1 Dead; 2 Officers Injured During Rowdy Urban Beach Weekend in Miami

Two Miami beach police officers were hospitalized early this morning after a police shootout erupted on a normally serene stretch of South beach. Miami Beach Police Sgt. Alejandro Bello told the Miami Herald newspaper that the officers’ injuries are not life-threatening. The shootout was one of two violent incidents that marred the annual “Urban Beach Week” festivities that draws thousands of young black people to the beaches from around the country.

In this riveting video shot by mkradio and uploaded to YouTube, a black SUV careens down a busy street hitting other cars as gunshots ring out just before 4 a.m. in the 100 block of 15th Street.

A man can be heard in the background saying two police officers shot at the SUV, stopping it at an intersection. As the video rolls, officers wearing black cautiously approach the vehicle from the front and driver’s side. “He crashed all the cars,” explains the narrator as the camera pans behind the SUV to show a line of cars stopped in the street. Just then, a hail of gunfire shatters the night air.

When the gunfire ceases, the narrator declares, “Ooh, they killed everyone [inside the car]!”

Detective Jenny Velazquez confirmed 1 man was dead and two police officers were receiving treatment at Mount Sinai Medical Center with unknown injuries.

A second shooting incident occurred in the 1300 block of Washington Avenue on Miami Beach. Velazquez said details remain sketchy and no injuries were reported in that incident. “Everything is very cloudy right now,” she said.

Multiple law enforcement agencies from around the state of Florida have converged on Miami Beach to help restore order during this weekend’s chaotic Urban Beach Week, also known as Black Beach week, part of the Memorial Day weekend spate of concerts, parties and events organized by promoters from as far away as New York and Atlanta.

Urban Beach week in South Florida traditionally sparks an exodus of whites from South Beach during the 3-day weekend.

Why do some of our people continuously cause chaos whenever they get together to have a good time? Seriously, they shouldn’t even have any “Black or Urban” beach weeks; putting an ‘African-American’ label on events like this just sets up black folks to look foolish when some sh!t pops off like this. @H-Town, but one thing we forget is what about the others that didn’t act a fool? For example, there might be a gathering of 100 black people at an event. Say two of them break out in a fight. WE point to those two and say, “You see. WE don’t know how to act” yet 98 others caused no trouble. It’s more of a class issue than a race issue.

Have you ever seen an episode of, “Most Daring,” or “World’s Dummest Criminals” or any show like that? It clear that PEOPLE, regardless of race, creed, or color, don’t know how to act. Yes, we unfairly get pointed out, yet we do the same. We perpetuate it. If every black in the world “behaved themselves” and acted like “good black people,” there are still people who would stereotype us. Blame the one stereotyping for being stupid enough to judge a whole group of millions based on the actions of a few. I’m tired of taking the blame for the stupidity of those who share my racial make up.

I agree wholeheartedly about today’s blacks vs. those of MLK’s era. WE were a unified people then. We had the MLK’s and the Malcolm’s to confront ignorance. Today’s generation doesn’t have any torch carriers because we are so willing to believe the lies. Also, I’ll be my first born that people have not changed. Back then, they had events and things got out of hand.

Just so you know Im open minded and don’t just read black blogs and the other races, namely whites are just as quick to say trailer trash, etc. So It’s not just something we do. I also know plenty of others who hate their race….look at Arnold’s mistress. It’s people saying she wanted so bad to be white she hates her own race/identity. So please….miss me with all that we always put our people down.

Those people who acted foolish don’t define me, but I’m not crazy enough to think that it won’t define me to others. I know how the media intentionally focuses on what we do wrong and less of what we do right to help shape society’s views on us. But let’s keep it real….we damn sure give them a lot of help! This is just another such gift.

I love who I am and probably know more about who I am and where I come from more than most. We are descended from royalty….hand picked by the Most High. We are not the trash the media portrays us to be. We are not the ones sucking the system dry on medicaid/welfare. I know this for a fact as I work for medicaid/medicare servicing multiple states and I get more calls from the other races than blacks. As far as helping me own. I donate time, money, clothing, etc and am in constant prayer over my people, so I dont just talk the talk I walk the walk.

H-Town, if you don’t think self-hatred/loathing is in high gear in our community, I don’t know what to say. Of course, there are some others who hate their racial identity. Many Asians want to look “Westernized.” Many dark-skinned nationalities hate their dark skin. It’s prevalent, but it affects us way more than others because we lack unity, and we make comments that cosign the thought of others. In other words, many of us think so poorly of our own people. What the media does, we perpetrate. We do it to ourselves.

I know white people who refer to other whites as “trailer trash” or “poor white trash,” but most of them think they don’t represent the “worst” of their race, yet black people are steadily thinking we do. What about the black people that don’t cause problems and are living normal, happy lives? Do we pay attention to them? The media doesn’t and neither do we.

So H-Town, what should the black race do? Are you to sit on the throne next to Jesus as the “idea” race to prove to others that “we aren’t like those other blacks?” We are to “behave ourselves” so that others will see that “we all don’t act like them?” I don’t give a rat’s behind what others think because if they think we “all act like the same way,” who is the ignorant one?” WE continue to perpetuate what others say about us.

I’m glad you know who you are and have pride in that. I wish more of us did, but my biggest issue is that we need to stop internalizing what others do and chalk it up to their bad behavior. That’s the point I’m trying to make.

You’re ridiculous. I have been to the Memorial day weekends IN MIMAI and have seen what’s going on with my own eyes and ears and you’re telling me I don’t know what I’m talking about? I’m telling you I’ve also been plenty of LARGE open to the public events similar to this one in other states. When there are a lot of kids without their parents and young black adults there are problems distinct to blacks. ie robbings, shootings, fights involving groups ect. This is NOT NORMAL BEHAVIOR. When I go to black social events that are private there is very seldom any problems. You are in denial.

I used to go down to Miami every Memorial weekend years ago but each year it become more crazy and ghetto. Just to clarify this type of behavior is prevalent to us young, black folk period! I can’t stand when people crywolf about it. This is why Buckhead was shutdown and many black nightclubs. White people act crazy too but they don’t have people continuously dying in gathering that suppose to be fun.

You don’t see Mardi Gras getting shut down, the Carribean Festival, etc. It is particularly the “young, urban hip hop events” that cause a bunch of foolishness. Freaknic is another example, I was part of it when it was here when I was younger but I don’t blame people to feel the way they do. I feel about it the same way even though I was a part years ago and that is why I feel that way today because it is true.

We had several conversations with Spanish workers at the hotel we were staying at and they asked “Why are black people so angry when they go to an event? You suppose to be happy and have a good time” and one of the female housekeepers said that majority of the staff does not want to work during that weekend because they literally trash all of the rooms and just because you pay for a hotel room, you shouldn’t be throwing your trash all over the room and expect the housekeepers to clean up. Plus none tip ever. Anothe guys said that the week after they have another big event and people are nice, friendly and happy. So obviously there is some truth to it if a lot of folks are saying the exact same thing, in addition a lot of our own people say it too.
