Teen slain for his $600 Marmot parka

Raphael Ward

A popular 16-year-old Lower East Side teenager was gunned down after he refused to hand over his expensive winter parka to a gang of thugs, the NY Post reports.

Raphael Ward became the first shooting victim of the New Year in New York City. Ironically, he predicted his own death on his social networking account hours before he was shot.

Ward, whose Facebook name was “BloccBoy Tokyo” wrote “I’m dead,” according to friends. The teen was shot once in the chest in front of the DeWitt Reformed Church at 280 Rivington St. about 9 p.m. on Friday, according to the NY Post. Ward died near the apartment he shared with his single mother and younger brother. His mother was too distraught to speak to a reporter.

TEXT Witnesses described the gunman as 5-foot-6, 120 to 140 pounds, wearing a dark wool hat and a ski mask.

When he was accosted by the gang, Ward reportedly refused to hand over his Marmot parka which retails for as much as $600.

After he was shot, the popular student stumbled into a nearby convenience store still wearing the coveted coat.

Ward’s distraught friend Cynthia Nieves, 14, said she met Ward just before he was gunned down. She said he warned her: “Go home!”

“He knew they were coming back,” she said.

Nicholas Ramos, 18, said he was with Ward when they went to get a slice of pizza across from the church. Ramos told the NY Post that Ward “stopped to talk to somebody.” Ramos said he continued on across the street to the pizza shop, “and that’s when he got shot,” said Ramos.

Ramos said he heard several shots, but paused before he ran to help his friend. Ward was later declared dead at Beth Israel Hospital, the NY Post reports.

Ward was described as a “good kid” by friends. Police say Ward had one prior arrest in November 2011, for possession of pot and trespassing. Police are reviewing surveillance video that may have captured the assailants.

State Sen. Daniel Squadron called for more gun control to prevent such senseless crimes from occurring.

“We must continue to work together as a community to fight the scourge of gun violence and make our homes and our streets safer for our families,” he said. “From stronger gun laws to improved safety at NYCHA developments, we are reminded far too often that the time to act is now.”

Why did a teenager have a $600 coat? Even if this kid made an honest living, his mom should’ve advised against him purchasing and wearing something so expensive. Especially since it sounds like they were living in a neighborhood infested with thugs.

It’s too bad that we have to question, why the kid had a $600 coat. It was my first thought. Parents tend to compensate w/expensive gifts, and he lost his life over it. I have a full time job, I don’t have a $600 coat.

While it’s not unusual for an older man to marry a younger wife in Saudi culture, the recent marriage of a 90-year-old Saudi man to a 15-year-old girl is raising human rights questions.

In an interview with the Al Arabiya news channel, the elderly groom said his marriage was “legal and correct” and noted he paid the girl’s parents a $17,500 dowry.
But the man told the station that on the couple’s first night together, his new bride locked him out of their bedroom. Family friends said the teen was scared on her wedding night and locked herself in the room for two straight days before fleeing to her parents’ home.

The groom said he would sue the girl’s parents if they didn’t return the dowry or send his bride back.

Saudi National Association for Human Rights member Suhaila Zein al-Abedin urged authorities to get involved, according to Al Arabiya.
Abedin said marriage in Islam must be based on mutual consent and the girl’s behavior indicates she was not satisfied with the arrangement.

The teen’s parents– a Saudi mother and Yemeni father – should also be held responsible for marrying their daughter to such an old man, Abedin noted.

Not a daggum thang! She woulda got a good Burri the next day
Burri is the tradition of giving the woman gifts after the 1st night together usually jewelery and personal items wrapped in a silk square. the more elaborate embroidery on the silk, the higher the compliment. All she had to do was put it out there like he still got it and wore it out and the gifts would have been fantastic. But you can’t expect a 15yr old to think that far ahead. I mean she’s not gonna be allowed to divorce him and nobody else is gonna marry her now.

      @Sunkissed

Apple RIM and these other electronic/cell phone manufactures could make thefts pointless by rendering the phones/tablet/ipads/blackberries etc useless when reported lost or stolen but they won’t do it. Because they get repeat business when people’s stuff gets stolen. So in a sense these companies are rewarding the thieves by making it worth their while to steal somebodies iPad cause somebody else will buy it and it keeps working. So they keep stealing and the victims keep buying replacements.. REPEAT BUSINESS!

You negros still robbing and killing folk of their shoes and coats? You got freedom to work in any career, but decide not to and complain about that. I hate goons and any people who associate with them. Sad part about these type cases is someone knows who did it and the person’s whereabouts, but will keep quiet for years. In most cases, they’ll take this secret to the grave.
