There was a similar boycott staged in Miami more than 20 years ago, when recently freed South African freedom activist Nelson Mandela visited the United States in 1990. The Miami City Commission, seconded by then Cuban-American Mayor Xavier Suarez, “snubbed” Mandela a few days prior his arrival in Miami after he praised dictators Fidel Castro and Moammar Gaddafi as well as PLO head Yasser Arafat, reports The Miami Herald.

This prompted the “most controversial yet successfully executed and effective protests in this city’s history — the black boycott of Miami or as one of its leaders,” notes the newspaper. The boycott was dubbed “the Quiet Riot” and cost the city up to $50 million. The boycott not only observed by African-Americans but many other groups joined in as well.

A boycott of the entire state could run into the billions. “Florida rakes in nearly $70 billion annually in tourism dollars. Obviously tourism is a huge centerpiece of the state’s economy. A tourism boycott then could have a significant economic impact on the state,”

In the state of Florida, the season on African-Americans now runs year round. Come one, come all. And bring a handgun. The legislators are fine with this blood on their hands. The governor, too. One man accosted another and when it became a fist fight, one man — and one man only — had a firearm. The rest is racial rationalization and dishonorable commentary.

If I were a person of color in Florida, I would pick up a brick and start walking toward that courthouse in Sanford. Those that do not, those that hold the pain and betrayal inside and somehow manage to resist violence — these citizens are testament to a stoic tolerance that is more than the rest of us deserve. I confess, their patience and patriotism is well beyond my own.

I can’t look an African-American parent in the eye for thinking about what they must tell their sons about what can happen to them on the streets of their country.
