpio says:

    @ Krazy Kat…
    Unfortunately we as a people dont have the luxury of being individuals the way white people do, in the bigger picture. Simply put, we don’t have the power to successfully turn the media’s head into another direction, yes we have made our success stories in the strides that we have made, but just imagine if no one had the full video of Mrs. Sherrod speech at the NAACP meeting the other week. Fox news would have totally crafted the story about that woman that they wanted. As for YT, You can have trailer trash and you can have the wall street worker, no one ever connects the two because trailer trash would not have been highlighted in a news story the way this attempted rape victim and her family were. With us you only get two images, the extremely wealthy and the down and out poor, the whole middle class of the everyday working mother and father raising their kids going to football practice and baking cookies gets missed. Then we don’t help the situation by always willing to appeal to the lowest common denominator as our images. We are the only people that our so willing to constantly show our women as over sexualized gyrating pole twirlers, men tossing dollar bills and throwing up bottles of champagne. I don’t see any other ethnicity so willing to just constantly allow their imagines to be over and over again be put out that way. Just listen at the music, it’s gotten to the point of singing about “the make up bag” What?

  187. 187
    Carrington says:

    @ KrayZKat

    It’s not our place to tell other black people how they are to conduct themselves or how to wear their hair or how they are to talk in order that “WE” don’t look bad.
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    We can end this right there.
    So, if WE don’t own the right to demand that WE do better, then just who is it that should be able to do that, and for that, does it get done at all if we’re tip-toeing around ignorance within our OWN damn communities “minding our business”?
    That thought process is exactly WHY so many ignorant black people don’t KNOW that they’re ignorant or dont’ have an ounce of shame about their ignorance <– because those who KNOW better are too concerned about their IMMEDIATE surroundings to be concerned with the ignorance 10 feet away as if they can't be touched by it.
    That's why crack dealers are able to sell crack and continue to live within the same community he/she helps to destroy and nobody says a word about it <– because we don't feel like we own the right to demand you not destroy our fathers, our mothers, our brothers and sisters, our cousins, even our children at some point.
    The same crack dealer who doesn't know any better sells drugs in the SAME neighborhood his mother has to walk to the store in, then when some clown clocks her on top of the head, he brings that $20 straight to him, and nobody has a clue – but he's too dumb to realize it!
    I'm sorry, but I feel like I have the right to demand that MY people do better and if you see MY son in the streets and he's doing wrong, tell him! Tell ME! Shout it from the mountain tops! Isn't that what MLK's dream was, uplifting his people? If he felt the way you feel, nobody but the Kings would be able to eat at McDonald's today… the rest of us would have to fend for ourselves.
  188. 188
    KrayZKat says:
    @Scorpio and Carrington – How in the name of God are we going to be responsible for a people 120 million strong? Demand that we do better? According to whose terms? You demand better for your children. You cannot demand anything from another adult. We CANNOT control another person’s actions, period. Also, who carries the measuring stick for what is acceptable or what isn’t? This man is no criminal.
    You know what? I don’t see Antoine as being the “problem” with some in the black community. I see uppity blacks that look down their noses at anyone they deem “unsuitable” to represent the black race as more dangerous. Why? Because they have been thoroughly brainwashed to believe that blacks should live by an unrealistic standard no one else on the planet has to live by. That, in itself, is utterly ridiculous. If only some black people got that concept.
    Again, why would we single out a segment of blacks and say their behavior is a representation of us all, yet successful blacks are not? That does not logically make sense. People talk about our images. Hey, I have one. Blacks, not whites, hold other blacks to a standard that is impossible to live by. We don’t have the luxury of being individuals? Are you kidding me? Newsflash! We ARE individuals.
    Carrington, you mentioned drug dealers? Calling out criminal activity is one thing. The last time I check, Antoine was not a criminal. People are always spouting, “Don’t judge” yet those very people are the ones with their noses up in the air talking about other blacks who don’t measure up to their expectation.
    I’m going to suggest you read a book called, “Slavery: The African American Psychic Trauma.” One of the questions it asks is: This book was recommended by someone else on the Internet. It talks about this very subject and how blacks have been bamboozled into believe that we all must “represent” because we don’t have the priviledge of being ourselves. That whole mindset is the same ones the racist use. If we have to be held to another standard, everyone else should too because we don’t live on this planet alone. We make of 12% of the population for crying out loud.
    I’m all for EVERYONE being the best they can be, but I feel that with this whole “we gotta do better” mentality that is so pervasive within our psyche, I don’t hold out much hope. We will just agree to disagree.
  189. 189
    KrayZKat says:
    Sorry for the rant, but I wanna add something else. Many blacks see Antoine as representing the “worst” of us and many feel he leaves a bad impression of blacks on the world. We are judging a group of people based on certain individuals (in this case, Antoine). WE call them low-lives, ignorant, ghetto, etc. So is that any different than a racist, one who feels superior to people based on skin color, who believe all blacks are inferior? To me, racists judge people based on skin color and not behavior. Every black in this world could be brilliant scientists and there are people who would STILL believe you’d be inferior to them because they don’t see individuals, they see RACE. What’s the difference between them and some blacks who believe the same?
    What I’m saying is this. It really has nothing to do with how whites see us. We as a people within ourselves should have by now stopped stripping our beauty and intelligence, it use to be there when our grandparents came along and some of our parents. I watch old episodes of Soul Train on Centric and I’m amazed at how classy the people looked and they were tasteful going out to have a nice time to dance to the music on TV. Those images are watchable to this day. When you see photos of blacks during the Harlem Renaissance look at how tasteful it is. Now juxtaposed that next to the images of the news story, girl with pink braids, dude with hair all over the place, screaming at the camera bareley understandable. It’s not even just this news story, many times you can be just out and about and will run across young kids acting up all for no reason. What happened to the thoughts of If my parents saw me out and about acting as if I was raised by dogs how embarassed would they be. I don’t see Filipinos, Chinese, Japanese, Latinos, and all the rest being shown on TV the way we get shown. Yes we have parts of our culture that has to live in public housing, but just because you live there doesn’t mean you have to show your ass, especially when the news crew shows up, something inside should already know the news crew is here, and they really aren’t all that interested in Shay Shay’s apartment being broken into. Let me beat them at their own game and speak into the camera intelligently, had Antoine done that, then I bet the news crew would have then said, oh, we aren’t going to air this because it’s not black enough for us..” Hollywood Shuffle” comes to mind. This is why we don’t see trailer trash. I’m not disagreeing with what is being said about we should not be tip toeing around, but at the same time, it’s time for us to eradicate the anything goes attitude that we’ve adopted in this past twenty five years. Remember when BET had to pull Hot Ghetto Mess from it line up? Again, that anything goes attitude had crept into the broadrooms of BET a programming company that shows it programming all around the world, if it wasn’t for the sponsors pulling out, we would have been watching some serious mess every night. I never will forget in the 90’s I went to London on a trip, at the time Jerry Springer was a big program here in the USA, we all now what Jerry Springer’s show was about in its hay day, just about every English kid that I hung out with thought of young black Americans as Jerry Springer guest. I couldn’t believe it, I became conscious then that we have to think outside of our immediate surroundings and be aware that what we do goes global. I see it nowadays on these court shows all you see is black folk after black folk, in front of the judge talking about a bunch of trash mess, and we don’t even want to get strated on Maury Povich. Again I’m not saying we should be walking around thinking don’t do this, don’t do that concerned about what other people are thinking, but some of the stuff that I see shouldn’t even be crossing our minds to do, just out of basic decency.
    I’m more interested in the thought process that you can’t be re-directed just because you’re grown! The people who enforced the rules that MLK marched against were GROWN folk, and they were grown folk when they were forced to change their outlook/views on black people. Some got it, some didn’t.
    Tell that woman/man who decides to go back to school at 40 years old that nobody can teach them anything because they’re grown. There are people who voted for Barack Obama who had a negative stereotype of blacks as a whole, but they opened their grown assed eyes to a man like Barack Obama because HE spoke to their grown a$$es and they saw a need for “change”.
    Real talk: We shouldn’t lose faith in continuing to “pull up” our people just because they’ve reached the age of 21… it’s never too late and I don’t apologize for not doing my part to point out ignorance, I don’t care how long it’s been since you reached 21.
    YOUR thought process is the one that’s going to keep black people ignorant. Do you and “mind your business” as you seem to be suggesting, but as long as I have a son who has to be a black man, I’m speakin up.
    @Scorpio – I grew up during the old Soul Train times. In fact, my best friend was a dancer on one of the episodes. Yes, those were different times all together. It’s the pre-crack/post-crack era. This isn’t the same world I grew up in. Back then, I never heard blacks talk down about each other (I’m not saying they didn’t), but we seemed to be a more cohesive group. Maybe it’s because we were born or grew up during the Civil Right’s movement when black people stuck together. Parents raised their children with morals and values. Enter the crack age. Parents stopped instilling those values and now we have the fall out from it.
    With that said, every generation had it’s “outcast.” You are probably too young to remember, but I’m sure you’ve heard of hippies. During the 60s, they talked about sex, drugs, and Rock N Roll. People looked at them the way some people look at Antoine and his family.
    Scorpio, you’re right – the media doesn’t portray other groups the way they portray blacks, but there’s a agenda behind it. Books have been written on this very subject. On the contrary, they show a lot of trailer park whites. Have you ever sat down and watched some of those “caught on tape” shows like “Most Darling.” They show the most low life, baffoon acting white folks they can. What about “Girls Gone Wild?” The issue is THEY don’t generalize their own. The ones they portray low life are an “exception to the rule” whereas the “Antoines” are the norm. That’s the message they’ve tried to preach since the inception of TV (Amos and Andy, Beulah, Stephin Fetchit, etc.)
    I agree with you about the “everything goes TV,” but as long as black folks continue to support these mindless shows, they will continue to play them. So many blacks will complain about the Antoines of the world, yet sit down and take in hours of foolish reality shows. When are we going to take a stand against that? You mentioned Jerry Springer. The way I remember JS’s show was that it featured the worst of everyone regardless of race, and I sure saw a lot of low class white folks on that show – the same as Maury’s show. Now those white people in London that believe Springer’s show represented the millions of blacks in the world are completely ignorant of the black race – actually humanity itself because anyone with any modicum of common sense should know that what you see on TV is often exaggerated for ratings. Now since they thought blacks were like what JS portrayed, is it your responsibility to dispell their stupidity? Why do we always have to take on the task of proving to idiots that “all us colored folks ain’t like the ones you see on TV.” The best way we can fight it is the not watch shows that continuously portray us in a negative manner. We have to demand it.
    Anyway, I do hear where you are coming from, but I just believe Antoine was being Antoine and passionate about what had happened to his sister. A lot of people put down “ghetto” folks, but many innovations have come right out of the ghetto.
    @Carrington – you are completely missing my point. You’re right – some got it, some didn’t and they still don’t have it. Volition is the key word here. I’m not saying that just because someone is an adult that they can’t learn, but they have to WANT to learn. If you want the task of going around correcting every person you think is an “ignorant black,” then you have a long task ahead of you. I’m not saying that we cannot teach, but people have to be teachable. If we go at people with this holier than thou attitude, how are we going convince them of anything if you are judging them. I hear people holler all the time, “Don’t judge me.” But I guess it’s okay to judge someone if we all collective agree they deserve it, right?
    In order to make America great, shouldn’t everyone be concerned about ignorance regardless of color? My way of thinking is going to keep black people ignorant? Carrington, I hate seeing anyone ignorant. Why do whites, Asians, Latinos, Indians get a pass for being ignorant, yet blacks have to be the Pied Pipers of the universe? Do you see the double standard we have put on our own people? Madness, I tell you. Straight madness. We live in a world full of ignorant people, and it’s sad that for centuries, blacks only see themselves as such.
    @Carrington and Scorpio – If only we could harness this much passion at changing the world as we are at one brother who so many blacks are ashamed of, we could take our rightful places in society. We always so worried about bullsh*t.
    @ Krazy Kat
    I have to say the exchange with you has been thought provoking. I will definetly began to stop thinking in the I’am so embarassed mentality when folks are acting up, from now on it will be easier to see and say when someone is acting ignorant as just that person is acting ignorant and is not a representation of us as a whole. I do realize that sometime we are thinking things that no one else is probably thinking. It just makes me mad that sources like Fox News, and this particular news story keeps getting churned out into the public domain by melicious news conglomerates. And you are right, lots of things have come from the ghetto. Motown music came from the ghetto, just to name one thing, and to this day that music is world renowned, never duplicated and never will be. Dianne Ross, Smokey Robinson all form poor areas. We all just have to be more diligent in polishing those concrete roses. The thing that got me going was that some of the other comments that were posted were seeing amusement in this news story and it was comment after comment. Someone actually said Antoine should have a Reality Show. I’m so sick of the I love New Yorks, Flava of Love, Chad Ochocinco type shows. I was like Sandra and actually thought it was some sort of parody it was so jarringly put together. Just Sloppy. Anyway your point is taken.
    @Scorpio – thanks, hun. I enjoy having good conversations where the exchange is respectful and informative.
    I really do understand that the media makes a point to make black people look bad. Fox News is one of the biggest culprit. We all know their agenda and they don’t hide it.
    You are so right about Motown. Good music never dies, and decades after it is released, it’s still the best around. I’m glad that the younger generation is hip to Motown and old school music. There’s none like it.
    Anyway, it’s been a pleasure, Scorpio :-P
    A few days late responding in this post, but nevertheless….
    I did find it comical from a viewer’s perspective. It was clearly entertaining. Did I also find it outlandish? Yes, I felt that way too.
    Two main points: The media isn’t entirely to blame for our portrayal of buffoonery. We are ultimately responsible for the way we carry ourselves and perform. *No BAIT, NO BITE*
    Secondly, when people are outraged or disturbed by something,re- posting it for someone else to see doesn’t solve the problem. Aren’t you then providing a larger outlet for the attention to the mess? Try posting the news without that video. That is where the true essence of the crime is captured.
