Celebs Out & About: Esperanza Spalding
Grammy Best New Artist, Esperanza Spalding, was spotted at Japan’s Narita International Airport early this morning. The 26-year-old jazz bassist was mobbed by paparazzi as she made her way through the airport. Spalding became an overnight sensation when she snatched the Best New artist trophy from Justin Bieber, who was the odds on favorite.
Her surprise win over the 16-year-old teeny bopper signified an industry that has become wary of the cocky, overhyped “Baby” singer. The writing was on the wall. Rumors swirled back in January that a few female reporters were treated rudely by Justin at a press conference (I was asked not to provide details of the incident).
E’s win angered Justin’s Stans who caused a fracas online. Stans immediately attacked Esperanza’s Wikipedia page, changing her middle name from “Justin” to “quesadilla” and back to “Justin” again.
Before she boarded her flight to Japan, E flew to Hollywood, Florida (a suburb just North Miami) where she posed for a photoshot at The Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino.

Yes, I love her hair! Reppin’ for the naturals!!! Congrats on her win! Good to see that the Grammy’s didn’t turn in to a popularity contest….this year.
I’ll admit, I never heard of her before the Grammy’s.. But i’m sure glad she won.. She’s AMAZING!!
I like her hair to @ bnatural.
I heard of her before on some website last year. That’s good that an artist with talent. Hopefully her music will be played on radio & on tv since she is getting so much attention.
I am so glad she won. Go girl!!!!
@1 proberson07 I am jealous that you had the 1st comment. LOL
Thank heavens she won, I am so sick and tired of seeing Justin Beiber every damn where. He is some industry created teeny bopper for the tweens and that irks the ish out of me along with his horrible haircut.
She looks a lot younger in the JCPenny catalog shot? Glad she won
Thanks for this post, Sandra! Please do many more on Esperanza. I have been a supporter of her music for at least three years. This made my morning to see her so fresh faced and natural.
@Genia…whatever!
I honestly to this day still dont’ know who this girl is however good for her for taking this award which was a shock to everyone in the world i think. I would have assumed JB or even Drake would have got that reward. But clearly the Grammy’s aren’t showing favoritism anymore, they’re actually picking based on quality I guess because reviews for Esperanza have been all positive in regards to her music. I’ll look her up.
She’s not an overnight sensation. She’s been doing music for years and she deserved that grammy. She was on the Soul Train awards and she was one of the ones to do the tribute to Prince and she TORE IT DOWN!
So to hell with Justin Bieber, its about time the grammys recognized REAL MUSIC!
This girl is so naturaly pretty and her hair is just beautiful! Congrats to her on her Grammy!
