15-year-old girl who performed at Obama’s Inauguration shot and killed in Chicago

Hidaya Pendleton A 15-year-old girl who performed with her high school band for President Obama at his 2nd Inauguration last week was shot and killed in the Kenwood area of Chicago Tuesday.

Hidaya Pendleton died just blocks from the high school she attended. The teenager was an honor student, a well-liked volleyball player, and majorette.

Witnesses tell CBS 2’s Mike Parker that Pendleton was among a group of 10 to 12 teenagers seeking shelter from the rain under a canopy in a park on the 4500 block of South Oakenwald Avenue around 2:30 p.m., when a gunman jumped a fence, and opened fire on the teens.

Pendleton was shot once in the back. She was pronounced dead at the University of Chicago Comer Children’s Hospital. Another boy was hit in the leg. He was also taken to Comer Children’s Hospital. He is expected to recover from his injuries.

A witness said the teens scattered in different directions when the shots rang out. No one could give a good description of the gunman.

Jennifer West who lives in the neighborhood said gunshots are a rare occurrence on her block.

“We hardly … have any crime. There’s been a few break-ins over the past two years since we’ve been here, but nothing that’s ever caused alarm,” she said.

Another resident called 911 after hearing six gunshots.

“There has to be an end to it. It’s just too much. The children cannot go to school. They’re in fear,” resident Bonita O’Bannion said.

  • 3rd suspect in quadruple slayings: ‘I ain’t kill them kids’
  • Police said Pendleton had no gang affiliations, but several of the teens she was with were believed to be known gang members.

It’s a shame; Obama shed tears for the 20 children who died at Sandy Hook, but he has no tears to shed for the hundreds of black children who were gunned down in his own backyard since he’s been president.

Obama Talks Chicago Violence: “I Live On The Southside…Murders Happening Blocks From Home”
Oct 28, 2012 90 Comments By Kirsten West Savali Share 178 In a somber moment, President Barack Obama finally discusses the war-zone level violence in his hometown of Chicago, Illinois, where over 400 murders had occurred by the end of September.

RELATED: Dear Mr. President: What About Chicago?

Speaking candidly with Sway Calloway in a 30-minute MTV Special, “Ask Obama Live: An MTV Interview with the President,” the POTUS said that the violence strikes close to home for him.

“I live on the South side of Chicago,” said Obama, who lives in the city’s Hyde Park neighborhood. “Some of these murders are happening just a few blocks from where I live. I have friends whose family members have been killed.”

      NaijaGal says:

Though he has been heavily criticized for tap-dancing around gun violence, some would say in an ineffective attempt at pandering to the 2nd amendment, NRA-loving crowd who, in all likelihood, won’t vote for him anyway, he says that critics have to look beyond guns and embrace and “all-of-the-above approach”:

“What I know is that gun violence is part of the issue,” he said. “But part of the issue also is kids who feel so little hope and think their prospects for the future are so small that their attitude is, ‘I’m going to end up in jail or dead.’ And they will take all kinds of risks.”

“If they’ve got mental health issues, are they getting the kind of services and counseling that they need early on?” he said.

“Are we making those investments in those young people so that by the time they’re 11, 12, 13, 15 … they can make responsible choices because they feel they’ve got something at stake?”

President Obama acknowledges that though his administration has addressed some of these issues, community organizations and law enforcement must remain diligent so that “kids don’t feel as if they’ve got no prospects in life and end up killing each other.”

      THEY SHOULD HAVE ASKED:

As PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES WHAT DO YOU PLAN ON DOING TO HELP state, local officials do about this issue??????

I will wait for you to find that answer as well

      :coffee:

SWAY and MTV SURELY is the platform to address this issue

When we were kids, we walked and went to the Museum of Science and Industry during the summers. It’s just what the kids in our neighborhood did. Those safe and innocent times for kids now are figment of the parents’ imagination.

That repair has to be done by the people who live in these communities themselves. If the culture of having and raising fatherless children in low economic, crime-ridden, neighbordhoods continues then they can’t even begin to effectively tackle these issues.

Yes, I do. I have a 16 year old daughter. Periodically I have to take her IPod/Phone for a few days to give her some time to get in touch with reality. The lyrics to some of the music and the things that are on televison desensitizes people IMO. We began to accept things as common occurances of we hear or see them over and over again. I try to make sure she understands all women do not make “twerk” videos, all men aren’t gangstas and it’s not acceptable to be called out of your name, etc……

And if they still end up shooting folk then that means there is something psychologically wrong with the child and THAT should be addressed. Its alot deeper than what people think. Furthermore, there are certain things that are generational and certain things should start with the parents so that kids and adults don’t end up shooting people for what most like to say “no reason at all”. And if they still end up shooting folk then that means there is something psychologically wrong with the child and THAT should be addressed. Its alot deeper than what people think. Agree with me if you want or don’t…i dont care really

It is TIME for HIM to start addressing issues in black America
      ——
He is an African America president. That does not mean he is only for black America. And really, if he did try then what? Because truth be told, Black America, for the most part is not doing a damn thing to help themselves, or fix the problems. We just blame everyone but us. And don’t get mad because you know damn well it’s true.

Why is it contantly stated that “he is an African American president, that does not mean he is only for black America” when Black people try to get on his agenda? He singles out other groups to address their problems… with no regard to addressing ONLY a single group.

Otherwise I agree with your statements. Well said.

This is very sad but the norm now in chi-town. Beautiful young ladies with a great head on her shoulders but a poor choice in the friends she choose to be around . These young ladies are fascinated with gang members. yes, it was raining but back then our parents didn’t dare, you better get your butts home soaking wet and all. Some of the people she was with were gang members. We as parents do not take the time to find out who our children are so called friends with, where they are going etc. our mothers, grandmothers etc., wanted to know who you hung with, what type a person is this, I want o met them, the list goes on. Things are a lot worser now in Chi-Raq, so why are these parents continuing to let their children do what they want to do. I trust my honor student boys but hey, a kid will be a kid and you give them an inch they will take a mile. I will go to their highschool without their knowledge and go directly to their classroom, yes, I have a copy of their class schedule. They have no clue when I’ll pop up. Back then, you had a time limit to get your butt home after school, or your parent will come looking for you with that belt no matter the situation. It’s sad she lost her life over what will actually be something senseless.

I lived in DC for 34 yrs, recently retired and moved south. (Confederate country.) The late 80s and all of the 90s were plagued by black homicides, young black men killing each other.( My 25 yr old nephew, God rest his soul, was one.) A young black man was killed almost every night. Almost 500 one yr. In 99 and 08, I op-eds in the WashPost, each addressing black men killing black men. In 08, I mentioned Obama and McCain, and the title was “Black or White”, will they care? The Post surrounded my piece with pictures of each presidential candidate, and a picture of a black woman screaming over her sons body. I told them to take a good, hard look out one of those White House windows and see all the black younguns dying, on the streets of the most important city in the world. President Obama should address this issue.(I agree with Katt Williams on Obama: mention me please, please, just once. If white kids were doing it, Congress would have addressed it long ago. Just another n*****, dead, in 2013.
