Medical Minute: Flat or Blunted Affect
The most hated man in America is finally behind bars. George Zimmerman, the 28-year-old neighborhood watch volunteer who gunned down unarmed teenager Trayvon Martin, was arrested Wednesday and charged with 2nd degree murder.
The 17-year-old Miami high school student was shot and killed in Sanford, Florida on Feb. 26 as he walked back to a friend’s house from a convenience store with a bag of Skittles and iced tea.
Zimmerman was taken into custody the night of the shooting, but he was released without charges when he claimed self-defense under Florida’s controversial Stand Your Ground law.
In his mugshot, taken hours after he turned himself in — Zimmerman stares straight at the camera, with a blank expression on his face.
In clinical terms, a flat or blunted affect refers to a person whose facial expression shows no emotion in response to a circumstance that would normally prompt a human reaction.
A blunt affect “can be symptomatic of schizophrenia, depression, or brain damage”. Victims of post-traumatic stress syndrome are often said to display blunted affect.
In contrast to a flattened affect, a labile affect refers to a person’s pathological expression which switches rapidly between laughter, crying, or smiling in a short period of time.
In Zimmerman’s case, wearing a flat affect after he has just been arrested for murder could signify a man who is emotionally bankrupt. Meaning, Zimmerman may lack the ability to feel empathy for another person or to express his feelings.
Schizophrenics often show a flat affect. They speak in a monotone voice that is empty of emotion, and they appear extremely apathetic.
In a clinical setting a blunted affect is considered less intense than a flat affect.

His brother should shut up, he is coming off as self centered, stuck on himself with the fresh mohawk cut, he seems attention grabbing, not to mention plan dumb. His is not helping the over all image of the family. But then again sometimes you have to let people speak, so they can trip trip themselves up, all by their lonely.

I’m going to hold off on celebrating until the trial is over and we get a verdict. Definitely happy that he is in custody and being charged, this is step one, we have a long way to go. I hope the attention on this event doesn’t begin to die down now that he is custody. We need to follow this to the end and continue to be vocal because there is no telling how this could end. I hope he at least gets 25 years to life with no parole. I’ll wait and see where the dice falls, but finally this ass is behind bars where he was supposed to be 7 weeks ago.

I don’t know about a flat or blunted affect (I’m not a medical or psychiatric professional) but to me he has the facial expression of a person who believes they have nothing to worry about. This man does not believe that he will be convicted. He knows that he’s actually safer behind bars than outside because they’d have to be stupid to put him in with the general population, he probably expects to receive bail so he won’t spend more than a night or two behind the bars of his solitary cell and so he has the expression of a person who feels they have nothing to worry about. I think he is a sociopath who doesn’t think he did anything wrong and probably can’t understand why people are so up in arms. Which is why he is so dangerous, because he will act out again once given the chance to do so all in the name of “protecting and serving” the community

I believe as stated before he has the “sense of enitlement syndrome”. He felt that his father’s status as an ex-judge would get his charges dropped. His Father has helped him get off so many times in the past. This time however he messed with the wrong one. He messed with a child whose family loved him to no end. A family who was not going to take the lame excuses from the Sanford Police Department, cry and sit down but was willing to go the extra/extra miles for justice. I believe he is totally surprised he was charged. He still believes that he will get off scott free. He never valued Trayvon’s life as important. To him Trayvon was just a nobody but he is quickly finding out everybody black/white/latino is important to somebody.
I don’t think anything is mentally wrong with Zimmerman. He is just an a-hole who didn’t use the common sense God gave him and ending up ruining his life and senselessly ending someone else’s.
I’m glad they’ve finally arrested it’s just sad that it took so long for it to happen.

I’m glad somebody else noticed that. I was so mad every time she defended the Sanford PD, I yelled at the TV screen.
Their investigation was not ongoing. They took his word that it was self defense and they closed the case that night. Tracy Martin said the police chief told him there would be no arrest.

Don’t get too happy people. Yes we want him arrested but this is all that people have marched for was for him to be arrested. They have given in to the pressure, however, no one has asked for him to get what he needs and that is the conviction. His parents have gotten him off on so many felonies and they have sealed those cases. What maked yall think that this is going to be different? I just want to be realistic. I can see now that his family will only try to sue him in a civil suit. We are in April and this happened in February,the only reason he is arrested is because of the media attention. He has the look of pleading to his parents to do something and I know that they are doing something cause they were doing it since Feb 26 when Trayvon laid in that morgue. For three days they had time to come up with something without no one knowing anything. Three days Trayvon’s parents didn’t even know where he was but you know who did? Sanford Police,Zimmerman, and Zimmerman’s parents.

@Cheeks, if this goes to trial the prosecutor can include a lesser included charge of manslaughter if they feel the crime doesn’t meet the burden for 2nd degree…it’s up to Zimmerman to decide if he wants a bench trial or a jury trial…if it’s a jury trial, there has to be jury selection and that ish could take a minute and it it’s a jury trial the defense could ask for a change of venue

Thanks yall….So I finally figured out my password to change my pic, I was feeling left out and ish, having the same one for a year lol….
The problem is in order for him to be convicted of 2nd degree they have to prove beyond a reasonable doubt…that means that if there is even a slight doubt they can’t convict him…Unfortunately there was a 2 minute interval (from when h got off the phone and Trey was shot) where nobody knows what exactly happened=doubt…. And we all know that Florida is the land of reasonable doubt with the whole Casey Anthony foolishness…Let us pray that they don’t pick the jurors from the same pool they picked those simple-minded folk from.
At least with manslaughter they just have to prove reckless intent or behavior right (working on my legal jargon)
