A New Brunswick judge today sentenced 20-year-old Dharun Ravi to just 30 days in prison for his role in a webcam invasion of privacy incident which resulted in the suicide of Rutgers student Tyler Clementi.

Ravi, a former Rutgers student, had faced up to 20 years in prison.

The judge, who apparently wasn’t affected by intense media pressure, also didn’t order Ravi to be deported to his native India after he serves his sentence.

Ravi had earlier rejected two plea deals which would have sent him to prison for 3-5 years.

Ravi shed tears as his mother read a statement during the hearing, saying he was “broken into pieces” by Clementi’s death in 2010.

Family and friends of gay Rutgers freshman Tyler Clementi, who took his own life in 2010, asked for the maximum prison sentence for former Rutgers student Dharun Ravi, 20, during emotional impact statements this morning.

Ravi, faces up to 20 years in prison when he is sentenced today in a New Brunswick courtroom.

Dharun Ravi should spend some time in prison so that he can “reflect on the serious harm he has caused,” wrote “M.B.”, the man who was making out with Tyler when Ravi secretly aimed a webcam at them in a dorm room in Sept. 2010.

M.B.’s attorney read his impact statement in court to shield M.B.’s identity.

M.B. met Tyler Celementi online in a gay chat room. The two men met up at the dorm for a sexual encounter that was recorded by Ravi. Clementi later jumped off a bridge after his roommate, Ravi, tweeted the link to the live video on Twitter.com.

In March, Ravi was convicted of 15 counts of invasion of privacy, and other charges. Ravi rejected a plea deal that would have sent him to prison for 3-5 years. Ravi also faces deportation back to his native India after he serves out his sentence.
