How do you feel about your man holding hands with his home boy?

It appears that Toronto Raptors teammates Leandro Barbosa, right, and Reggie Evans are more than just friends on and off the court. It’s a known fact that the NBA has its share of gay players hiding deep in the closet. And with attitudes being more favorable towards gays in society as a whole, it’s just a matter of time before a player rips the closet door off its hinges. In the case of Leandro and Reggie, it’s good to see manly men who aren’t afraid to show affection toward each other, even if they’re joking around.

I asked a manly man, who happens to be a celebrity, how he felt about a man holding hands with him, and he said: “I can’t get with that. If a man tries to hold my hand, I will pull back because I don’t like that. Don’t try to disrespect me with your energy. That’s gay.”

LOL you would think something like that. We must rise up. What my point is, is this. Our black community has developed these unrealistic ideas of men and women. For men it’s this overly masculinized image of hard, hard, hard no room to think or grow. Which is why downlow is the problem that it is. It’s impossible to fit into that image, then we wonder why our kids are left behind when they get into college, and all the other nationalities have had experiences such as traveling to foreign countries, or learning musical instruments, or whatever it happens to be outside of the box. All we can do is be black, stay in the same neighborhood, and die. For women it’s the girl that’s always talked about in the music lyrics, she’s on the pole, or shaking her rump ( shake it, like a salt shaker) I often wonder who is the girl that these songs are talking about, does she really exist? Of course I know she does in some instances, but I’m not thinking every black woman I see who likes to dance, or go to clubs, is the girl in the music lyrics. I do not live in Atlanta, but I know that there are many gay men there, some of them out, others in the closet, I think there’s nothing worse than a man with a girlfriend messing around with men on the backside, that’s horrible, but to suggest that two young black men can’t be jovial with each other doesn’t make sense. Now, it would be different if they were holding hands longingly, and affectionatly. Then yes I would say they are holding hands, but this here is clearly some joking, kiddin’ around type thing. I think everyone needs to get informed, and get educated especially if you are dating, but to keep sitting around making things up out of nothing doesn’t do anything but road blocks you in life. As a person who played basketball, football, and baseball from lil league to high school and then went on to play baseball in college I can say that there are times when you have to do things to break up the monotony. In high school my teammates and I would walk out onto the field instead of running,,,,and guess what we would do it in a straight line all of us holding hands. We weren’t holding hands to be gay, we were holding hands because we were brothers, we were in sync, unison, we were one, and boy was that alot more intimidating to opposing teams than us sprinting out trying to be imposing. Damn. I miss those days. I had brothers to hold me down. Getting old sucks…

I don’t know what the reason is for these two holding hands. However if they were secretly gay I doubt they’d do it in front of the camera. Despite what my worldly auntie says about society’s embrace. Some of us know otherwise.lol. In closing I say good for them. I truly miss having fun with my guys. p.s. I hold my grandpas hand when we hang out. He’s ambulatory, so there’s really no excuse for it. He tends to limp and sometimes stumble, I’m only comfortable knowing I have a hand on him. Id grab his arm instead of his hand, but he’s so fragile in certain places…and bruises easily so I hold his hand. Not that I watch my weight cuzz I don’t! I’m just saying my body doesn’t look like it looked when I played 3 sports. I would spend time in the mirror flexing, but not too much time! 3 minutes max. AL Boy did your high school NOT have powderpuff games, where the cheerleaders are the football players and the football players are the cheerleaders. These are not things that just gay men do. I don’t think to want your man/boyfriend/brother/ or whomever to not do things that are considered feminine is a INSANE request.

Why would I want my boyfriend to run around through the tulips holding hands with his best friend? It’s not okay. This is a gesture that is typically not done amongst males.

I think a lot of us are reaaaaally buying into the whole emasculated man thing and I’m not for it.

I’m not asking that he’s “hard”. I am asking that he doesn’t kiss his friend on the cheek, rub his knee, hold his hand, etc.

People want to crucify you for not accepting this type of behavior. It isn’t paranoia…it’s the fact that as I get older I see that the actions deemed appropriate for women are becoming blended and deemed acceptable behavior from men…and that’s not how it should be.

When you compare WM with BM be sure to state that as a whole their men are more effeminate…I don’t know about YOU but I rather a masculine man.

I agree! They are showing their friendship and are probably more comfortable with their own sexuality then a lot of people. To many young men think they have to be angry and aggressive to prove they are “straight” or a “real man”. This story is so much better to hear about because no one was injured or harmed by their hand holding. In other countries men kiss each other on the cheeks and lips (I think).

LOL with the baby and Wayne reference, but you are right in many European countries people do greet each other with two quick cheek to cheek kisses. It’s a form of happy to see one another.

If anyone is interested There’s a film by a famous Spanish director Pedro Almodovar called El Ley Del Deseo ( The Law of Desire) in the film there is a young Antonio Banderas who plays a gay character. This type of openess to the arts cannot exist in our community because we are so quick to shut ourselves down with all these phobias. Today Antonio Banderas is one of the biggest and most desirable actors around. No one thinks of him as Gay because he did this role. Now image if Larenz Tate or Taye Diggs did the same role.

@ Scorpio, you are right about Larenz or Taye. Look what happended to Will Smith in “Six Degress Of Seperation”, it was to believable, and he’s always being questioned/judged of whether he is or isn’t.
