Armed Guards to patrol Unemployment Offices

The state of Maryland has hired armed guards to patrol all unemployment offices as the end of unemployment benefits for thousands of unemployed residents draws near.

No specific incidents prompted the action said Department of Workforce Development spokesman Marc Lotter, according to 6News’ Norman Cox.

Lotter said the agency is merely being cautious due to the approach of an early-December deadline when thousands of Indiana residents could see their unemployment benefits end after exhausting the maximum 99 weeks provided through multiple federal extension periods.

“Given the upcoming expiration of the federal extensions and the increased stress on some of the unemployed, we thought added security would provide an extra level of protection for our employees and clients,” he said.

Meanwhile, U.S. President Barack Obama has no events on his schedule today after non-stop campaigning to try and stem the Democratic bloodletting that will occur when millions of disenchanted voters go to the polls tomorrow.

A new Gallup poll finds an unprecedented enthusiasm gap favoring Republicans in the midterm elections.

In a recent CNN poll, 75% of Americans say things are going badly — the highest percentage since the question was first asked in the mid-1970s.

I find it crazy that folks blame Obama for things that were clearly in the works before he entered office. Bush made a mess and God help the person who has to fix it!!

    @ sugaplum

    exactly. Maryland where?

also, i’m not sure how i feel about this. i have lost my job before and only got a few months of unemployment insurance. i feel sorry for them, but the reality is, plenty of people are hiring. lower your standards and find a job.

some people just act like some jobs are beneath them. and this is something obama cannot change.

If John McCain was elected as our president two years ago, we would still be dealing with this horrific economy. I refuse to place blame on Obama or Bush as it is the people that work FOR them that have and continue to jack this country up.

I am not sure where the extra money would come from but I can only hope they offer another extension as these people are not going to be able to maintain without any money.

    Terrible.

I feel so bad for all these unemployed people who have mortgages and kids to feed. Unemployment is their last hope and having that cut off will drive people to some desperate measures. I wouldn’t be surprised if somebody cracks under the pressure and does some drastic mess. So sad what the economy has become.

Unless you are applying for a job in your field don’t put all your degrees on a resume’. Some employers are afraid to hire you if you have too many skills. They know you won’t be staying.

trust me. i understand. if i was trying to work at mcdonalds. i wouldn’t put any of my real jobs on there. but a check is a check. i just see thousands of jobs being advertised everyday and it baffles me how its the blame of the govt.

if u have skills that people are hiring for, great. if u don’t, maybe u should look into another field. or try the 7-11 midnight shift.

u cant change what fields are profitble now. that evolves in time. 100 years ago being a blacksmith could have made u rich … now? not so much.

It happens all the time now. Many times a new post is not the first post we see.
@ajonesy, ppl don’t realize that sometimes you have to dumb down if you want a steady paycheck. Getting hired to do something that you did not ever think you would do is better than not getting hired at all.
