Celebs Out & About: Halle Berry, Nicki Minaj, Queen Latifah

No, actress Halle Berry doesn’t have a new man (that we know of). She was spotted snuggled up with actor Olivier in between takes on the set of their flick “Dark Tide”, shooting on location in Cape Town, South Africa. Martinez is the ex-boyfriend of Australian pop star Kylie Minogue and Berry recently split from her model boyfriend Gabriel Aubry.  Photo by PacificCoastNews.com

Not even Today’s Black Woman magazine can make cartoonish rapper Nicki Minaj look respectable. They get an ‘A’ for effort though.  Photo: TGJ

Dwyane Wade & Chris Paul Crush the Dreams of Little Children

This is an interesting way to teach little children to pass the ball instead of hogging it during a game.

A blogger filmed 6′-4″ Miami Heat star Dwyane Wade aggressively blocking the shots of little NBA wannabes during a youth basketball clinic at the infamous Rucker Park on Friday.

After he blocks the shot, Wade and his BFF Chris Paul, of the New Orleans Hornets, then team up to taunt the shawties.

Blogger Gus Garcia-Roberts was not amused by the spectacle of two giants ganging up on youngsters:

DWade apparently likes a little negative reinforcement in his basketball instruction… because he had a little fun with these kids by viciously rejecting their shots… taunting them… and (sort of) dunking on them.

Yeah, it seemed to all be in good fun… at least to him (and Chris Paul). Why not ask the kid who just walked off after the second Wade rejection? He looked thrilled. Read More…

I’m not sure what Wade and Paul thought they were accomplishing. But publicly shaming and posterizing small children can’t be good for their pride or dignity. Watch the body language of the rejected kids as they crawl off the court after DWade plays big bully.

A Smiling Paula Cook Spotted Attending Church

Pictures have surfaced of Antwaun Cook’s wife, Paula Cook, smiling as she attended church with her sons Christian and Jackson yesterday in Charlotte, NC.

Is there anyone left who doesn’t believe that Paula, a 36-year-old school teacher, and her estranged husband Antwaun, conspired with Fantasia to boost the ratings of Fantasia’s reality show?

Still, Paula and her attorney, Tamela Wallace, reacted with surprise at the photos of Fantasia and Antwaun’s reunion in a park on Friday. They hint at filing a lawsuit against Fantasia for “alienation of affection” — or depriving Mrs. Cook of the affection of her husband.

Wallace tells People magazine:

It’s that kind of brazen behavior that Mrs. Cook has had to endure for the last 11 months, until June of this year. This is something that has caused her emotional distress, pain, anguish.

She wanted nothing more than to have a happy family with her husband and her children. And she’s not been able to do that.

The only mistake she made was marrying a man who Ms. Barrino felt like she was entitled to have. She is having to defend her marriage, when she didn’t ask for this.

Something tells me that “alienation of affection” suit will never be filed.

Religion: Outrage as Obama Backs Controversial NY Mosque

U.S. president Barack Obama’s statements backing the construction of a Muslim mosque near the site of the World Trade Center disaster is being met with outrage from proponents of the planned project.

At a dinner Friday celebrating the start of the Islamic holy month of Ramadan, Mr. Obama said Muslims have a right, as a matter of religious freedom, to build a religious center near Ground Zero. “Muslims have the same right to practice their religion as everyone else in this country,” he said to applause. Some critics wonder why Obama felt the need to interject himself into the mosque controversy in the first place. Others say Obama’s statements will increase the opposition to proposed mosques everywhere.

“It will galvanize their desire for resistance to the mosque,” said Pastor William Rench of Calvary Baptist Church, next door to another proposed mosque site in Temecula, CA. It confirms in their minds the idea that Mr. Obama seems to be more accommodating to the Islamic world than he is for the Christian representation in America.

Meanwhile, Republicans seized on Obama’s comments as evidence that he is woefully out of touch with the rest of America.

In an interview Sunday, Gary Berntsen, a New York Republican Senate candidate and a former senior Central Intelligence Agency officer, said a mosque near Ground Zero would become a national security risk.

“[Obama] missed the point that people found this offensive because it’s very, very close to Ground Zero,” he said. “That mosque will become a magnet for militants. They will be drawn there in large numbers, and they will seek to impose themselves on that mosque…” Read More…

While Muslim leaders praised Mr. Obama’s support of the proposed NYC mosque, proponents picked up on Obama’s lack of sensitivity for the families of the 3,000 victims of September 11.

Rev. Gregory S. Whelton, a pastor at St. John’s United Church of Christ in Sheboygan, said he believes Muslims have the right to build mosques anywhere, but he feels Ground Zero should be off limits because of the circumstances of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.

“To do it in light of what has happened, I’m not sure I would agree with that,” he said. “But as far as their right to do it, absolutely.”
