Tracee Ellis wasn’t born with good hair, she works hard for it
Diana Ross’s middle daughter, Tracee Ellis Ross, 38, covers the October 10th issue of JET magazine.
Having made her mark on the hit show “Girlfriends” Tracee Ellis Ross is making her television comeback. Her new show, “Reed Between The Lines,” which premieres October 11 on BET, features Ross as a happily married therapist and mother of three. The new gig is just one of the many exciting changes happen in Ross’ life. JET has all the details on her workout regime, her rumored beau (Def Jam’s Bu Thiam), and her famous hair. “You gotta respect the curls … I work for them,” says Ross.
Her banging body might become a new obsession for her many admirers, but for now, when you type her name into Google, the top search is for “Tracee Ellis Ross hair.” “I have so much hair it’s extraordinary,” she says, admitting no one is more obsessed than she is. “You could take half the hair on my head and cover another person’s head.” She grew out her relaxer in high school and has tested so many styles, serums and conditioners that she might put out a book and a line of hair products one day. Not a fan of bone straight hair— “I’m Diana Ross’ child… big hair is what I come from”— she has learned one important lesson in natural hair manage ment: “You gotta respect the curls,” she says. “I work for them. I can’t tell them what to do.”

I posted a pic of my hair just washed on twitter when I 1st took my weave out. Before being blowed out & straightened, my hair curls up to ABOVE my shoulders.
It’s amazing how much shrinkage is there. I haven’t mastered my curls either so I’ve never done a wash-n-go on my whole head. Too much to deal with and too many colliding textures.
@Tatted It isn’t easy. You have to be dedicated. I started when I was 13 because my mom kept putting box relaxers in my hair and didn’t know what she was doing. I’m 22 now and still trying to learn what works for my hair and what doesn’t.

I love being natural. I honestly never new I had all these curls. Hair grows so much faster while natural. Although it’s a chore finding out which product works and how to maintain the curls without frizzing, drying, etc. I would never ever ever get a relaxer! I LOVE MY HAIR!

@Htown, I would suggest half wigs cus im addicted to them now. I cornrow my hair and saturate it in oil and i dont touch it…i only wash my hair 2 to 3 times a month and its growing its ass off

Just cut the relaxer out as it grows. I did. Took about 2.5 years to grow all of it out though.

And regarding your hair you can always transition. A lot of people do that and wear braid outs or curly dos until they’re comfortable with the length to cut off the perms. Check out curlynikki dot com
The natural hair does grow faster in my opinion… but it’s hard to maintain… especially when it’s thick and coarse

If you go to Kimmaytube (she’s a bit snobbish, but very educated on natural hair), Lexiwiththecurls, and Nikkimae2003 they all provide GREAT information and have went from big chop to healthy, beautiful hair. I tried to do it, but I have no patience in styling my own hair, and I never did the big chop. Some day, some day.

I only wash my hair once a month. Under a weave- 2x a month. I’ve learned that low-no manipulation works for me. (And it’s why I only comb my hair once a week….)

But its gonna break underneath all that whiles she’s letting that perm grow out….her best bet is to cut off and let it grow back cause if she just “covers” her hair and not perm it its gonna fall out.
I was wearing a short cut back in January 2010. I got tired of giving the beauty shop all my money and decided to just let it grow with out a perm. Now my hair is down my back…but its thin on top. Probably from years of wearing glue and not knowing how to properly remove it.
i also had color too that i was growing out so that looked weird
first it was dark roots, then half my hair was colored, then it looked like i had just the tips colored

I like Kimmay but she is a bit snobbish sometimes. It’s one girl on there who is fricking GORGEOUS with big curls just like Tracee Ross who I like to watch too. I think she was e-beefing with Kimmay at one point as well.
Chi, not necessarily. That’s what I did. I just let it grow and wore braids and quick wigs and it’s now thick and healthy.
Maybe it depends on the kind of hair !
I co-wash about every 10 days and use a clarifying shampoo once every 6 weeks. I mostly keep twists and even co-wash with them in. When they get old or I get bored i wear a twist out. If you take a good multi-vitamin or biotin it makes a differnce.
i wash mine about every 2 weeks.
i abhor the process of washing and drying my own hair tho
i wish yasin wasn’t all the way in foggy bottom
and i don’t wanna go to the salon across the street bc i know they will do that chargin me extra for curl and length crap

I have scalp issues and I noticed that massaging my scalp with either tea tree oil or rosemary helped tons!
My hair grows pretty quickly naturally. I don’t remember how long it took my hair to grown while relaxed because I haven’t been relaxed in 10 years. As long as I leave my hair alone and moisturized it’s fine. I rarely clip my ends.

Cowash is washing with conditioner only. Some disagree this method works, some say it works magic. A clarifying shampoo basically is a bit stronger than regular shampoo that should be used only every 4-6 weeks. It gets ALL the gunk built up in your hair.

Whether you are natural or relaxed, you have to take proper care of your hair. I also follow this girl Crystal Rose Love who is relaxed, she started off with hair just above her neck and she is almost a BSL in less than a year. You have to find out what works for you, what’s in the products you are using, eating a balanced diet, and drinking plenty of water(not Koolaid).

jojoba oil also has good anti-bacterial properties. You can try using that as a hot oil treatment maybe? I had to let relaxers go because my hair was healthy but my scalp was jacked up from the chemicals. Even a kiddie perm left me with sores…and that was leaving it on just long enough to put on my entire head.
I’m currently transitioning and it is NOT fun! I did a big chop and still have some relaxed ends but, I will cut that as my hair grows out. *sigh*

I cowash one month and then clarify the next month. Clarifying cleans your scalp and hair really good. Gets everything out and should get rid of any flakes/irritations.

I hate when salons charge you an extra $5-15 for length. That burns me up!! I used to get got like that a lot at this one salon I went to.
I know they say clipping your ends help to retain, but I don’t believe that. I haven’t had my ends clipped since April and I used to every other month…..

I use Infusium 23 Moisturizing shampoo when I watch every other month ($3) and Suave Daily Clarifying Shampoo ($1.29) on the clarifying months.

My sis-in-law told me that my hair is not always as healthy(shiny)looking as it could be, because I use the same shampoo every time. She said that I should use “white girl shampoo” every now and then. I use Creme of Nature/w moisturizer otherwise I wouldn’t be able to comb my wet hair.

I’m chemical free 2 years 1 month. Going natural from a perm can be very frustrating IMO fall/winter is a great time to start. I began with weaves, I HATE them now, I feel like my scalp is not breathing and I had some breakage. Then I went to a ponytail. How dreadful #dwightsvoice. Then I started slowing cutting off 1/2 inch once a month. I had a semi buzz going on. Then I someone how ended up at the Dominicans. Most say it’s bad for your hair, but I have not had any breakage my hair is 2 inches from my shoulder. I recently got it braids, I had had never worn braids before. But it was a nice relief from the summer heat.

I was reading in Jet and Derek J said the when you first get a synthetic wig you should wash it with dish washing liquid and condition it with fabric softner….he said it takes away that ‘wiggy’ look that synthetic wigs have…
