YouTube Sensation, Kreayshawn, Signs $1M Sony Deal

According to online reports, YouTube rap sensation Kreayshawn’s Internet buzz is so loud that mega record labels are taking notice. The baby faced 20-year-old has reportedly landed a $1 million record deal with Sony Music.

When she’s not rapping, the self-proclaimed “occasional lesbian” directs music videos for East Bay rapper Lil B.

Since her performance at SXSW in Austin, Texas in March, Kreayshawn has had the Internet going nuts. Rumored to have recently signed a $1 million contract with Sony after dropping her new video, ‘Gucci Gucci,’ which accrued 1.6 million hits on YouTube in two weeks, Kreayshawn is the next logical step for hipster hip-hop fans, following fellow West Coast oddball-indie success stories Odd Future and Lil B. (The Boom Box)

Earlier this week, Kreayshawn hinted that the Sony deal was on the table:

“[As far as the deal with Sony] nothing is finalized yet,” she told Complex. “We took meetings with every label. They’re not the only people we met with. We’ll make an announcement when everybody is ready, but right now, that’s basically just a rushed ahead rumor. It’s not that exciting. Whatever we end up choosing, it’s going to be a well-thought out decision.” (Complex)

Medical Minute: Deadly E. Coli Superbug Spreads in Europe

A deadly new E. Coli bacterium that is spreading rapidly through Europe has doctors and scientists stumped.

According to NPR, the new E. Coli strain is so virulent and deadly that it is “very rare” and has never been seen in an outbreak form before.

The new bacterium is similar to the E. Coli strain that doctors have seen in the United States. But the new strain is resistant to most antibiotics and it has a different method of making people ill.

The bacterium causes full-blown haemolytic uraemic syndrome (HUS), a condition that results in bloody diarrhea and large volume of blood in urine.

So far, 18 people have died, and 470 people have been sickened in Europe since the World Health Organization (WHO) sounded the alarm on May 20.

The new strain of E. Coli attaches itself to the intestinal walls and releases a deadly toxin that is absorbed through the intestinal walls into the bloodstream.

“What we think happens is the toxins get into the blood stream and injure the blood vessels. And the blood vessels form little clots, and there’s impaired blood flow to organs throughout the body,” said Dr. Phillip Tarr from Washington University in St. Louis.

This type of serious injury to blood vessels leads to kidney and liver failure, and can cause death. More than half of the people sickened by the new E. Coli require kidney dialysis.

“In almost all cases it’s temporary,” Dr. Tarr says. “Dialysis lasts a median of about 8 days.”

But dialysis doesn’t save everybody — as evidenced by the 18 people who died in Europe in the last 2 weeks.

Throwback Thursdays: Tevin Campbell

Remember when lil Tevin Campbell released his bubble gum R&B hit “Tomorrow (A Better You Better Me)” and we all thought he would be the next Michael Jackson? Then he dropped his debut album T.E.V.I.N., which ended all speculation that he was destined to be an icon.

The album did spawn the hit single “Tell Me What You Want Me To Do”, which peaked at #1 on the Billboard Adult Contemporary chart.

Just when we thought Tevin would be a two-hit wonder, he came roaring back with his followed up album, I’m Ready, which yielded the romantic ballads, “Can We Talk” and “I’m Ready”.

It looked like Tevin was well on his way to being an R&B success. But like many others before him, Tevin gave in to the temptations of drugs and alcohol, which ravaged his choir boy looks.

In September 1999, Campbell was arrested for soliciting sex from a male undercover police officer. He pleaded no contest and was ordered to pay a stiff fine and to attend AIDS awareness classes. The court order sparked rumors that he was HIV positive.

Now 34, Campbell is struggling to resurrect his music and acting careers.

The Real Reason Queen Latifah’s Lover Dumped Her

As you know by now, entertainment mogul Queen Latifah, 41 and her longtime lover, Jeanette Jenkins, have separated.

According to a confidential source, Queen Latifah, real name Dana Owens, and the 40-something Jenkins, have a rocky on again, off again relationship. But my source tells me the relationship is definitely off for good this time.

My source said that Jenkins, an avid fitness buff, was the glue that held the relationship together. But the personal trainer to the stars is a bit anal and something of a perfectionist. For Jenkins failure is never an option, and she could no longer tolerate being with a woman who refused to exercise and eat right.

“Jeanette is very image and health conscious. She was tired of watching Dana eat, drink and smoke herself to death,” said my source. She confirmed that Latifah’s ballooning weight and her smoking habit were factors in the break up.

Why are Cassie and Eva Pigford featured in VIBE’s ‘Sexy’ issue?

VIBE magazine’s ‘Sexy’ issue continues the self-hating black male’s obsession with all things LSLH (light skinned, long hair). VIBE’s ‘Sexy’ issue, which hits newsstands in July, features Puffy Combs’ concubine, Cassie, and pseudo-model Eva Pigord in monotonous, half nude photo spreads.

In my opinion, neither of these women are particularly sexy. Yes, they’re cute, but they are not sexy by any stretch of the imagination.

Diane Warren: I just wrote a Beyoncé song that might be my best yet

Grammy winning songwriter Diane Warren is often confused with that other award winning songwriter, Denise Rich (at least by me). Both ladies have written pop songs for the ages. But Warren is more prolific. You may not know her name but you know her songs:

Because You Loved Me.” “How Do I Live.” “I Don’t Want to Miss a Thing.” “Love Will Lead You Back.” “If I Could Turn Back Time.” “Un-Break My Heart.”

The list goes on and on. Warren, who is very humble, is not one to toot her own horn. But when Warren says she’s written the “career song” for singer Beyoncé, that tooting horn sounds like music to Bey’s Stans’ ears!

I just wrote something a week and a half ago that Beyoncé recorded and I think it’s the best thing I’ve ever written. She sang it amazingly. I think it’s a career song and probably my favorite thing I’ve ever written … right now. Well, to be honest, I always like my newest songs the most. But I’m also really proud of stuff like “Because You Loved Me,” “Unbreak My Heart” and “I Don’t Want To Miss A Thing.” I love the song I wrote for Justin Bieber’s movie. Or this new song I’m doing for Jennifer Hudson’s movie – they’re all my favorites. But I have to say, this Beyoncé song … I think it’s really, really going to touch people.

With Bey hearing Kelly Rowland’s footsteps quickly approaching from behind her, the one thing she sorely needs right now is a career song. I do like the direction that Beyoncé’s music is going in. Her lyrics are beginning to sound a lot more mature, and Beyoncé’s vocal tug-of-war with the lush musical arrangements of her new tracks is quite interesting.

Now if only she would stop over-singing on every track…
