Denver man who called 911 to report a threatening road-rage encounter reluctantly followed a 911 dispatcher’s order to return to the scene of the crime, where he was fatally shot while waiting for police.
Jimma Reat, a 26-year-old immigrant from Sudan, was traveling with his brother, cousin, and other passengers early Sunday morning, when a road-rage incident occurred at around 4 a.m., according to ABC affiliate KMGH.
Reat’s cousin, Ran Pal, called 911 and reported that the occupants of a red Jeep had thrown bottles at their car, breaking the windows and threatening the people in the car, according to the report. Denver police confirmed the report but have not publicly released the name of the caller.
Reat, Pal and the others in the car had left Denver and were traveling home when they were instructed by the 911 dispatcher to return to within Denver’s borders in order to receive police assistance, according to Denver police.
The group traveled back to Denver to wait for police assistance, but were fired upon by the occupants of the Jeep, which had arrived at the same part of the city, police said.
According to the Denver Post, the 911 dispatcher and Reat argued about the instruction to return to the scene of the altercation, with the dispatcher threatening to withhold police assistance unless Reat drove back to Denver.
“The call transpired very quickly,” Carl Simpson, executive director of Denver 911, told ABC affiliate KMGH. “It got sideways very quickly. I am deeply saddened by the events that transpired. This call left me very saddened for the family.”
Of the dispatcher, Simpson said, “I do know he didn’t follow procedures.”

Remember this craziness from last week? Well here are more details on this sad, sad case of out of pocket pigs killing a 68-year-old Marines vet for no reason:
Something went terribly, fatally wrong when police responded to the Winbrook Houses in White Plains on Nov. 19, and the facts in the death of Kenneth Chamberlain are long overdue. The basic outline of the episode is horrendous. Chamberlain, 68, was a Marine Corps veteran and former correction officer who had a medical-alert system in his apartment because he suffered from a serious heart condition.
He apparently had activated the apparatus unintentionally as he slept. Unable to arouse him using a loudspeaker that was part of the system, the alert service called for medical assistance, which arrived in pre-dawn darkness, along with police. Less than an hour later, Chamberlain was dead, shot twice by a cop who, the Daily News reveals, was previously named in a federal civil rights suit stemming from an alleged nightstick beating. He fired after the responders tried to stun Chamberlain into submission and shot beanbags at him.
Unexplained is why the cops forced their way into Chamberlain’s apartment after he told them through the door that he was okay. Unexplained is why the officers escalated a mission of mercy into a violent confrontation in which, perhaps, Chamberlain resorted to wielding a knife. Unexplained is why one of them pulled the trigger while facing a man who was so infirm he had trouble walking distances. Unexplained is why Westchester Country District Attorney Janet DiFiore is only now, almost five months later, empaneling a grand jury. DiFiore must deliver nothing less if she hopes to dispel skepticism as to how aggressively justice is being pursued.
The probe’s apparently slow pace is fueling doubts, and so is the poisonous factor of race. Chamberlain was black, and one of the responders was recorded as saying, “I don’t give a f–k, n—-r, open the door.” Also undermining credibility is that neither DiFiore nor Public Safety Commissioner David Chong will officially name the cops who responded or reveal whether they remain on full duty. The News identified the shooter through sources.
The role of the grand jury is to determine whether any of the cops is criminally liable for killing Chamberlain. The question will turn significantly on whether the shooter had reasonable cause to fear for his life.
