Who Knew Dr. Laura Was Racist?

Controversial author and talk radio therapist Dr. Laura Schlessinger showed her true colors during a racist rant against a caller yesterday.

When a sista called into her radio show to complain about her white neighbors’ racist reactions to her interracial marriage to a white man, Dr. Laura showed no compassion or understanding. When the sista mentioned the use of the n-word, Dr. Laura went off.

“Black guys use it all the time,” she said. “Turn on HBO, listen to a black comic and all you hear is ‘nigger, nigger, nigger.’ I don’t get it. If anybody without enough melanin says it, it’s a horrible thing, but when black people say it, it’s affectionate.”

When Dr. Laura welcomed the same caller back from a commercial break, the caller, who is black, informed Dr. L that she was insulted by her casual use of the n-word.

Dr. Laura immediately jumped on the defensive. “Oh, then I guess you don’t watch HBO or listen to any black comedians?,” she seethed.

She went even further by including Barack Obama in her rant: “Yeah, we’ve got a black man that’s president and we’ve got more complaining about race than ever. I mean, I think that’s hilarious.”

Dr. Laura then attacked the caller for not manning up, telling her she’s got a chip on her shoulder. The call quickly went South with Dr. Laura spewing more racist hate and abruptly disconnecting the caller.

She then made a sweeping comment about interracial marriages in general, saying “Don’t marry out of your race if you’re that hypersensitive about color.”

She later apologized once the sh*t hit the fan.

people are gonna test them just because they’re an interracial couple. it comes with the territory. just because your husband is white, it doesn’t mean that you are going to be around nice white people all the time. in fact, it probably means those “decent” white people you thought were ok are gonna start showing their *ss. after a while, you just gotta get over some things.

Frankly, I am tired of hearing about racism and how offended black people get wen other races use the word nigga. Black people need to stop using it PERIOD; there is no freedom of speech about it. IT IS OPPRESSING and MLK & others fought for blacks to be respected. When I went outside of the country, I heard people, who don’t know the history of if, using it. WHY because they heard it on a CD and thought it was OK to say.

When I hear teenager using it on the subway/bus fill with people, I am baffled. I think about how IGNORANT/UNEDUCATED they sound.

Dr. Laura was really feeling herself this day. Is this a radio show? Wish I could have called in that morning. The lady she was talking to should have put her in her place on her own show. GM. I see everyone is awake this TGIF and as much as race issues are still alive we can comment intelligently. Dr. Laura just goes to prove that ppl snap and say what they really feel when they are cornered, but it only shows ones true colors. As much as I can’t stand Rush Limbutt I do listen to his radio show a few minutes a week, keep your enemies close.

I just listened to the sound bite…yeah Laura was out of order. Laura was not even trying to let the lady on the phone talk. She needed a muzzle, then for her to hang up on her caller, what type of radio host is she? Just to hang up when she got mad, and for the record the caller was not the one that raised her voice first. I noticed that alot of white people have become bolder with their comments. Having a black president has only revealed how many racists still exsist.

@SNOOTY, I say that because people stop just short of gawking at us. Seriously, it’s a black woman and a white man. You would think we were aliens. But, it’s not just from white people. Racism is still very alive and well- let’s not be misinformed here.

I think the difference between today and decades ago is that i has now become taboo to be racist as there are may caucasians and african-americans who do not see color or black vs. white.

I work in a predominantly white area where mostly everyday people are throwing me the side-eye, as of to say “what are you dong here – you cant possibly be this educated”.

I’ve even had people ask me ” Are you from Africa” and “Why do you speak english so good” @ MY JOB !

( p.s.- about that second question – it almost killed me not to correct that little old lady’s grammar but i digress….)

But even with racism being very alive and well, I do my best to act as it does not exist. I cant walk around mad for mistakes being made many many years ago. I believe African Americans should conform to their surroundings ( while staying true to themselves) with the pre-concieved notion that you are being judged from the second you walk into the room and to think that you are not being judged bc there is no such thing as racism is just ignorance.

And yes if you are going to be in an interracial couple you have to have a very thick skin and know when to step in and say hey you are going to far when the jokes/stereotypes start. In addition, you have to know that when some caucasian people make these comments its not bc they are racist it is bc they very well be uncomfortable and they believe that making jokes can ease the situation.

As far as the N-word I let ignorant people use it because it is an ignorant word. I don’t use it myself per se in or out of my job – I believe it makes people sound uneducated. Black, white, blue, green or grape juice purple – NO ONE should being using that word including Dr. Laura.

And NO Dr. Laura – it is not a term of affection or endearment so sit your racist self down.

We live in a country where people will get on the radio and speak like that to another person just because she is married outside of her race. What I don’t understand is at what point did WE get a patent on a specific word? If the word means THAT much and can evoke that much in us as a people when someone “else” says it, then how CAN we justify using it as a term of endearment?

It’s NOT hot, I hate that word, always have and always will. Even when I was a teenager, it was a word I chose not to use. I’ll call you all kinds of mother f*ckers, but that’s one word, I just can’t get with.

I experienced the most reverse racism from blacks because I was not dark enough and because i spoke correct english not white proper english. I wont even talk about the hair pulling and bullying. That is a topic for another time I am getting heated all over again..

I dealt with the same thing growing up. It’s an entirely different dynamic growing up around all black folks when they know you’re mixed and lightskinned. Funny thing is I have mostly my mother’s(black) features but when you put a light tint on them I guess they aeren’t perceived the same.

What I don’t understand is, why are some folks so damn pressed to belong or be accepted? Be comfortable in your skin, love who you are and keep it moving. You will not be liked or accepted by everybody.

Its tough growing up in the black community when you are light skin and your hair is different.. I feel sorry for mixed kids sometimes because it can be tough.. I mean its different now because there are more interracial couples then when I was growing up…

I went to Catholic school until Junior High and then to a predominantly white high school it took a lot of adjusting lets just say that on one had i was not black enough and on the other I was not completely white…..

I’ve mentioned here before of a man by the name of Tim Wise (Google him) that discusses, in detail, white supremacy and racism. He’s a white man. He’ll breaks it down. He said blacks have no idea how it works.

Racism is about power. White have an infrastructure built for them and by them. He said that many blacks don’t understand this concept. When you have power, you have the ability to control. Prejudice is another thing all together. Blacks cannot be racist.

Here’s a sample:

When a group of people has little or no power over you institutionally, they don’t get to define the terms of your existence, they can’t limit your opportunities, and you needn’t worry much about the use of a slur to describe you and yours, since, in all likelihood, the slur is as far as it’s going to go. this woman will never apologize. for she does not have too. her audience is the same one that listens to rush limbaugh. the more racist commentary she spews, the bigger her audience. they also have their own group of advertisers for these shows. Unlike Imus in the morning, he was broad casted on a liberal network that appealed to more liberal viewers. The other day, a friend of mine visited me in the lobby of my dorm just to chat while her laundry was drying. As we were chatting, two young freshmen came by. One of the 2 boys wanted to ‘talk’ to my friend (as in date). She asked him how old they were, and both of the boys replied 18. My friend and I both laughed hysterically because we are both 22 years old..
After my friend left, the young men were still hanging around and one wanted to know how he could gain her interest.
The first thing I told him to do was to pull up his pants! He asked why, and then said he liked saggin ‘ his pants. I told him to come over to my computer and spell the word saggin’. Then I told him to write the word saggin ‘ backwards..

I told him the origin of that look was from centuries ago. It was the intent of slave owners to demoralize the field workers by forbidding them to wear a belt as they worked in the fields or at any other rigorous job. In addition, men in prison wore their pants low when they were ‘spoken for’. The other reason their pants looked like that was they were not allowed to have belts because prisoners were likely to try to commit suicide. And, saggin’ pants prevents you from running.

We as young Black people have to be the ones to effect change. We are dying. The media has made a mockery of the Black American. Even our brothers and sisters from Africa don’t take us seriously. Something as simple as pulling up your pants and standing with your head held high could make the biggest difference in the world’s perception of us. It is time to do right by ourselves. We need to love and embrace each other. No one is going to do that for us.
It all comes down to perception. What people perceive is what reality to them is.. We have to change not only the media’s perception of us, but we need to change our perception of ourselves.
Remember all eyes are on you Black Man. All eyes are on you Black Woman. All eyes are on your Black Child. People point the finger at us and expect us to engage in negative and illegal activities, to manifest loud, boisterous behavior, to spend our hard earned money in their stores, buying goods we don’t need, or really want. We have allowed not only the media, but the government and the world to portray us as a ‘sub-culture. ‘ They have stripped our culture down to the point where the image of Black people is perpetuated as rappers, athletes, drug users, and consumers of junk food, expensive tennis shoes, expensive cars, expensive TVs, cell phones and not investing in homes for our families.

To all our Black Men : It’s time to stand up. There are billions of Black Women
who want to do nothing more than worship the ground that you walk on.
We are so in love with your potential. We want to have your back, we want to love, support and cherish every ounce of your being. But with that you have to show that you are willing to be the head of our households. You have to prove yourselves worthy of our submission. We need you to be hard working…Not a hustler. We need you to seek higher education, to seek spirituality. We need you to stand! And trust us; we will have your back. We know that it gets hard. We know you get weary. Trust and believe that there is nothing that a Black Man and a Black Woman can’t handle with GOD on our side.
To all our Black Women : It is also time for you to stand up. It is time for you to stop using your bodies as your primary form of communication. It is time to be that virtuous woman that Proverbs spoke of. You cannot sit by the wayside while your men are dying by the masses. You are the epitome of Black Love. It starts within you. You need to speak with conviction to let not only our Black Men know, but the world, that you are the Mothers of this world. You are so powerful. You are so beautiful. You need to love and embrace every blessing God has given you physically, emotionally and spiritually.
For all our Black Children : We need to love them. We need to teach them. We need to stand up for them. We need to protect them. We need to show them that there are no ‘get rich quick’ schemes. We need to tell them that they WILL die trying
if they submit to a life of crime and deceit.
We need to teach our children that no one will love them the way we can.
And being a basketball player, a rapper, or a drug dealer is not reality. It’s not realistic and only a small percentage of people ever make it as a rapper or professional athlete. We need to teach our children that we can be more than rappers and athletes. We can be the owners of these sports teams. We can be the CEO’s of OUR fortune 500 companies. We need to believe in literacy.
