What She Said: Gabrielle Union
Actress Gabrielle Union sent out a tweet from her Twitter page chastising the national news media for devoting headlines to the dead panda in Washington rather than the victims who lost their lives to street violence in Chicago over the weekend.
The panda was found dead Sunday morning and the staff at the Smithsonian’s National Zoo in Washington D.C. are said to be “heartbroken” over the loss of the animal.
Meanwhile, a 14-year-old honor student lost his life to street violence in Chicago over the weekend.
Dajae Coleman was shot to death while walking home from a party less than a mile from home, police said, the Chicago Tribune reports.
The boy’s father, Richard Coleman, gave Dajae permission to go to the party. He was to call his father for a ride home. “How you gonna tell a kid with good grades, star basketball player, ‘No, you can’t go out?’” Richard Coleman said. “The last thing he said to me was, ‘Yeah, I’m gonna call you, Dad.’ (He) never called.”

we had a beatdown in the A that resulted in an innocent boy dying. one dude was facing death but it resulted in a hung jury. i think all of them involved are going to get life w/parole. dude was a college student home visiting his mama and got caught up in that stupid azz mentality and started kicking some dude he didn’t even know.

We can volunteer to help, support/develop programs. But ultimately, your household is your responsibility. IMO.

Didn’t even hear the whole story.We agreed before the divorce that there would be no house parties EVA! Turned out a little girl got shot and killed from some randoms that didn’t get invited. All he could do was come in and thank me. These kids live in a sad world. I know that shootings go on anywhere and when it’s your time it’s your time but if I can prevent that ‘time’ coming before it’s ‘time’ I will do what it takes to not bury my kids first.
My house was the hangout spot for my daughter her senior year. Kids came to my house. I would rather they be under my roof than be somewhere else. Parents would call and ask if I knew about some party and can the kids just come to my house instead, yes maam!

@Gigi I think it’s just a part of “fitting in” or “being cool”. Especially since some of these kids are growing up without a father. There’s a void that they need to fill. Like someone said above, if you don’t change the MENTALITY then there’s really not much you can do to help.

Sad story but I tell my honor roll children no. I understand his point but with so much going on in Chicago, you just have to tell your children no but with an explanation. I’m glad my husband and myself moved our four boys from Chicago. Our oldest will be 18 in December, not only is he an honor roll student he also made the national honors society and we talk to him all the time about violence is everywhere. He’s a great role model for his younger brothers who are also honor roll students. I’m told all the time, I don’t let my kids go places by themselves. 1. They are young black men in which being black and males is a target within itself. 2. It’s my job to see my sons be the best they can be and graduate from school and become an adult. I can go on and on. We let them go out to the movies as well as out to eat but we are not that far away and its never ar night. You have other black males who are just upset at the outcome of their lives that they see other black young men and become envious even if they don’t know that young man and starts a fight and pull out a gun on that young man for no reason. Other reasons are gang related, wrong place ….wrong time. Chicago needs to take all those criminas and drop they azz in Iraq and let them fight for their lives since that’s all they want to do is fight and shoot guns. These criminas should have been made to fight in the war, hell they need no training, their already shooting guns.

and they cover up their insecurities and their hopelessness with an air of not caring. Black folk who have “made it” still need to reach back to help. Im not saying i’ve made it but i volunteer at an after school reading and math program for k-5 kids in my old neighborhood and i promise you those parents want the best for their children. Oh I know my aunt and all of her daughters are on assistance – my aunt works hard, her daughters not so much! Her daughter is my cousin with 7 kids and on Section 8 and anything else free she can get her hands on – her sister is on section 8 and just started working, her other sister lives with another sister and receive assistance – and they all try and buck the system to get more assistance! They were raised lazy as fuk and a lot of them had real drug problems

Take juvenile offenses…here parents can help their kids clear whatever transgressions by classes, money, etc. The low income parents usually know nothing about it.

This is a very good topic. Well as you all know, I work in a correctional facility. Ultimately, it is going to be up to the individual on how they determine their future. I have inmates who come from two parent homes where the parents are doctors’, lawyers’ and the like and then I have the one’s who grew up in single parent homes in the projects or low-income housing, both whites and blacks. And, I do agree with the statment, “we are victims of circumstance”. Life’s about choices…

When I went to college I lived in the dorm for one semester than moms said “your baby miss you” I had to move off campus and I paid $450 dollars for a 3bedroom apt from $458 dollars worth of child support. Chil they preaching to the chior.

I went to 13 fukking schools @Yall. That didnt help me…helped me learn how to make friends or disappear.
She also had a serious case of wanderlust/IDGAF who is uprooted. Her husband cheated on her when I was in the 3rd grade..came home from school and the whole house was packed! We moving to atl!

Every day here in Chicago, you turn on the news and something bad has happen to a young child. A girl I know just lost her son this past weekend to gun violence, and he was only 14 years old, and honor roll student coming from a party at 10:30PM
They have to make the choice.

I was on birth control for three of my five. The first none: i lied to the doc and my mom, told them I wasnt having sex. They believed me. I was pregnant right then.
The 2nd I was on pills. It could have been my error, but I was staunch as was my mom about it. The third, I was on depo. I had gotten three shots before we knew i was preggo. I think thats why he’s a genuis.
My mom wanted to sue! They reminded her that i was fukking and the chances are only 97%
My fourth and fifth, no bc. Thought I was getting married.
But I am happy to report if you have awesome uterus like mine, IUD is the way to go.

#latereply They can start by providing a safe place for kids to play and be after school. (Instead they cut afterschool programs and the such). It seems every year Summer youth is getting cut shorter and shorter. If kids can work for some money that can cut down on them robbing other’s for theirs. I know one of the politician’s from Chi was on the View with Prince speaking about how they were putting together a concert to bring people who are looking for jobs together with people who are offering jobs. If they could do something similar for the youth that would be great. Maybe get some of these record companies to hire some of these kids as interns since most of them want to be in the industry.

I live in Chicago and many times I dread watching the news. Every morning when I get up there has been a murder the night before. There LITERALLY is someone or some persons who has lost their lives and it is sickening. It is out of control and senseless! I have a 15 year old son and I watch him like a hawk. He doesn’t understand it’s for his own good. I don’t allow him out at night with a group of boys anywhere. Hell…I barely let him go out in the day time and just hang out with a group of boys. A group of boys rather innocent or not is just a target for trouble. It really is sad, there has been so many lives lost, and the summer had not even began…it is terrible!
This did not happen in Chicago. Regardless of what happened concerning violence his story should have been told while his killer is still walking free. miss union should shut up if she has nothing positive to say especially concerning the lost of someone’s child. had it been someone in her family I’m sure she would have done something by now. that’s sad that’s all she could say when Dae Dae admires her boyfriend. she’s clearly is mentally unstable for making a comment like that. #DaeDaeWorld RIP
