According to Miss Jia, a fierce debate is raging on Twitter.com over a marketing campaign by body care brand Nivea.

The ad, which is in national magazines, shows a clean shaven, nicely dressed young black male who is in the process of metaphorically launching his old, unkempt self. In his right hand he holds a head with an uncombed natural afro. The ad copy reads: 'Look like you give a damn.'

Miss Jia reports that Twitter.com is in an uproar over the ads. But was Nivea wrong or are they just presenting us with the image that we present to the world? Would the ads cause the same uproar if the dude was dressed with his pants sagging off his butt?

Nivea is simply holding a mirror up and forcing us to look at ourselves as society sees us.

  • Mamacita

I swear people get outraged about anything.

This is dumb and wish some black people would get over themselves!

  • STL OPINION!

Sandra I completely agree with you!!! When you pt a mirror to people about their harsh reality they wanna go in a uproar i see absolutely nothing wrong with this ad besides the "look like you give a damn" statement i don't think that was needed

  • RoderickXYZ

Sandra like most black conservatives care what the world( white folks) think.

  • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xt5ghXdq6Z0 Zoe B.

 I don't think it's racist, it is just showing an unkempt black male. The head also has a grown out beard showing that he is just unkempt. It's not like the head has a shape up on his afro and beard, then that would be different. If it was a white male then it would me the same just with non textured hair. I don't see the big deal.

A lot of people are saying that it's dig at black people's "natural" hair. Going natural is not an excuse for you to look like a bum! The afro isn't combed and the beard is all over the place. If I was natural I'd be insulted that people actually think that's what "natural" is supposed to look like.

  • OSHH

Just like with the DOVE ad, some people over-react much.

Everybody keeps talking about "we need to look at ourselves." Well, let's all look at ourselves. Are any of you unkempt? Do you smell? Are you a "stereotypes?" Why couldn't the after pic been a guy with a nice shaped afro? He could have still even shaved his beard. But why couldn't he keep the afro? There is a lot of talk about black women who people (not me) say cover up their natural hair with relaxers, wigs and weaves because they are ashamed of thier natura hair. I say some men do that too by "rockin a baldy". If it's shaved or almost shaved they don't have to show their natural texture to the world.

We don't control the media so we can't control how we are depicted.

I agree with you Sandra to a certain point. I do agree that we tend to get a little defensive when we are put on blast (and often rightfully so). Some of the things we do as a culture really needs to stop. However, there needs to be more responsibility and accountability to these companies for these ads. Although some of this may be true it is still presented in a very steryotypical way. I agree that they should've taken more time to think this one through! They probably don't really care b/c blacks are not really the target market for Nivea. We're not buying the stuff anyway so what do they care (still irresponsible).

Um...Sandra. The Geico caveman's skin is very DARK, and they NEVER have considered themselves anything close to Cavemen. Cavemen is a step up from an APE and they have called African American's monkeys for centuries. White people wouldn't complain because they don't see themselves that way. I guess Nivea doesn't have anyone black or someone that knows anyone black in their marketing department. When did the word "damn" become ok to put on a national campaign? This AD is very much an attempt to make us look bad. It is very racist. I can think of several other ways this ad could have been done effectively and in a tasteful manner. Why not use his real hair...showing him scruffy and needing a shave, but instead use a cheap Party City Afro wig on a painted mannequin head is down right disrespectful. We don't look like that damn head so how dare them. Nivea lost me as a customer with this one and I hope Rihanna steps down as one of their reps.

Nivea ain't saying that the scruffy 'head' or the clean-cut man represent ALL African-American men. That ad is only racist to people who percieve it to be that way. I'm willing to bet that Nivea has similar ads with scruffy lookin white men in them. :coffee:

  • Redeemed777

If only negroes would take the time to learn their TRUE SPIRITUAL HERITAGE, and the history/future of the so-called whites.....

Please read the ENTIRE story of Isaac, his wife and two sons.

    Get understanding.

  • Redeemed777

    Esau = Edom

    Jacob = Israel

    Get understanding.

    Please read [ 2 Esdras 6:9 ] which says:

'' For Esau is the end of the world, and Jacob is the beginning of it that followeth.''

  • Redeemed777

There is a reason why this was said:

'' As it is written, Jacob have I loved, but Esau have I hated. ''

    Romans 9:13

The Lord's WORD will come to pass.

Don't worry about the so-called whites, because the end of them will come to pass and remain so forever and ever and ever.

The only thing that I find disturbing and offensive is the slogan "look like you give a damn", the man has an afro and facial hair which is unkempt because his afro should be picked and neat and it's not. Gosh people need to stop wearing their hearts on their sleeves and learn how to look over some ish, everything isn't racist and if you find racist undertones in everything then maybe YOU'RE racist! The slogan is unprofessional imo but I guess that's what's in right now, just like the Axe "Clean your balls" slogan, but is the economy really that bad that companies are forced to use this type of crap to get consumers attention?

I could look at that ad much more deeply. but I won't get into all of that. Nivea in a way achieved their bottom line: they got a specific demographic to notice their product. It's half negative attention, but what's most disturbing is the other half of said demographic that will relate to this campaign. Think about it.

  • CookieMonsterZ

    *deeply, but

  • bnatural

I looked on facebook and other places and there is a REAL outrage at this ad. People are taking their complaints to the parent company.

I am so happy that black folks are beginning (baby steps) to fight back against these perceptions of us. The words used in the ad makes the picture seem more offensive than it should be....

Oh and where is the ad featuring the white guy? :coffee:

  • Bigbadwolf

:hahaha: I don't think the ad is racist. There are plenty of people who need to clean up those beards and afros, even the locs. Just because you havd dreds does not mean they don't need to be re-twisted and maintained. Nivea was being blunt. They said what a lot of people think.

  • EmDiva

I think the ad is totally offensive and the message is blatant. The fact that some see nothing wrong is a little disturbing but I'm willing to bet that's why these ads continue to make it to the public and they'll only get worse.

Funny how we talk about what makes us look bad, but we are completely engaging in it by watching. Why not put our money where our complaining mouths are and stop supporting shows or whatever medium "makes us look bad." When shows of substance come out, we don't watch, so, what does that say about us?

  • PrettyG07

I have a fro. Should I go relax my hair to "Look like I give a damn"?
This add might have been perceived differently if instead of cutting off the fro all together it was just cleanly shaped. Who knows? All I know is that I've had more negitive reactions from BLACK people than anybody else when I went natural. Maybe black people feel the same about hair as they do about the word ni*ger. Only black people can dis natural black hair. For anybody else to do it is a no no.

  • laterthannever

    Nivea is full of fail

    - their raggelly azz cream stinks and is greasy
    - they currently have an ad on EBT (I was watching ray, ok?) with no brown people. AND in the commercial (that airs every 15 seconds) they're talking about soft skin and closeness while playing a Rihanna song about distance (California King Bed). The picture of her album is the only sight of brown in the ad.

    Idiotas!

  • http://chocolatecandybox.blogspot.com XanBeans

If you look at the ad with the white man in it, that for whatever reason wasn't posted with one above, you will see that it's the same mask with the same unkept hair and beard. The only difference is the hair texture and skin color on the mask. No racism and no mirror to see us as society sees us. Just an add to promote their skin care line.

  • Henny Blaque

Sandra, what is your opinion on Niveas Self tan spray ad? Have you seen it?
